Cash, Johnny - Give My Love To Rose Lyrics
I found him by the railroad track this morning
I could see that he was nearly dead
I knelt down beside him and I listened
Just to hear the words the dying fellow said
For ten long years I've paid for what I've done
I was trying to get back to Louisiana
To see my Rose and get to know my son
Give my love to Rose please won't you mister?
Take her all my money, tell her buy some pretty clothes
Tell my boy that daddy's so proud of him
And don't forget to give my love to Rose
Won't you tell them I said thanks for waiting for me
Tell my Rose to try to find another
'Cause it ain't right that she should live alone
Mister here's a bag with all my money
It won't last them long the way it goes
God bless you for finding me this morning
Now don't forget to give my love to Rose
Give my love to Rose please won't you mister?
Take her all my money, tell her buy some pretty clothes
Tell my boy that daddy's so proud of him
And don't forget to give my love to Rose

Cash, Johnny Give My Love To Rose Comments
The saddest part is that the dying man doesn’t tell him where they live exactly or how to get there. I wonder if he is trying to hold on to a fantasy that his wife did wait for him... knowing that the stranger couldn’t possibly find them based off of a “Rose” living in “Louisiana”. 😢
Amazing song, R.I.P. Mr. Cash
I’m 13 my dad sang this song to me when I was little,This song gets me every time😓
Then you are beyond your years. With a great big Heart for a song that's quite sad. Makes a grown man like myself to shed a tear. Always expand in listening to all types of music. I'm thankful my kids do. Good luck kid in life and enjoy music. It's great for the heart and Soul. Music can always turn a gloomy day into Sunshine. Makes me believe in the youth still connecting to a great song.Good for you. Parents or someone helped with that. That's wonderful... Bless you.
An address would be helpful
This is an old story about a cop finding a guy carrying a sack of money. This is his alibi (sob story) to the cop - "I'm just taking this poor fella's money to his widow." I love Johnny Cash, been a fan all my life, and I really like his earlier recording of this one.
You cheapskate lol
You know back in the 1930s, 40s and even 50s, people would do this for a complete stranger. I highly doubt someone would ever do something like what was mentioned in the song today. It is very sad.
This was a song he had been singing his whole career yet he perfected it the finale time it was recorded
To see my Rose & get to know my Son , you can't better the old ones
For some reason when he says I was tying to get to Louisiana i feel really sad D: great song
This song is so sad
No major prison in San Francisco. Must mean St. Qentain nearby.
I don't know why, but I'm crying
my grandfather use to sing and play this song for all us kids after we would beg and beg after awhile we started singing the chorus with him which tickled him after we started doing that we never had to beg again he would do the first cords and we would crowd around him
Dammit Johnny, I'm on a public bus, why are you making me bawl like this?
Johny we miss you so much
Johnny cash did it like no body eles
Yeah there are greats like Elvis
But no one touch your soul like cash No1
With his songs ....
They speak to you everyone of us
I might not have know him face to face
But way he sings I feel like his a man I knew all my life ..... Why course some part of his song related to me ( us even )
Rip the man in black ❤️
I am here becuse of my dad
Rumor has it Cash misunderstood the man when he said "give my love to Rose." Apparently he gave her a whole lotta lovin.
Haha! I bet he'd have laughed at that :)
It is touching the deepest spot of the heart of the society
I love his subtle little homage to walk the line with the guitar

