Cash, Johnny - Remember The Alamo Lyrics
And a hundred and eighty were challenged by Travis to die
By the line that he drew with his sword when the battle was nigh
Any man that would fight to the death crossed over
But him that would live, better fly
And over the line went a hundred and seventy nine
Hey Santa Anna, we're killing your soldiers below!
That men, wherever they go will remember the Alamo
Bowie lay dying, but his powder was ready and dry
Flat on his back, Bowie killed him a few in reply
And young David Crockett was singing and laughing
With gallantry fears in his eyes
For God and for freedom, a man more than willing to die
Hey Santa Anna, we're killing your soldiers below!
And then they sent a young scout from the battlements, bloody and loud
With the words of farewell from a garrison valiant and proud
"Grieve not little darling, my dying, if Texas is sovereign and free
We'll never surrender and ever with liberty be"
Hey Santa Anna, we're killing your soldiers below!
That men, wherever they go will remember the Alamo

Remember the Alamo. To victory or death.
Johnny should have done his own Alamo movie I would watch it a lot like if you agree
Bowie shot someone while he was freaking dying Texas history is interesting
I always listen to this when I visit the sacred Alamo
This woman wrote this. Jane Bowers . Everyone who has covered this from Johnny Cash, Phil Oches and Bob Dylan has given short shrive to the writer.
What is an alamo? Sorry I am not a native english speaker
The Alamo (from what I remeber) is a church in Texas, and was used in the battle of the Alamo, which is what this song is about, the battle of the Alamo
The battle of the Alamo is when Mexico took rights out of Texans and then we fought against Mexico For independence and it was 200 men faces over 1000 Mexican troops and everyone in the Alamo solders were killed
@DarkAce Yt the truth brother.
@DarkAce Yt mainly, the "right" Mexico "took from Texans" (which was a part of Mexico and therefore, Texans were subject to Mexican Law), it was the RIGHT TO OWN SLAVES. That is what REALLY AND ACTUALLY infuriated the Texans. Mexican Constitution abolished slavery, and the Texans wanted to keep their slaves. If you study both sides of history (Mexican and US), you will realize that most of the Texan "heroes" (Austin, Houston, etc.) they were SLAVE OWNERS. I invite you to analyze BOTH SIDES OF HISTORY. That is why the US has one of the lowest cultural knowledge levels about world history, they do not go further from what they see in Elementary School or the History Channel.
Luis Gaxiola 😴😑 thanks for the correction But yes I know that almost every hero such as Bowie and Travis Had slaves
I miss the America that was proud of herself...tearing down monuments of brave men...God save us
God has abandoned us
Don't forget Kentucky's finest son Jim Bowie also laid down his life at the Alamo.
Kevin flynn and shot someone on his death bed
Many streets all over Texas named Bowie with pride!
You mean that "brave" guy that persuaded other people to fight to defend slavery and was later found OUTSIDE THE ALAMO by the Mexican troops and executed "in situ"? I am really astonished how W.A.S.P. are so gullible and naive. Please, there is more literature than the biased one you saw in Elementary School.
@Luis Gaxiola yep he was a coward even the Mexicans got mad because he did not act with valor
When you fight the Yakuza with Bill Paxton
These were brave men from several nations.William Harper
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, "brave" someone who foughts for slavery? Really?
also Mexico can barely call the Alamo a "victory" since 180 men took out 1800 and Mexico had their assess handed to them
The smallest flea can drive a big dog crazy
I don't want to be rude but it was 5 to 10000 Mexicans
Texas does have "real" mountains not snowcapped though they are actually higher than the Appalachians mainly because the Rocky mountains are one big chain not just here in America starting in central Alaska this chain goes all the way to central America then dies out then there are the Andes but the Appalachians do have "real" mountains too but made up of many chains.Texas actually has tropical islands (as defined by the US ecological service) eastern deciduous forest southwestern high plains mountains and basins a good chunk of the great plains tropical rainforest coastal pine forest and and when all of that (excluding the tropical islands) comes together boom hill country.
This is a great song that I have loved since I was a child in the early 1970s. I wish Davy Crockett had survived the Alamo, because he would have worked with Sam Houston to ensure that the native tribes of Texas were treated fairly. He was among the few who voted against Jack-ass Jackson's odious Indian Removal Act; and, together with Houston, he might have swayed more Texicans to oppose the hostility and vitriol preached and practiced by that mean sonofabitch President Lamar and others like him. I hope one day Texas lives up to the legacy of the Alamo. Hoka hey!
Ayukii my friend. I am partial Native as well and wish the same thing.
Great old song. Always loved it.
just don't forget your history people, fight for our freedom, who ever it may be your fighting
+fuckyoutube The Anglo Texans committed a genocide against the nomadic coastal Karankawa, initially because Austin's unfairly vaunted old 300 refused to share the tribe's traditional territory with the tribe. The Alamo defenders did not fight for the Karankawa. the tribes President Lamar later attacked and drove out of the state or for the numerous slaves held in Texas.Remember the Alamo, hell yes! This song has been a favorite of mine for decades, but temper it with a realistic knowledge of Texas history. Sam Houston, the Raven, had a very different approach to Texas' native tribes; and he was forced to resign as the state's governor when he staunchly opposed the lethal nonsense that was the Confederacy..
But it will protect and save many lives.
But at least it will impair them to hijack planes and shit!
@Kaninma the Spaniards killed off the karankawa
You know what i think? :D
There shouldent BE any more battles.
T_T
Think about it very deep, where would the world stand if no war was ever? Maybe worse we will never know
Comments on three year old comment.
Which is now four years old.
Honestly even four years later my sentence holds a simplistic profundity.
I love Johnny Cash and own nearly one of his albums on vinyl and cd. That disclaimer being said, this version is pretty weak when compared to the one recorded by The Kingston Trio. .
Kingston trio were great as folk singers, but this is a balad and no one has done Alamo better...
Now there is a Texan I can like, one with a sense of humor. Being a truck driver I just might do that, next time I am down that way.
Oh I wouldn't think folks liked me if they didn't tease me at least some. We live in Mission, right on the Rio Grande. Mexico is about 7 or 8 miles down the road and across the river from our house. Y'all come see us!! We'd love to have ya!!
Thanks. I have been from Stratford, to Brownsville, Taken many trips to Galveston, and Corpus, and driven from Anthony to Orange TX. I have seen much of the Hill Country by way of back roads and traveled just about every mile of interstate. I just have to jerk the chains of those who fail to admit that there is someplace besides TX. I also tease those who live east of the Mississippi about their so called mountains.
Even though Texas doesn't have any snowcapped mountains, the Davis Mountains in southwest Texas are pretty high. Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas, is about 8500 free above sea level. The McDonald Observatory, not far from Alpine, Texas, is the third largest in the world. It is an interesting place to visit. Y'all come see us and we'll take you down to gulf where you can swim or go deep sea fishing.
Sorry but while there is some beautiful hill country, Texas doesn't have any real mountains.. Otherwise Texans wouldn't have to go up to Colorado to go skiing.
Seems like whenever I think I've seen every Johnny Cash picture in existence, another surfaces
"Beautiful, beautiful Texas, where the beautiful bluebonnets grow. We're proud of our forefathers who fought at the Alamo. You can live on the plains or the mountains, or down where the sea breezes blow. You're still in beautiful Texas, the most beautiful place that I know." This song was written by former governor, W. Lee O'Daniel, himself a transplanted Texan from Ohio.
@navtel Couldn't agree more!
that is the way battles should be fought now.. simple weapons
@faxinadu Yes indeed!
hell ya awesome!
