Cash, Johnny - Rowboat Lyrics

Rowboat, row me to the shore.
She don't wanna be my friend no more.
She dug a hole in the bottom of my soul.
She don't wanna be my friend no more.

Pick me up, gimme some food to eat,
In your truck goin' no place.
I'll be home talkin' to nobody.
You'll be strange, you'll be far away.

Big fat moon.
And my body's out of tune.
With the burnin' waves,
She's a billion years away.

Dog food on the floor,
And I've been like this before.
She is all,
And everything else is small.

Pick me up, gimme some alcohol,
In your truck playin' the radio.
I'll be home with the gasoline.
You'll be stoned, you'll be far away.

[Instrumental break]

Rowboat, row me to the shore.
She don't wanna be my friend no more.
She dug a hole in the bottom of my soul.
She is all, and everything else is small.

When Johnny Cash does your song its no longer your song, but you live on knowing that the man just made you part of a legend

  10. J.... M....

    John Cash.

  11. W.... F....

I love Johnny Cash but Beck’s original version sounds better because it’s stripped down and sounds raw.

    W.... F....

I agree. Both are great though

  12. J.... K....

I tried to listen to an ad on this but screwed it up once again like
I usually do. I got new shoes, that's for sure.
In that truck playin' that radio.
Just like this in LA, it's how we do it.
It's Buck Owens and Johnny Cash, it's the Bakersfield sound.
Bottles of gin broken on the supermarket floor.
Sometimes southern rockers bother comin' 'round my place
and sayin' so. Sure I'm Boston. Dogfood on the floor.
    Twelve gallons of gasoline. Yow!

  13. j.... p....

    i love it

  14. C.... C....

when he says big fat moon I get a big ol shiver

    C.... C....

    AGREED!👍

  15. C.... C....

this song is so good that it draws from a deep seated dread within me. Like the comeup of a challenging acid trip

  16. a.... s....

Sounds like from a dogs perspective

  17. K.... B....

you kno when a cover version dropkicks the life out of an original.....

  18. Y.... S....

    God bless Cash and Petty

  19. D.... J....

Yeah don't bother trying to figure out which version is better, just listen to both versions over and over again with a smile.

  20. T.... ....

Oh! I love the contrast that the C chord, accompanied by Cash's voice matching the note, brings to the first track of this album. Reminiscent (for me) of a few songs by Jerry Garcia / Robert Hunter / The Grateful Dead. Songs like Get Out My Life Woman, Stella Blue, and Simple Twist of Fate come to mind.

An unusual pairing of chords. Catches your ear and makes your brain go 'huh. That doesn't quite belong there... But it works!'

  21. S.... R....

Johnny Cash you will forever live in our souls through your brilliant music and voice.

  22. M.... y....

Fuck Tom Petty (but RIP), Cash should have collaborated with Beck.

  23. A.... S....

    Pretty much the perfect song.

  24. l.... ....

Can't even imagine what a thrill it had to be for Beck when Johnny Cash decided to cover one of his perfect, gorgeous songs.
Gotta love BOTH Johnny Cash & Beck!

    l.... ....

There is an interview where the interviewer shows Beck a video of Cash saying how much he liked rowboat, Beck actually starts crying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5mJTuR04c

    l.... ....

Yeah I can confirm, I remember when this came out. Beck cried.

  25. J.... M....

    johnny plays this well

  26. L.... H....

    Amazing

  27. m.... ....

It should have been pretty amazing for Beck... He just did 3 albums (whose only Mellow Gold got him fame) and was messing around with Stereopathetic Soul Manure and BOOM Johny Cash make a cover of one of the song of that album.
    Must feel weird and great...

    m.... ....

    @Thomas Moon
Well, I disagree, I prefer Beck version.

    m.... ....

    magicalxan You're dumb.

    m.... ....

To be dumb doesn't include I have bad musical taste... I know lots of dumb people that listen to cool stuff...
And after all, go fuck yourself you moron!

    m.... ....

I agree with you, just because the lemming above keeps parroting "Once Johnny Cash covered it , it became Johnny's song" just doesn't make it so...and yes, that punk little boy CAN go fuck himself...