I'm so lonely and depressed...?
Everydays exactly the same for me. I feel like i have no hope, no worthwhile goals, no purpose. I attend a community college even though i have no idea what i want to do in life. i spend most of my time by my self on my computer...or working out. I have dreamed everyday of what it would be like to have a significant other. Someone i could care about , spend time with and talk to.i feel like it would be the only thing that could bring happiness to my life.. I know i am good looking because i get complimented a lot by people i consider acquaintances, more then friends. But i know i will never find someone like that because i am shy by nature and am incapable of flirting and on top of that besides for the few girls in class there is no other place to meet girls. Also i don't see any change in my life in sight.... i'm so miserable all the time I am so very sad lonely and depressed and very suicidal I am just a girlfriend or a wife
I am so sad and lonely and very depressed and I am very suicidal
@Al Bundy i dont want to hear that friend God is still writing your love story. I suggested you to read new testament just try go buy one if you dont have at home. You can read it also on internet. It will guide you,you will see the world with different eyes. You can email me later on we can discuss later about it.
Keep strong fella. Too much time at the computer is bad for the soul! Remember you are a good person and good things will happen if you want them....providence.
You have to love yourself before can love someone else. Look into Alan Watts and meditation. It has changed my life when I was at my lowest! Good luck brother!
I was the same way in my 20’s, I didn’t have confidence or conquer my shyness until I was in my 40’s, that’s not old, it only seems like it is now.
Tears tears tears 😐😐😐😐
This song... makes the tears well up... every time. Simple Masterpiece....
this song is so deep.
First time i've shed a tear in a while.
i love you.
Johnny Cash was one of a kind. There will never be another. There will be pretenders and wanna be;s but that's all they will ever be.
I’m not crying you’re crying shut the fuck up

My dad ( Bob Orr.) Sang this song when I was a kid. Love to hear him sing
The last song my dad song my dad sang to me by request the night before he died unexpectedly. He loved Johnny. Rip dad.
Wonderful
Corey taylor just sang this song on livestream so now im here.
i think this was based on a real life person John met in prison once
Speechless..
This song is sheer poetry; along with 'I Still Miss Someone', 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town' and others they show what a masterly songwriter John was.
This song is my favorite song to play on the guitar. It's actually the first song I've ever learned
It's a very sad song
Johnny's best tear jerker

The song that shaped my heart
My middle is Rose and my dad said that he's going to tell anyone who's there beside him to "Give My Love To Rose". This song is so important to me, Thank You for posting this.
Only song that has ever, ever made me cry
Ed D
A song that made me cry was "The Rose" My Bett Midler, because my aunt sang it at a karaoke once, she died about a year ago, the song just reminds me of her.
Cry,cry, cry. Yes this Song will shed a tear...
Reminds me of my dad.... always tried to do what was best for me in his heart, but will power couldn't change the mistakes he made. Beautiful song.
im normally just a pure hip hop guy, but after hearing "Hurt" and "The Man Comes Around", i fell in love with this. Thank you Johnny, you will always live on. R.I.P.
the song hurt was originally by nine inch nails Johnny Cash remade that song right before even died if you ask me he did it better but you can be the judge of that
i know its a cover. The NIN version is good but he did do it a lot better
chelsea6671 I also love rap/hip hop mostly because of the stories told in the music, but I’ve always loves Johnny because he can tell a story like no other in any genre
Me too same 3 songs.
Only song my dad taught me before he died [I was 13, now 59] & I havent played it since.
I want to hug you
All y'all why you arguin on a comment like this first off who cares if your black or not and what does it matter
@daisy0948 hinson I hate it when morons spoil a good comment chain.
😢 God bless you
What a wonderful singer/songwriter Johnny Cash was, will always be an absolute legend R.I.P Johnny. When it comes to sad songs three quickly come to mind all sung by legends, Johnny Cash "Give My Love To Rose" George Jones "She Stopped Loving Him Today" and Merle Haggard "Sing Me Back Home". Johnny Cash though was the master of country music. there are some good modern country music singers today but none are good enough to stand in Johnny Cash's shoes, he is so missed, as is George Jones R.I.P who sang "Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes"
He is the master of all music.
Listening to the lyrics, it seems the boy was too young when his father went off to prison and his wife most likely found someone new while he was away. Maybe dying he was happier thinking they had waited and still remembered him, rather than have moved on. He doesn't want his wife to live alone as he dies in the arms of a strangers, who doesn't even know his name.
DragoonXV
I think that is the point of the song. The ex-convict is delusional when he dies.
Wow I’ve never thought of it that way
Such a beautiful song. I can't help but cry a little every time I cover it onstage
This Track always gets me! Impact of a legend! what a great artist!
A few years from now this will be a classic.
It already is.
I think the reason john re recorded this song is because he knew the end was near, and wanted to leave a goodbye to all his family, friends, and fans.
How old was he in this recording he dont Sind too old in this
+Dalton Motley Johnny first recorded this in 1957. This version is his second studio version, and was recorded when he was 69 or 70. This was his last album (released during his lifetime, another has been released posthumously) and to Joshua Brooks' point it was his good bye to his fans. He knew he wasn't well and he communicated it through his delivery and arrangements.
Gets me in the gut every time. Great emotive musician, great song. God bless Johnny Cash.
Yeah....
Well said Wullie. Well said.
wow this version is cool. I love this !!!!!!!!!
Nothing like you Johnny!! You were bigger than life!!! miss you but so glad we have your music and your memorie
one of my favorite Cashsong
The list of Franciscan saints seems to have quite a few men and women who accomplished nothing very extraordinary. Rose is one of them. She did not influence popes and kings, did not multiply bread for the hungry and never established the religious order of her dreams. But she made a place in her life for God’s grace, and like St. Francis before her, saw death as the gateway to new life.
Quote:
Rose's dying words to her parents were: "I die with joy, for I desire to be united to my God. Live so as not to fear death. For those who live well in the world, death is not frightening, but sweet and precious."

