Cash, Johnny - Tennessee Lyrics

Momma I guess you heard
I got married Tennessee
I got a blue eyed girl
Who thinks the world of me

We got a cabin in the country
And a creek that rolls near by
And a dog won't even bark at a firefly

Our clothes lines hang just outside our back door
And theres a tire that swings in the air 10 feet or more
Theres a church I can't seem to find on Sunday morning
But I sure found the place I belong in

[Chorus:]
And we wear blue jeans and big green things
Spend the summer time naturally high
By, chopping wood for next winters fire
Saving our money for the county fair
George Jones is supposed to be there
We got, forty acres of corn on the ground
Tennessee taters we sell by the pound
Proud as we can be, to live in Tennessee

Momma you and Dad gotta come stay with us sometime
I know you'll love that sweet little gal of mine
You and her could take about babies
Make some homemade apple pie
While me and Dad take a walk maybe talk about old times

[Chorus]

Tennessee has been my home all my life. No rrason to want tovgo anywhere else unless ur a lame city boy. The countryside with plenty of rivers and lakes is for me. East tennessee has alot of stories of Jonny Cash roaming around thru here. Ive hear him and Roger Miller was in roan mountain state park and had been on a drunk binge for days when they sat down and wrote dang me by roger miller. Theres good reason why jon and june lived the rest of their lives in TN. June had alot of family around the area im from in east Tn. So ive heard about them my whole life

I'm from CA, living in the San Francisco bay area, but visited the South including Tennessee, and I loved Tennessee. This song really speaks to me! I feel more connected to stuff from the South and Tennessee now than my own state/region.

Andrew Penman people will tell you different but it is the best region in the world i fish next to johnny cashes House all the time and I absolutely love Tennessee I will never leave

I lived in sf Bay Area most of my adult life. On a whim I took a trip to Nashville and something flipped a switch. I returned to sf but kept returning to Tennessee. Knox and the Smoky mountains. Then one year I didn’t want to get back on that flight back to San Francisco. I moved to Tennessee and never looked back. I felt the same way you did. If you’re feeling that connection then move. Best decision I ever made even though it took a few long years to do it.

The SE is undoubtedly the best region in the world. I feel you. I grew up in NC and have been to the mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina a bunch. Favorite part of the entire world, and I've been some places. They arent massive like the Rockies, but they're small, quaint, relaxing. Absolutely love the southeast

Happy Birthday Johnny Cash ...This song began it's journey as a letter I had written to my Mother "Evelyn Marie Eide Scott" .. I was an eighteen year old boy
living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. At the time I was playing drums for ALABAMA at the now famous Bowery.
The letter sat on my counter in the apt. for a few weeks never delivered. One hot afternoon with my bare feet propped up on
the coffee table and my cheap six string acoustic I decided instead of mailing the letter that I would simply write it into a song.
I did this and placed the lyric sheet into my little bag that I kept for song ideas. After leaving Alabama two years later I was fortunate to land a publishing job in Hendersonville, Tennessee with "House Of Cash" John's Company... In 1980 while
writing for the company I received a telephone call one early morning from John Himself. He ask what I was doing that day and invited me to Cowboy Jacks Studio down on music row. I wasn't sure why but I was so excited to find out so, Off I drove to the studio. After walking up the flight of stairs which led to the "STUDIO" in the attic in Jack's house I was greeted with a
smiling John and all the band and Jack Clement. Long story short I spent an awesome beautiful day hanging around a few of music industry giants. John recorded two of my songs that day "Tennessee" and "When I'm Gray" I was blown away in the control room listening to the music and the vibe of a LEGEND actually singing my words. I did have a few moments of sadness because my mother had passed just a few months prior and had never heard the song or received the letter.

    "A NOTE TO SONGWRITERS"
The songs were recorded in 1980 and never saw the light of day until much, much later.
Fast forward to 2005 , Sony Records released the boxed set which contained "When I'm Gray" and "Tennessee" found it's
way to the top of the world charts in March 2014... on "Out Among The Stars" Johnny Cash ...
God certainly has a sense of humor...
I continue to write songs and will til my hands are twisted from pain and thoughts are to jumbled ....
    Rick

I am eternally grateful for this CD.  This is Johnny Cash at his peak; his voice never resonated better.  And it was recorded at about the time when I had the high privilege to see him and June in Vermont.  I hope more recordings from the early to mid-80s are released.

  16. K.... O....

I just today bought this CD. I LOVE it. Thank you for sharing it with everyone. The first record I bought by Johnny was "I Guess Things Happen That Way". It was on an E.P. with "Ways of a Woman in Love. I was hooked from that time on.

  20. S.... N....

Think this is my favorite one on the record. Unbelievable this ode to his home state didn't get discovered for so long. New TN state anthem?

    S.... N....

Sam Newhouse His home state is Arkansas.

  21. b.... ....

the last chorus is pure class .. love the kids backing an the riffs .. an ofcourse johnnys voice .. heaven for the ears!

    b.... ....

I know this comment is from 2 years ago, but Johnny Cash's voice looks at 2 years like it's nothing--it shall be eternal! I would really love it if Johnny Cash (maybe a 60s-70s Cash) could come back to life and narrate my life lol, but I don't think I'm quite that important.

    b.... ....

johnny cash's music will live forever. just like bob marleys.

  22. R.... M....

I hope they produce this album on analog
