Carter Family, The - I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes Lyrics

Would've been better for us both had we never
In this wide and wicked world had never met
For the pleasure we've both seen together
I am sure, love, I'll never forget

Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
Who is sailing far over the sea
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
And I wonder if he ever thinks of me

Oh, you told me once, dear, that you loved me
You said that we never would part
But a link in the chain has been broken
Leaves me with a sad and aching heart

Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
Who is sailing far over the sea
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
And I wonder if he ever thinks of me

When the cold, cold grave shall enclose me
Will you come, dear, and shed just one tear
And say to the strangers around you
A poor heart you have broken lies here

Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
Who is sailing far over the sea
Oh, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes
And I wonder if he ever thinks of me

I absolutely loved the Ken Burns documentary, Country Music! The part where Sarah Carter fell in love with A.P.'s nephew was fascinating! I wish I could find out how Sarah &, I just can't think of his name, I know he heard this song playing on the family radio. His family was living in CA, & he heard Sarah dedicate this song to him! He went & found her, they were married a week later & he took her back to CA, but I don't know anything about them after that. If someone can direct me to a story about their lives, I really would appreciate it!

    R.... M....

    Coy Bays was his name.

There is a book titled "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone". I found it on eBay. Excellent book about the entire Carter Family.

  5. M.... N....

PBS brought me here. I can't stop listening to this after learning Sara dedicated it to her lover who was in Northern California. When he heard it, he traveled to TX and married her 2 weeks later.

    M.... N....

    True that

    M.... N....

That bit of the documentary was edited out of the version on the BBC. Shame.

  13. R.... G....

This is what today's Country Music OUGHT to be!

  14. V.... P....

Different tempo to hank snow version but still wonderful.

  15. K.... S....

    Beautiful, what can I say.

  16. l.... ....

To me, their generation (that of my grandparents) was the real American "Greatest Generation," and if you are able to hear, fell and understand the truth of this music you will understand why I say this.

    l.... ....

The real America pretty much died in the 50's.

  17. A.... M....

this is way too glossy and commercialized. Today's country music is more authentic.

    Just kidding

    A.... M....

    +nilbog44 Now THAT's funny!

    A.... M....

Today's county music is so much better. This music sucks.

    SAID NO ONE EVER

    A.... M....

    --hahahaha!!!!!!!!!

    A.... M....

For a moment there I thought "is he frickin' serious". Then I read "just kidding".....

These founders of country music in 1927 have no equal today, for this true music straight from the heart!

  20. M.... ....

That is the real version of this song.. lot of singers sing this song but not the real melody.

  21. t.... j....

My dads favorite was all Carter family songs. He would love to sing their songs and even listen to their records... I just
happened to listen their song on YuTube and has brought tears to my eyes... My dad should be 87 years old by now.. he passed away in 1998...Love listening to their songs..

  22. M.... S....

Thank you for sharing this great American country classic Fridrik! Ah yes. Yes, growing up here in the American midwest, I learned at an early age of this type of music. My Parents neither cared that much for this type. I could hear the words and now is easier to get the message being spoken in it! Simple and usually that of Love or a loved one! This is classic country. Then there is bluegrass. I love it all! From then thru to some of today's modern music! Thanks for sharing Fridrik! I for one, appreciate it! Mark.

    M.... S....

Already said it on the other post. It is a classic!!! :-)

  23. G.... R....

try Mes Yeux Blues by Cleoma Breaux Falcon

  24. P.... ....

I can't seem to reply to Matt Hibbard or FoodForWEF, but I thought I should mention that Hobo's Lullaby isn't a Woody Guthrie song.  While Woody did sing it, it was composed by Goebel Reeves.  I can see a little bit of similarity between Hobo's Lullaby and Blue Eyes, but they're definitely two different tunes.

  25. P.... ....

Even Bing Crosby recorded this song with the Woody Herman orchestra.  I'm a Bing Crosby fan, but I'm afraid I'd rather hear Sarah or Maybelle sing this one.

