Casablancas, Julian - Long Island Blues Lyrics

I see a drug bust in your eyes.
There are bruises on your thighs.
I can see you're trying to hide
All the darkness in your mind.
You got sawdust on your toes
From that sports bar down the road.
You have beer glass in your feet.
You say kiss me on the cheek.

Some people get paid to talk
Some people get paid to listen
Some people buy a ticket
And can't wait for intermission.
Just like some might love you blindly
Some might love you with conditions
Some will love you like an unloved child
Loves family traditions.

Now she's tainted by the syringe
Try to rhyme a word with orange
I'm a cheap and ugly sinner
To whose soul love is so foreign.

So if you're sideways
And if you wanna go my way
Before a meteor shower
Decides that you should be devoured
Whether you're locked up in the tower
Or if you charge them by the hour
In mama's eyes you were a flower
Forget the aftertaste of life gone sour.

Will you finish what you started?
Travel the seas you never parted
Remember things you disregarded
Communicate with the departed
Believe in things you thought weren't founded
Prepare to always be astounded
Or keep your dreams and visions grounded
It took a while but then I found it.

No one inspired you in time
So you left your love behind
In a world that discourage
One who's young and full of courage.
You said you'd start at the bottom
But instead you start at the top
Be careful what you wish for
On your lap it just might drop.

It's a lonely life at the bottom
It can be lonely too at the top
Make sure your heart is singing
Right until the day it stops.
They all say dream
But what they mean is be specific or obscene
It's time to find some time to fail at makes you most happy.

Sometimes you concentrate on lovers
To forget everything else
Sometimes you hate each other to forget you hate yourself.

So if you're sideways
And if you wanna go my way
Before a meteor shower
Decides that you should be devoured
Whether you're locked up in the tower
Or if you charge them by the hour
Tell me you'll always be a flower
Forget the aftertaste of life got sour.

Will you finish what you started?
Before you celebrate with a cigarette
Remember things you disregarded
Communicate with the departed
Prepare to always be astounded
Believe in things you thought weren't founded
Don't keep those dreams and visions grounded
It took a while but now I found it.

    M.... H....

its been 27 years of life for me dude, I agree too.

  47. V.... M....

Lou Reed yeah but it has Bob Dylan melodies fo sho

    V.... M....

I actually immediately thought it was some bob dylan cover uppon first hearing it!

  48. A.... R....

I think he got a bit of the rythm from Buddy Hollys Rave On and added some sort of Lou Reed feel to it. All that with his unforgettable voice, just brilliant

    A.... R....

@Angel Rebollo I thought the exact same thing, def took it from Rave On and slowed it down.

  49. m.... ....

Sounds like he got the melody from that this land is your land this land is our land from the blah blah blah to the New York islands

  50. M.... H....

I can relate to this song a lot its crazy(good, I think)

  51. l.... A....

love this song because ot says real things about life

    l.... A....

yeah somehow it seems to cover everything, and by the time it's finished you're already done dusting off your knees, looking straight ahead again, ready to embark on your next big act of foolishness ha ha

  52. L.... ....

More Lou reed and folky than I would ever prefer.

  53. V.... M....

this land is my land this land is your land.. haha

  56. A.... H....

Deam!! What could I do to make everyone I know listen to this song?

  57. O.... ....

@Teresa S the statement he is making is that an unloved child does not love family traditions. so Teresa S, you're actually saying that you hate this song

  58. O.... ....

    Thank God for Julian Casablancas.

  59. A.... Z....

standing ovation and my hat off to this song

  60. c.... ....

you should know it, you wrote it man.

  61. k.... ....

This song just found me something that rhymes with orange.

  62. M.... ....

Just recently he revealed he was going to do another solo album. I expect it will be after the follow up to angles. I personally think his solo album was genius. I am a huge Strokes fan but I can appreciate what he did in the solo album. I love it just as much as The Strokes!

  63. J.... C....

His lyrics are so true. I mean, how can "You hate others to forget you hate yourself." How more true can it get?

  64. N.... H....

Proud to Live on Long Island.

