Carly Simon - We're So Close Lyrics

I've lived in all of the houses he's built
The one in the air
The one underground
The one on the water
The one in the sand
He says: It doesn't matter how we live
He says: It doesn't matter where we live
We're so close we can dispense with houses
We don't need a home at all

It's come to be a habit with me to dine alone
You're never home
And the evenings end so early
He says: we can be close from afar
He says: the closest people always are
We're so close that in our separation,
There's no distance at all.

Sometimes I gout to the car,
Turn on the headlights
Intending to leave-
Sometimes I need to hear the words,
My imagination's not as strong as you'd believe-
But I've talked to you;
You haven't listened at all.
I've said I'm numb,
I can't even cry,
I'm stuck with acting out a part.
He says: what do words ever reveal?
He says: in speaking one can be so false-
We're so close we have a silent language,
We don't need words at all.

There's a husky voice
That speaks to me in the dark
And on the phone from studios
And Westside bars,
Through tunnels of long distance.
He says: we're beyond flowers
He says: We're beyond compliments-
We're so close we can dispense with love
We don't need love at all.

So much emotion and sadness she is so beautiful  I just love everything she does.

  2. John Jackson

Such emotion in this song and she looks heart broken

  3. A Blast From Your Past

    A Blast From My Past

  4. jaz zander

It's incredible! I don't think the capacity of emotion dies, it just sometimes becomes confused as to whether it steps over the border from true love to being in despair and the hurt that goes with it.
I've tried, but it's not in the realm of free will to decide. It's beyond my scope of what I want to make me happy and at peace

Ms. Simon says this is "the saddest song she ever wrote." Now I see why. Heartbreaking, really.

    Judy Hendrickson

Sad but I would say Idont need you!!!

    Judy Hendrickson

Carly you ARE BEAUTIFUL ABSOLUTELY!!!YOU DONT NEED JAMESAT ALL!!!

    Denisee Bucher

Catherine S. Todd oh my god this is the saddest song I have ever heard. A masterpiece.

  19. Petr Slivinski

A lovely and gifted singer/songwriter.  First time I'm watching the video.  The song is pretty and fits our lovely Ms. Simon's melodious voice like a glove.

  20. missinglowell

love revisiting videos and seeing the 'invisible' players again .... David Sanborn and Tony Levin here ... WOW.

  21. Ademir Pacheco

    Sempre sera minha linda!!!

  22. felix thecat

I remember watching this in '79 and thinking - God, I hope she doesn't screw up.  Elektra messed up.  This album should have been promoted more.  There are several great songs on the album that could have been big hits.

    Petr Slivinski

I think she did pretty damn good for herself despite the fact that the Execs at Elektra/Asylum Records didn't push too much.

  23. V Ant

Carly's music was the "soundtrack" to some of the best moments and some some of the most heart wrenching moments of my life. Always has been, and will be, my favorite singer, ever.

  24. Brianeddie666

16 yrs old, started my first job, and immediatly began a love affair with a co-worker. Dumb teenager, dumb thing to do i know. The co-worker was 19, and free, i was in HS and still living with my folks. Really fell for the co-worker, who broke off the affiar for someone else, which broke my heart. I had just found this song, and remember it going thru my head over and over. Sure rang true for me! And, eventually did help heal the pupply love wounds. Thanks Carly.

  25. DirectorDonP

Such a knockout beautiful song. Can the glitch be fixed? Such a shame...!

  26. Leandro the light

    Perfection!!!

  27. marina312a

an ironic prayer, what beautiful poetry to the history of the life of james and carly taylor. You are a such a great song writer, an Icon.

  28. 1asset

best song she ever wrote, and the saddest. thinking maybe the 3 dislikes had to do with a big skip at "there's no distance at all," but as this may be the best version on youtube i'll take it any way i can get it. big fan since she first started tho i was a kid then...

  29. kateandphoebe

    Thanks!!

  30. The_eye_which_sees_within

how could you not fall in love with her just sayin'

  32. Brianeddie666

We're so close we can dispense with love,,,,we dont need love at all.

  33. missinglowell

this was her second appearance on SNL (promoting "Spy"); I read in Sheila Weller's book that she pre-recorded her first appearance (pregnant, fall of 1976) because of stage fright/nerves, so would explain lip-synching here - saw both appearances the night they originally aired (yeah, I'm THAT old), and you could'a fooled me! ~ but then I already had all the lyrics indelibly stamped in my brain, and wouldn't have noticed :)

  34. missinglowell

this is from 1979's "Spy", and she was separated by 1980 ~ hmmmnnnnn . . .

  35. kateandphoebe

Which real-life Carly Simon lover was this song about?

  36. kateandphoebe

And who were the 3 people who "Disliked" this song?

  37. The_eye_which_sees_within

@MrJeffbazell1 That's how most videos were made back then. Nothing was live.

  38. Laurence Smith

I don't know how anyone could not love this elegant and profound love song. Carly has always been a classy woman from day one. Carly has lived so many of the love songs that she sings. Carly has NEVER been in the news for anything negative. No drug or sex scandals for this queen of class!

  39. Larry Gentry

she's always spoken her own particular truth

  40. treg1980

This song is so beautiful--heart-wrenching, really. Carly is so talented and has a one-of-a-kind voice. I love this lady! The song is elegant and the words and mood blend perfectly with the music and arrangement. Here is real artistic talent. She's a poet. A star!

  45. Philip Vanguard

  53. SolarXdame

    Best female artist....EVER!!!

  54. swampzoid

this song is a part of me

  55. bonjourdadou

This has got to be one of her most perfect songs. I'm pretty sure she's lipsyncing here because it sounds exactly like the album version, but it's still great to see her do it. Love you, Carly.

  56. D brown

i wish she would bring out a cd with all her video recordings

  57. missinglowell

this has to be one of her saddest snapshots of a (her) relationship; she's at her best singing from her own experience, and not trying to please the record company. She's in a class by herself, bringing lyrics and music together to a pain everyone can relate to ...

  58. bball1518

this is Carly's most underated album.close to her 1st album.Carly has a new cd coming in oct,2009.

  59. swampzoid

omagod - this is a gem.
