Cash, Johnny - Luther Played The Boogie Lyrics

We were just a plain ol' hillbilly band with a plain ol' country style
We never played the kind of songs that'd drive anybody wild
Played a railroad song with a stomping beat
We played a blues song, kinda slow and sweet
But the thing that knocked them off of their feet was, ooh-wee
When Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie woogie
Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie woogie
Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie woogie
Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie in the strangest kind of way
Play it strange!

Well, we did our best to entertain everywhere we'd go
We'd nearly wear our fingers off to give the folks a show
Played jumping jive to make 'em get in the groove
We played sad songs, real slow and smooth
But the only thing that'd make 'em move was, ooh-wee
When Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie woogie
Luther played the boogie woogie, Luther played the boogie woogie
Luther played the boogie

Now, did Luther play the boogie strange?

  1. p.... l....

very cool and VERY old. im class of 1973 .and its older than me.

  2. t.... ....

Luther Monroe Perkins.... Whose guitar playing Marty Stuart once called Johnny Cash's "secret weapon." Johnny Cash hit it on the nail when he once told Ralph Emery that "It didn't take us long to realize that Luther was something really special."

  3. c.... ....

Hard to believe Luther's dead 50 years today (5th August).

  8. C.... S....

Those early early shows with Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and JC all on the same bill must have some stories that go with them. All legends.

  9. W.... S....

That last line always caught me off guard as a kid. It still does 17 years later.

Now didn't Luther play the boogie strange ?

  14. H.... D....

Did Luther Perkins have social issues or was that just the way he was? Oh well, either way he's probably one the greatest guitar pickets to ever pick at a guitar.

    H.... D....

GhostFire 689 yeah i know there jokes were weird and fucked up to us like they would cut huge holes into hotel rooms and they would take the legs off chairs and place them back so when the maid cleaned it would just fall to pieces

    H.... D....

Working many years ago in Nashville, I was blessed to know and talk with Luther's wife (Margie) as well as the late Marshall Grant many times. I often asked about Luther's famous "stone face" countenance on stage and they both said it was something that carried over from the early days when Luther was usually unsure about his playing abilities. That famous "Luther look" just took on a life of its own as the years progressed, even as his playing abilities improved by the end of his life and fans just ate it up. Today, fifty-one years after his death, Luther's unique persona has become the stuff of legend. But the fact is that Luther truly loved being around people and people loved being around him. During Cash's worst days doing live show (especially the mass of shows he missed in the '60s but the TN3 would honor by playing instrumentals of Cash's biggest hits) huge crowds of fans would always gather around Luther either during intermissions or afterwards just to stop and chat with him - I know because I saw him perform "live" with the Cash Show more than a dozen times between 1963-68. Plus a lot of us older Cash fans who can still recall seeing Luther on stage or on TV were often amused (even entertained) by his famous deadpan look. In the end it didn't hurt ole Luther any since he and the late, great Don Rich (his constant grin was the exact opposite of Luther on stage) were arguably the two most visible, famous, and now legendary sidemen in country music...and today both men still inspire countless of pickers all these years later, which is one hell of a legacy! Pickers still TRY to emulate their sound and pick out their famous solos note for note, which pretty much says it ALL in my book. Unlike today, all it took was 2-3 notes at the start of any Cash or Owens record and you knew EXACTLY who the guitarist was and what voice you'd be hearing next! Buck and Johnny both admitted many times during their lives that they were lucky to have two of the most unique musical stylists playing by their side. And to quote Marty Stuart, "a Johnny Cash record without Luther's guitar playing on it was only half of a Cash record." I can't agree more.