  65. B.... M....

maybe he'll make anoter albums, but i think it will be when TS is finally
    gone...

    B.... M....

    Yeah, they've gone

  66. B.... M....

You know im not a fan of Julian, I just respect him so much because his work is .. i dont know, whatever u like to say... his work deserve respect. I feel like he is my friend since 7 years ago.

  67. 6.... ....

Thumbs up for Julian being so awesome as to be only person in history to get that close to rhyming with "orange"

  68. A.... C....

@Eamonn15ify You brought up some real good points..they do seem to be pretty famous all around the world..and they DID headline all those big festivals. I do agree that so many bands were strongly influenced by them. It's just that when I read that even Julian had wished they could have brought their cool music to more mainstream ears...it just reminded me how frustrated I get with the choices on the radio..so much crappy stuff being played..it just doesn't seem right!

  69. w.... w....

Guys , the strokes are NOT a secret . Look at Ireland , the UK , Australia and New Zealand . After 5 years of nothing , they can come back without an album and headline major summer festivals , be it T in the Park , Oxegen or Reading and Leeds . They re massive here , they ve completely reinvented a genre that had been in decline since Brit Pop and Girls bands. They re part of the reason that guitars have become so popular for young kids . Think how many bands have been influenced by them !

  70. A.... C....

@killanjo I agree..it's almost like a secret Strokes club..BUT..I do get frustrated that our really talented guys do not get the recognition they deserve..I read an interview just yesterday where Julian said "I wanted to bring underground, cool music to the mainstream-and since 2001 we haven't been able to do that" and he mentions bands like Green Day...STROKES MUSIC DESERVES TO BE HEARD!!! Who IS running these stupid radio stations???!!!

  71. A.... L....

@KatyForever93 the Strokes are like a special secret amongst us fans. people that dont know them dont know what great music theyre missing out on. that makes the Strokes even more special for me :)

  72. M.... ....

@KatyForever93 That makes two of us.

  73. J.... C....

how come the strokes aren't like someone everybody knows. when i bring up the strokes all i get are a bunch of " Who's???" i think i'm the only one in my school to know who they are...

  74. t.... ....

    This is so good.

  75. M.... S....

This guy just rhymed a word with orange... Julian Casablancas is a god.

  76. T.... ....

@MTrencher4life Listen to what he's saying, and interpret it your own way, not someone else's opinion on a website..how does it relate to you.

  77. T.... S....

@MTrencher4life maybe you'll find it in this site: songmeanings . net

  78. T.... S....

I love this like an unloved child love family traditions !

  79. M.... A....

    @YourMomJJCC oh lmfao you're right i forgot.

  80. C.... S....

LEAVE JULIAN MUSIC TO THE ONES THAT DESERVE IT

  81. C.... S....

@yourpainismygain Julian is not influenced by anyone how dare you say that

  82. C.... S....

@KicsiRamy um, do you really want a bunch of stupid little girls obsessing over him like idiots? I think its better this way, just leave Julian to the people who deserve him. I dont know about you but the last thing I would want is his image ruined by bieberfans, thank you. Just my opinion

  83. M.... A....

this song has such a dylan influence, and i love it. so beautiful man. julian is a genius.

  84. T.... ....

@KicsiRamy couldn't have said it better myself.

  85. D.... A....

He sounds like Bob Dylan here, weird, but not really...

  86. m.... ....

@KicsiRamy I agree with you, but maybe it's better if Julian and The Strokes are followed by people who can really appreciate how much they're good and talented =)

  87. C.... A....

    @68mastermind

If you knew anything about music you would know all folk musicians copy melodies and chord progressions that aren't their own. A lot of Bob Dylan's early songs copied chord progressions directly from old folk songs and Woody Guthrie songs. He had no shame in admitting this. All musicians copy each other, what matters is whether they or honest or not.

  88. B.... ....

@pupl0vr but you can actually understand Julian Casablancas ;) lol Bob Dylan is great, but I cant understand what hes saying half the time.

  89. n.... ....

    this is fucking brilliant.
