Cash, Johnny - Devil To Pay Lyrics

Go on girl take your chances
See how long you can go on from man to man
I can read the lines between your stolen glances
And I know it's time to fold this loosing hand
Cause you're drawn to the flame by the thrill and the shame
Of the cheatin' game they taught you how to play
You've got nothing to lose but your soul girl
And you've only the devil to pay

You've been flying so high you don't know
That you're blind to the writin' on the wall
But some day you'll look down
And you'll find you've got no place to fall
When the bright lights're gone you'll be standing alone
Forsaken in the naked light of day
Then you'll know that it's all over but the dying
And you've still got the devil to pay

Join your friends while you got 'em
Cause you know they're gettin' fewer every day
You can't wait to let them take you to the bottom
And I'm gettin' tired of standin' in your way
But when you hit the ground don't come looking around
For the pieces of the love you threw away
That's the price of the high life you're livin'
And you still got the devil to pay

You've been flying so high you don't know
That you're blind to the writin' on the wall
But some day you'll look down
And you'll find you've got no place to fall
When the bright lights're gone you'll be standing alone
Forsaken in the naked light of day
Then you'll know that it's all over but the dying
And you've still got the devil to pay

  2. G.... S....

this is what a lot of girls do!

  3. D.... S....

Pretty sure that's Rodger Miller backing him up on this song.

  4. n.... t....

What hell is this ? the intro guitar riff seems heavily influenced by mid 1960's english/scotish inspired American folk music. I feel like I can almost put my finger on where this song took its intro from but I cant quite place it? Peter, Paul and Mary's cover of don't think twice? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu-DWUngjhk

  5. F.... G....

Recorded during the filming of his 1969 documentary “Johnny Cash: The Man His World His Music”

  6. F.... G....

    One of his best covers!

  7. C.... B....

This was when C&W was at its best!!

  8. R.... B....

This is a sadder song than most people understand, he's telling her she's going to Hell.

    Hello THIS IS JOHNNY CASH...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. k.... b....

Being a Johnny Cash fan, I naturally sent the name of this song to my ex after she was giving me trouble after we broke up. The lyrics were perfect for it. I think she must have got the message.

  13. P.... B....

I dedicate this to the hookers my ex husband hooked up with.Cheers ladies!

Dont blame the hookers. Oldest trade in the world...

  14. f.... ....

it sounds effortless. what a talent.

  15. P.... ....

Singing it, as it is. Rare trait these days!

  16. B.... ....

is johnny Cash dead or alive?

    B.... ....

    Rumen Angelov legends never die

    B.... ....

Sadly he's dead. Sept 12, 2003, same day as John Ritter died. Johnny Cash's passing was expected to some degree, John Ritter's passing was a shock to all who admired them. His death overshadowed the death of Johnny Cash.

    B.... ....

Sadly, that's how most people become legends is in their death. I doubt anyone could make more of Johnny Cash than he actually was, because he was so phenomenal people didn't have to build him up. He was what he was and it was all he needed to be from an earthly musical perspective.

    B.... ....

BIIGFOOT Sadly, he left this earth in 2003. He’d be 87 next February.

  17. S.... I....

Johnny Cash And Kris Kristofferson !!!!!!!!! ... and Anita Carter ....

  25. T.... ....

Yeah, this was back when Johnny was really in his prime; but he was always great (and became greater). I wrote and perform (as a tribute artist) that you can find by searching YouTube: Johnny Cash Me and My Heart. J Cash Lives!

  26. r.... ....

Mario, you're thinking about the Kristoffersen song 'To Beat The Devil'.

    r.... ....

    kristofferson wrote this song

    r.... ....

    Yes, Mike is right, Mario.
The original credits on the 1969 records state that it was written by "M. Travis - L. Rusk", but I always suspected it to be a Kris Kristofferson song which is confirmed by a commercially unreleased demo I got bout ten years ago. On Cash's "The Complete Columbia Album Collection" from 2012, the song IS finally credited to Kris.

  27. C.... M....

no manches que chingoneria de rola

  28. E.... E....

kinda ironic though, he had a thing With June Carter and even tried to kiss her while married to Vivian Loberto even though vivian was a great bitch

  29. M.... S....

Without taking anything away from the great Johnny Cash, let's give credit to the one who actually wrote these amazing lyrics: his fellow Highwayman, Kris Kristofferson, one of Johnny's best friends and collaborators. Look this up in the Song Writer's Hall of Fame.

    M.... S....

Mario Serano not true mate. you're confusing this with another song

    M.... S....

no, you r thinking of to beat the devil

  30. M.... S....

  33. A.... T....

    Men cheat plenty themselves.

    A.... T....

Ashley Tbone you know, this isn't the place for that.

    A.... T....

This is a song about women. Just like women play their cheating sonofabitch songs. Men women Blablabla. Just don’t be a cheating prick. Problem solved.

  37. T.... ....

I just love the lyrics of this song.

  38. F.... R....

    @ARATROK
It was an expression, I never done it because I don't hate, she made a bad move..Johnny Cash is what gave me strength to get over it..This is a song that did the trick..I actually don't wish her to hell. It is like "Fuck I hate Nirvana". than next you know it, you like their music..But thanks of your concern. Whats up with the wall picture ?

  39. h.... ....

I tried tracking down this album but i found was sub standard boot legs from the same name on cd so i Bought it on cassette finally the right version, I love this album so much.

  40. s.... ....

This song is dedicated to all the bitches who cheated on men and have been unfaithful to us men after we have loved these cheating women with all our hearts.

  41. s.... ....

@FAproduction1 I'm sorry about your breakup man.

  42. 8.... ....

I do not like much American music... but I love Johnny Cash!!! All songs are great!!!

  43. 6.... ....

@snakeiiizzz6 Actually both albums have been reissued, but they're kinda rare. The "I Walk The Line" album from 1964 is included on the Bear Family boxed set "The Man In Black - 1962 - 1969", as is "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". The "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" album was reissued again last year on the Readers Digest set "Johnny Cash - The Great Seventies Recordings". It includes the albums "The Johnny Cash Show", "Man In Black", "A Thing Called Love", "Any Old Wind That Blows",and "One Piece At A Time".

  44. F.... R....

Can't wait to send this song to my ex-girlfriend..and on the tittle or at the bottom I'll put "Fuck you bitch, Now you got the devil to pay'..
