Cash, Johnny - Sweet Betsy From Pike Lyrics

(Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei)

Oh, do you remember sweet Betsy from Pike
She crossed the big mountains with her lover Ike
With two yoke of oxen and a big yellow dog
And a tall Shanghai rooster and one spottled hog.

Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei
They soon reached the desert where Betsy gave out
And down in the sand she lay rolling about
While Ike in great tears looked on in surprise
Saying Betsy get up you'll get sand in your eyes.

Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei
Betsy got up in the great deal of pain
She said she'd go back to Pike County again
But I gave a sigh then he fondly embraced
And he traveled along with his arm round her waist.

(How can sweet Betsy went out to the dance
And Ike poor a fellow he's down at his pance)
Betsy was dressed up in ribbons and rings
Said Iken you're an angel but where are your wings.

Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei
Well, the miner said Betsy will you dance with me
She answere I will if you want make two free
I can't dance too hard do you want to know why
Because I'm so full of that strong out cooli.

Ike and sweet Betsy got married of course
But Ike was so jealous he gotta divorce
And Betsy well satidfied said with a shout
Goodbye forever I'm glad you've backed out.

Didli ai di ai didl didli ai di ai dei...

♫♪ Oh do you remember Darth Plaguies the Wise?
I thought not, you'd not hear it from the Jedis,

He used the dark forces, for creating life,
Perhaps the Sith powers could help save your wife.

He had so much power when using the force,
But he couldn't stay strong forever, of course.

His apprentice, with whom all his secrets were kept,
Betrayed Wise Darth Plaguies, killed him while he slept.

You can't learn this skill from a Jedi because,
The Jedi believe it's against nature's laws,

Darth Plagues's tale is of great irony,
He saved everyone but himself, tragically.♫♪

Awesome guy, awesome song! I play this on the guitar, so I sing my little sister to sleep with this song.

  19. s.... ....

My grandfather sang this to all the kids a long time ago to rock them to sleep in his arms. I thought it was a song he just made up but then stumbled upon this. My grandfather's lyrics were a little off though, lol:

Oh do you remember sweet Betsy from Pike
Who crossed a wild prairie with her husband Ike
With two yoke of oxen and one spotted dog
And an old Shanghai rooster she brought from back home.

I know that's wrong, but that's the why I'm gonna keep singing it! Oh the memories...

    s.... ....

Every so often my grandpa would sing this song as well; the way I always remembered it was the lyrics you have here, not in the song. So you're not the only one!

    s.... ....

As a folk song, the lyrics can't be wrong, just different. ;) I like your grand father's version.

Try these lyrics. The tune accompanies them wonderfully.

O lover eternal to whom we belong
Your name, it is holy. Your kingdom is come.
Your will both on earth and in heaven is done.
You meet with our needs satisfying each one.

The sin that we live in we pray you forgive
As we forgive others, so they too may live.
So send no temptation. Cause evil to end
O kingdom, and power and glory, Amen!

    D.... A....

I'm a Christian too, but I love this song just the way it is.

    D.... A....

I, too, love the song the way it is, and wouldn't change it for the world.
I've been doing different poetic settings of the Lord's Prayer for years, and setting them to accessible tunes. This tune is one of the best! Cash's rendition is a jewel.

  31. D.... W....

One of my favorite ballads...done to perfection by Johnny Cash.

  32. N.... ....

He cut out several lines from the original song.  (sad face)

  33. C.... ....

My Dad taught me this one on the harmonica.

    C.... ....

    What key is the harmonica?

    C.... ....

Mmm Hohner C, I believe. The Basic.

    C.... ....

@Crashman2 yes sir I just turned 20 sadly live in the city but the country is in my heart and family background so I do my history but anyways for my birthday I got a Hohner Marine Band no. 1896 key of C and I just loved it dont know how to play a tune but suprisingly I learned this in one day and I just love this Johnny Cash version of the old pioneer song

    C.... ....

ALL Cowboys/Pioneers carried pocket Hohners for their EZ-to play/ sweet music. He taught me ALL the lyrics, too. Have to explain to NewHumans the EXTREME Pioneer importance of a Tall Shanghai Rooster (alarm clock) & a BIG yaller Dawg. Hens can always be found later to turn kitchen-slops into eggs, Dawg is your night Alarm-system. City-Betsy give out when low on water, endless dry prairie/ eye-burning Sun ahead. Now for those Night-COLD, pack-yer food, Pick-yer-Pass Mountains.

    C.... ....

Git me a squeezebox-man, a busthead-whiskey jug, a washboard & borrowed-fm-Betsy thimbles, a broomstick/ string washtub Bass, & we gotta BAND- that MIGHT attract a REAL Fiddler! I still have a bass-2- teeny soprano collection of Jaw-harps. Often invited to sit in... w/ REAL Fiddlers & Blues-Harpists who have MANY-Key well broken-in Hohner Harps.

  34. D.... ....

I had this song on some old Disney cassette tape. It was like my favorite song ever when I was younger.

    D.... ....

    Yeah, that's the one.

    D.... ....

Thanks! Did it come with a book? I remember having a Disney tape similar to the one you had... mine had a book. For a while, I could find those tapes at the Half Price Books stores until tapes were replaced by CDs entirely.

    D.... ....

I don't remember a book, but it may have gone the way of the other tapes. There were a couple of tapes in the set, but I was notoriously hard on tapes at the time

  38. H.... S....

Love to hear Johnny Cash doing this old classic. Odd that he would sing it in the key of G, but play the harmonica in the key of F. But it sounds okay.

  39. T.... ....

    I f-ucking LOVE Johnny Cash.

I just cannot put it any simpler than that.

  40. s.... ....

I like the verse where she gets pissed and moons the whole wagon train.
Out on the prairie one bright, starry night,
They broke out the whiskey, and Betsy got tight.
She sang and she shouted and danced o'er the plain,
And she showed her bare arse to the whole wagon train.

  41. S.... M....

u'll get sand in ur eyes! lol