This meme aged like fine wine
Is this the anthem of the world?? Sometimes I just feel sadness living in this world. Thinking of what people can do to other people or torture animals and that stuff. I sometimes want to cry but when you listen to this song you have a feeling that there may be a better life after this life on Earth.
+grimlund Agreed !
I think this is Johnny,s best song
........
I love Johnny cash!!!!
this song god never fails to make me cry...Happy birthday #johnnycash
Johnny Cash is very possibly one of the greatest musicians ever to live every song he sings people can connect to it and feel the emotions and the storys
This song always gets to me. Especially the "Tell my boy that daddy's so proud of him" and "Cause it ain't right that she should live alone" T_T
Song makes me cry, but it makes me know how much the person in the song must've loved his family...
Johnny cash has always amazed me like that...And this will always be one of my favorite songs in the entire world.
Thank you for uploading this, it brings up memories...
for all gaylords and fucking pussys
One of the most sadly songs I've ever heard
SPIRIT OF HOLY FIRE FUCK US FOR FREEDOM!!!! EXIT THE DRAGON< HELL OM MANI PADME HUM< MY MERIT IS COMPLETE
Hype comment
I hardly believe that Johnny Cash of all people, who preformed for FREE in prisons, and even did a song in Folsom prison by one of the inmates, and he gave him credit, when he could have just taken it, and acted like he wrote it. but he didn't. because he knew what prison was like, and how long Glen Shirley waited.
lmao thanks I needed a good joke today
for me.... He is The Voice!
sweet song
To be fair, his uncle could be a terrible liar and he could be (and is) an idiot.
That's the way I see it anyway...
When he was younger & a bit of a juvenile delinquent he dropped somebody, maybe in a liquor store hold up who knows but he's always regretted it even though he was never caught...That would explain 90% of his lyrics wouldn't it?
Or do you think his lyrics are just to make money?
Yes it is, Thank You...
But Johnny cash's whole persona is that he is a remorseful criminal who regret's his past...Like most people who've done time
It's not only what he often sings about, it's who he is
youtube: donald marshall NWO
your uncle died poor because he was talent-less.
People don't get it...
It's not that Johnny Cash spent one night in jail, it's that he SHOULD have spent many years there.
He never got caught.
My favorite Cash song,Just can't decide which version I like most This one or the original from many many years ago on SUN RECORDS
THanks
Made me miss my ma rose :(
