I remember vividly the day she died. I was watching the news, I was just a young boy at the time, and my mom came in the room and heard that Karen had died. She gasped, saying “No!” and sat down on the couch as she started weeping. I cried too. The next day we drove up to Downey to leave flowers outside of her house. There were a lot of people there, crying, but mostly everybody was just silent; it was so quiet all we heard were the sounds of the crinkling cellophane that wrapped around the flowers as they were placed on her lawn.

It used to hurt me to look at her , so skinny with a voice that belonged in a Heavenly Choir , where it is now . God bless you Karen , you gave us so much joy with your singing ......RIP sweet girl

This song always rips my heart out.Mainly due to the fact it was played at the start of the Karen Carpenter story. But her voice just gets to me, be the sad songs or the happy ones. Hers is a voice that will live on forever, many artists from her time sing her praises and those that do are legends.

One of my favorite songs of hers...can tell this performance was from early on, as she made the agreement later in her career to step to the front (away from the drums, engage the audience) whenever it was a ballad - which she so excelled in singing.

ocean , in a boat rocking everywhere, trying not to sink ...with a bucket in my hand throwing the water out as fast as it comes in...I never took my eye off the light house , getting hit with the salty cold ocean water ...I never once took my eye off the light of her because , I didnt know how long i had and didnt want to waste one second , even oblivious to the storm around me ... I loved her ..for a sec I said weres the life jackets but I never put one on , if I was going to sink at least I loved once in my life ..♥️....

I was a child in the 70's. We took the Carpenters for granted. This was just everyday music on the radio. Only now in my mid 50's do I truly appreciate the beauty and rarity of Karen's voice.

I've always wondered if that song was a cry for help, but probably not. I guess it is a coincidence she died a few years later with an eating disorder.

Well, in order for it to be Karen's cry for help she would've had to have written it, don't you agree? She didn't (she didn't write any song in fact, she wasn't what you call a singer/songwriter). Also, neither she or Richard are ever on record saying anything about this song being their favourite or carrying special meaning for either of them. However, Richard has stated in multiple interviews that 'I Need To Be In Love' was Karen's favourite Carpenters song, so if there ever was a cry for help (or for finding true love and starting a family, more likely) then that was it (even though she didn't write that one either).
Personally I don't care much for 'I Need To Be In Love' and I definitely like 'Rainy Days...' more, but I can see how the former song's lyrics could hit closer to home and resonate more with Karen as that was what was really missing in her life.

She should have stayed on the drums. She loved playing and to me she never "belonged" out in front or seemed comfortable out there. If people wanted to "see her," she could have come out from behind and taken bows. It was their music that was important and is what people enjoyed the most, not Karen being awkward and self-conscious. It was a huge mistake taking her off the drums where she was comfortable and happy.
