It costs more and takes more than 10 times as long to go by train as to fly from LA to NY.
Freight trains have priority on all tracks over passenger trains and they run the freight trains an average of 50 mph. When the freight is coming, the passenger train gets put on a siding to wait.

To make passenger trains practical in USA would require triple the main line tracks we have now just for the long hauls. Nobody wants to pay for the land it would take to do that.
