Carolina Chocolate Drops - Country Girl Lyrics

I was raised in the country, that's a natural fact
Food on the table from the garden out back
Everyone working to make the land their own
Red clay crackin' where the silver queen grows

Runnin' with your cousins from yard to yard
Livin' was easy but the playin' was hard
Didn't have much, nothing comes for free
All you needed was your family

I am a country girl
I've been around the world
And every place I've been
Ain't quite nothin' like
Livin' in the South
Oh honey, shut your mouth
I am a country girl
I am a country girl

Biscuits in the morning and gravy too
Fried chicken in the afternoon
Jaw draggin', eatin' sweet potato pie
Takin' half an hour to say goodbye
Blackberry patches scuffin' on by
Sweet Georgia peaches and dandelion wine
The best kind of food is made by hand
The only place to get it is from the land

I am a country girl
I've been around the world
And every place I've been
Ain't got nothin' like
Livin' in the South
Oh honey, shut your mouth
I am a country girl
I am a country girl

All day I dream about a place in the sun
Kinda like where I'm from
With the tall grass blowin' in the breeze
Runnin' barefoot 'round the tall oak tree
All day, I dream about a place I've been
A place where the skin I'm in
Feels like its supposed to be
And anyone around who looks at me says

I am a country girl
I've been around the world
And every place I've been
Ain't got nothin' like
Livin' in the South
Oh honey, shut your mouth
I am a country girl
I am a country girl

Livin' in the south
Oh honey, shut your mouth

I was born in the country, that's a natural fact
On these long city days I wanna look back
See tobacco fields a row after row
Red clay a crackin' where the silver queen grows

Carolina Chocolate Drops Country Girl Comments
  1. J.... M....

I saw them perform this song in Telluride, Colorado at the annual Country and Bluegrass Festival , and then, again on the 2014 Mountain Song at Sea Music Cruise. Now, Rhiannon is no longer a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but she has continued to perform as a solo artist and is currently a Grammy nominee! See her if you can!

  2. J.... J....

The lead singer is one of Linda Ronstadt's favourites. She and the band are excellent!

  3. H.... M....

I just love them and their music! 🌹

  4. S.... C....

Revolutionary and beautiful! Nothing can bring people together like a celebration of diversity and unity!

  5. F.... B....

I believe that is Boo Hanks outside his trailer.

  6. a.... s....

This video needs 2 million views.

  7. C.... B....

Addictive and brings me back to my days as a simple country girl around the world

  8. E.... W....

Heard about you all from a Linda Ronstadt Interview - I agree with her - you are ONE GREAT singer!!!

  9. J.... O....

Damn! Talent and originality! I like these guys.

  10. C.... H....

This is really good you guys!!! I never get tired of this!

  11. h.... b....

Her voice is as beautiful as she is. She has so much talent.

  12. S.... ....

If someone gave this a thumbs down, then they just don't like music.

  13. C.... ....

    She FINE

  14. F.... ....

I think Giddens and her band will get bigger & bigger. Rightfully so, they are very talented.

  15. M.... a....

She went to collage with my music teacher

  16. .... ....

somehow resembles a young natalie merchand... great tune

  17. J.... J....

Love the lyrics in this song. I am not a country girl, I am a country boy! This band rocks

  18. L.... G....

Talent is just dripping all over the place. Damn this is real music.

  19. S.... R....

This is shrimp and grits, collards, fried chicken, and sausage gravy biscuits.

    S.... R....

    Red eye gravy

    S.... R....

Naw, this is Appalachian salt-cured country ham

    S.... R....

@Nightman Cometh - No, there is nothing Appalachian about them.

  20. B.... S....

Take it from a Florida boy, this is the real deal right here. This is Gullah/Geechie music, brought straight from Africa along with the banjo. Those people did more than survive an ordeal, they set a standard for living free in the midst of it. There wouldn't be Bluegrass in Kentucky if the Gullah people never made baskets from Lowcountry sweetgrass.

    B.... S....

Sweetgrass baskets, rare as an honest man in Washington DC. http://www.edistosweetgrassbaskets.net

    B.... S....

    Wooww.. never knew🤷🏽‍♀️

    B.... S....

I'm think gonna need a couple blanks filled in here in regards to how bluegrass is dependent on baskets, regardless of what they were made of

  21. J.... L....

    OMG the lady clogs too!

  22. J.... S....

oh my gosh!!! Cheerwine... I want some so bad. don't get it in Germany :(

  23. m.... ....

I swear this song was influenced by Show of Hands "Roots".

  24. T.... N....

Whoever directed this did a masterful job. We see such decisiveness through our traditional media because it stirs up trouble, which gets people reading, watching and arguing. Fact of the matter is that there is waaaaay more harmony here in the south than there is in the rest of the nation. A place where a handshake and someone's word still means something.

  25. A.... P....

So, I saw the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Pittsburgh Arts Festival a few years back, and, during their performance (which was amazing) they performed a song that sounded gaelic, it featured a pounding drum and soaring vocals, but I cannot for the life of me remember the title, or even a better description for the style.

    Can anyone help me out?

    A.... P....

v=aChSCpczhzo that's maybe the song you are looking for ..

    A.... P....

Maybe that was boodle de bam bam

  38. D.... B....

This is my first time to hear this group. I'm glad I just happened by. Keep up the good work and keep the good sounds coming. Thanks for the up load. Great voice, God Bless.

  39. S.... B....

Now this is real country music, not that bland garbage that Nashville grinds out like sausage. Carolina Chocolate Drops is a true national treasure. Rhiannon Giddens has the voice of an angel.

    S.... B....

Take it from a Florida boy, this is the real deal, right here. This is Gullah/ Geechie music, brought straight from Africa along with the banjo. 52. N.... ....

Wow. That woman can sing. Great band.

  53. B.... 8....

And I'm a city slicker. Just not a carpet bagger or a scalawag!

  54. w.... c....

    rockin' country Girl

  55. C.... ....

If ever there were a band that didn't need fancy production and a music video. Still, awesome.

    C.... ....

If it spreads this wonderful culture and music to a wider audience, I see no problem with it.  I love the traditional music, it's what attracted me to CCD to begin with, but I also think this is a great fusion sound, an entertaining and applicable video, and a great song, period.  The way I have been introduced to most of my favorite musicians is through their "pop" hits, regardless of genre. Once they got their hooks in me, I was sold, and if this reaches a new audience, some of which may have that "eureka" moment of new musical discovery that I love so much as a result of it, then I'm all for it!

    C.... ....

yeah, I've have never seen her look less country, but the music is still tight.

    C.... ....

@Crapweeds Yeah, I agree with that sentiment in pretty much its whole form.

  56. N.... E....

I like some mainstream music, but I wish all the different country sounds could be in mainstream. I just recently discovered this band, and they are quickly becoming one of my favorites. A  bunch of talented people.

  77. .... H....

Nice to hear some AA voice and input in this folk resurgence, considering what a historical import and influence AA culture had on the foundations of this country and it's music... to say the least.  Great song, can even forgive the costumed attire for the taste of southern authenticity offered.

  78. O.... T....

I saw you guys on the PBS documentary about Americana Music. As soon as I heard ya'll, I knew it was going to be amazing! I LOVE LOVE LOVE yalls sound. Thank you for sharing it with the world! I look forward to watching ya'll become a household name :D