  26. M.... B....

Moved to Oregon from Bristol Tenn/Virg the folks there told me Ma and AP started Country music there ,my friend has a 1929 Record ,it seems to me they did but stay on the sunny side
       Thanks

  27. l.... ....

those songs can save the world.

  28. s.... t....

the strumming technique was called the carter scratch

  29. J.... D....

A.P. captured a large part of the Southern American songbook before it disappeared forever. Maybelle Carter had a unique strumming technique. Their songs are consistent with the plain simple soil in which they were planted and grew. Touching tails of ordinary people.

  30. R.... ....

It is mountain shape note singing.

  31. i.... ....

I know I'm going to get hit on this one, but I have never understood why these people are so worshipped. The singing and the delivery are passionless, and I've never been pointed to an example where I've heard anything else. Now later on, June could belt out a song, but she was an awful singer, which she admitted. Is there any example of these folks just cutting loose?

    i.... ....

Try listening to Anita Carter's original version of Ring of Fire, which is available on YouTube.

  32. F.... ....

Woodie probably stole it for his song. He stole almost all of the Carter Family tunes to use in his songs.
He's not the only one. June used to play a game where she would listen to a random song on the radio and then sing the Carter Family tune it came from.
I wouldn't get too upset, AP "arranged" traditional songs far more often than he composed new ones.

  33. S.... W....

Yes I agree Wilf Carter did sing this the best.. Have you found it yet! Post it when you do? thanks.

  34. D.... R....

    GOD I MISS MY GRAMPA!!

  35. O.... ....

Good luck! It's great to hear these old songs live on.

  36. M.... M....

if this is classic country than classic rock should be little richard or chuck berry not foreigner or supertramp. i wouldnt say this is classic country it just is country pure. plain and simple.

  37. p.... ....

    I agree!

  38. C.... W....

I was corrected by a DJ that the Carter Family is considered to be Classic Country. Grew up myself thinking they were bluegrass.

  39. t.... ....

I wish someone would upload Wilf Carter's version. I'd bawl for hours listening to him sing it.

  40. M.... H....

sounds a little like hobo's lullabye by woody :)

  41. V.... ....

@wmoday All of this is true, but Vernon Dalhart recorded "the Prisoner's Song" to the same melody in 1925. The melody has been #1 five times, by 5 different singers, and 5 different sets of lyrics. Truly amazing!

  42. t.... ....

Marianne, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes.

  43. C.... B....

    @gelorza08

  44. G.... E....

i love the carter family, every since i was 12 yrs old, we got our first tv, i remember watching dear maybelle carter singing and playing, wow!!!!! fr brooklyn , nfld

  47. T.... V....

This is perhaps one of the most cherished songs of all time, if you love the true 'oldies' as I do.

  48. A.... F....

She is singing about a boy she loved who moved to California. When he heard this song on the radio he immediately headed back home and married her.How romantic!!!

    A.... F....

Except Sara was married to A.P. ........ Poor ol A.P.

    A.... F....

@Bare Grilles Sara divorced A.P. He was the cause of her falling in love with another man. He had asked his cousin to care for her while he was away and she fell in love with A.P.'s cousin. A.P. was focused more on his music career and didn't realize how it was causing her to drift away. However, A.P. really did love Sara, he just didn't realize how much he was hurting her. And I believe he just didn't know how to show his love to her. It was a very sad situation.

  49. w.... ....

    I love Sara

  50. F.... G....

my grandpa used to play this song for me when i was a little girl on his banjo because i had blue eyes i miss him! the song stuck with me!

  51. m.... ....

THis is true I love this story. The sadness in both Sara and AP's life is as important to their story as the music

  52. g.... ....

This is the song that inspired me to play the guitar!

  53. b.... ....

This is a very nice song, and it's nice to hear it! It is weird to think of, when the Carters were at XERA Sara Carter Bays dedicated this song to a friend in California, Coy Bays. Coys family sat and listened, and so Coy drove all the way to Texas that night to find her, and in three weeks Coy and Sara were married!

  54. d.... d....

    what alovely song

  55. j.... ....
