Carolina Chocolate Drops - Trampled Rose Lyrics

Long way I'm going to get my medicine
Sky's the autumn grey of a lonely wren
Lone piano from a window playin'
Gone tomorrow, gone yesterday
Found it in the street, at first I could not see
Lying at my feet, a trampled rose
Passing the hat in church, never stops going 'round
You never pay just once to get the job done
What I done to you, I've done to me
So what happened to the trampled rose?
Out in the muddy streets, 'neath the fireworks and leaves
A blind man with a cup, I asked
If he could sing "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine"
I know this rose like I know my name
The one I give my love, it was the same
And now I find it in the street, a trampled rose

I don't really listen to this neo-old time music or whatever but I did get into Charlie Crockett recently and was surprised to find him covering Wait's Cold Water. then this. I feel like I'm coming the other way around though 'cause I've listened to tons of that old music without ever really connecting it to Tom's stuff. I do know he did the liner notes for a box set of old disaster songs I bought once - I guess I wasn't paying attention
