Carpenter, Mary Chapin - Our Man Walter Cronkite Lyrics

Where are the arms of the world?
They've always been able to find us
Caught between borders and shores
Reaching past danger and blindness

My mother wept over the headlines
The Beatles appeared in my dreams
"Ooh, boy", exclaimed our man Walter Cronkite
As the eagle touched down on blurry TV

And where are the eyes of the world?
They've always been able to see you
Why did you give up and turn away,
At the moment that so many need you?

And the sight of children in cages
While dog whistles stink up the place
Everything's different
But nothing much changes
Our man Walter Cronkite would be on the case

And what will you miss when you're gone?
Lovers and songs and the light ever-changing
And the sense that once you belonged
To something amazing
It was something amazing

Where is the heart of the world?
I always believed it could love me
It's one of those things without words
Like the sight of the stars shining above me

My father rode trains Monday to Friday
His chin fell asleep on his chest
And I carry what's left somewhere inside me
And our man Walter Cronkite has gone to his rest
Our man Walter Cronkite is gone

Carpenter, Mary Chapin Our Man Walter Cronkite Comments

very sad song, but so so true.
I remember these times. I was really into technology, my father was a radar technician.
he taught me electronics from a very young age.
one night, just before i left school i sat & watched the apollo 11 moon landing. In the uk this was covered by James Burke and sir Patrick Moore. from time to time they showed a link to one Walter Cronkite - briliant!
I suddenly realised it was daylight & felt hungry. so i had a full tin of grapefruit. This was the best I'd ever tasted!
it still seems 'only a dream'.
    thankyou Mary.

    Mary never lets me down.

  3. T.... G....

Prior to this song, I have often wonder what Walter Cronkite would think of our current GOP. So sad....

This song is so very meaningful to me for a number of reasons. Each time I hear it I re-envision coming home from school the day JFK was assassinated, and finding my mother siting in the kitchen, on the phone with a friend, bawling her eyes out. I remember those days so clearly.

    f.... ....

Yep, same thing happened to me, except my mother was in the living room chair and not on the phone. They let school out early.

Great Song Great Video. Loved hearing live last month glad it is out!

Heard this in Kansas City, some two months ago, live. Like Chapin, I look back and wonder at times "what in the hell has happened to us?", yet I look from the view of someone who delivered news on radio for some 33 years, and who had the honor of meeting Walter Cronkite in the 90's, at a symposium at Arkansas State University. He said he wished he hadn't retired in 1981. I absolutely agree.

One person can make a difference.

  12. D.... T....

I had a problem distinguishing the vocal from the instrumental. The tone and volume were too similar. I couldn't catch the lyrics.

  13. L.... ....

    Powerful video, and so moving

  14. L.... K....

Saw her perform this song on stage last night, love it! Thought provoking song at this time in our country.

  15. A.... H....

This song touches me so deeply. When I first heard it live, I found myself unexpectedly in tears. "And the sense that once you belonged to something amazing..."

  16. j.... s....

    Thank you, MCC!

  17. E.... ....

It's 2019 and I cannot believe that these rural, small town republican voting bumpkins have the votes and voices to manipulate elections in their favor. We need 100 Walter Cronkites to silence their backwardness with progressive fact. Ban these conservative and centrist to right retrogrades from TV, social media and every other platform. Bring in the demographic shift and only then will things get back on the right track. One successive Democratic Party president after another for decades upon decades and these republican voters won't be stinking up the place with their ignorant voting patterns. Progressive all the way!

    E.... ....

And you actually are American? You sicken me.

    E.... ....

@Steven Dee Notice my comment got three thumbs up? One of the top comments. What do you think this music video is about? Who do you think makes up the majority of MCC's fan base now?

    E.... ....

@Evangel I could care less how many thumbs up you got. And I've been a fan of her probably before you were born. So what? You sicken me. You are the problem.

    E.... ....

@Steven Dee not my doing that these people who upvoted me are proudly anti-rural and anti-patriotism

    E.... ....

@Evangel the fact that you are proud of that at all is disturbing. I think you would be much happier in another country. We will all be much happier when you leave. Goodbye.

  18. D.... W....

I love seeing the USA through the words and music of MCC. My great fortune to have her music in my life and this song so beautifully crafted

  19. N.... H....

    The best, as usual.
