Cantrell, Jerry - Dying Inside Lyrics

Long fat green, love what you do, so young must be nice
Roll first class, limousine drool, packed house every night

Hey rock star, got a cold beer? Sure you don't mind do you?
Ain't life sweet, party non-stop, 24/7 - cool

So proud would be your mother
Anything you want, pick your lover
From here looks so fine
My god how your star shines...

Dying inside

Live your dream, walk in those shoes, trade with you any time
Worldwide name, freedom much fame, spinning gold song and rhyme

So proud would be your mother
Anything you want, pick your lover
From here looks so fine
My god how your star shines...

Dying inside

My god how your star shines...

Dying inside

Play, get paid, couple sports cars, sure you done paid your dues
Big house own, no boss fun, lucky fuck wish I was you

So proud would be your mother
Anything you want, pick your lover
From here looks so fine
My god how your star shines...

Dying inside

My god how your star shines...

Dying inside

Why does this only have 69 k views? This is incredible.Definetly one of the darkest songs ive heard from Jerry.Just because Layne is not singing with him does not mean its bad and i absolutely love Layne and his singing, but Jerry is also really good.

  7. D.... B....

Was Layne involved in this song?

    D.... B....

    to my knowledge, no

    D.... B....

@jobriathboy Layne died while this album was in production. Around that time he secluded himself from everyone.

  8. E.... D....

    Hell yeah. Essence of music!

  9. S.... B....

    Awesome albums by jerry

The truth is, the true genius of the band was and is and has always been Jerry Cantrell. Layne was the soul of the band because everything about him was just...the music they made. The darkness, the hauntingness. Layne was the embodiment of the band and it's message. The voice and basically the soul. But Jerry was the genius. The heart of it.

  11. N.... N....

    Jerry 🎵💛

    Cantrell No.1

  13. N.... ....

    Fuck you 7 dislikers motherfuckers

  14. K.... f....

Was just reading that Rob and Mike have been trying for years to revisit this album and tour with it but it's still too too painful for Jerry as he wasn't sober and AIC had just dissolved then Layne passed right after it was released,Jerry says maybe one of these years🤞

  15. L.... F....

I truly believe this is one of the greatest albums of all time.

  16. T.... P....

You can almost hear Laynes wail along with Jerry.... he still writes as if he’s with him.
    GOD DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!

    T.... P....

Listen to whatever it takes jerrys harmonies sound like layne. Why does this surprise people? Its not some rip off of laynes style it is a natural progression for jerry. He spent over 10 years in the pocket. My god his vocals are all over those records, most of us didnt discover that until layne died just as d trip launched.

  17. J.... S....

I feel for jerry lot of his friends died in the lifestyle of fame rip Seattle brothers

  18. s.... v....

I don't know about you guys but these solo albums basically are AIC continued. In fact, I like how they were recorded with a heavier, thicker bass sound for the most part.

    s.... v....

Rob Trujillo...played with BLS, Metallica, both of the Degradation Trip albums.
    Master bassist.

  19. J.... H....

    Mike starr would be proud

Would anyone happen to play bass on here, and know the tabs to this particular song? I’d really, really appreciate it, thanks in advance. 💕

  22. J.... D....

Layne is definitely there in spirit
    It’s eerie..

  27. K.... A....

    Jerry writes the best songs.

  28. w.... ....

Staley would've proly improved the dumb lyrics

    w.... ....

i suppose you're entitled to your opinion, but i don't find any of the lyrics in this song to be "dumb"... to each their own i guess...

    w.... ....

+worldz Can you write better lyrics? I would LOVE to hear them.

    w.... ....

worldz Cantrell actually wrote both lyrics and music to all the best songs from AIC - Down in a Hole, No Excuses, Would, Grind, Heaven Beside You, Brother, Them Bones, Rooster, We Die Young and etc.

    w.... ....

worldz Cantrell wrote 75% of chains u twit so guess u don't like it either.

    w.... ....

What are you talking about? The lyrics are great as always. Its freaking Jerry Cantrel! I was never, ever disappointed with any of his lyrics.I agree that the lyrics could have been even better with Layne in help, but saying that the lyrics suck without him is just stupid.

  29. W.... D....

love this song!!! cantrell is also one fucking master on making riffs

  30. I.... F....

Jerry was AIC and will always be!!

    I.... F....

Ignaas Falk so true yet so so wrong saw him open for Metallica while Layne was alive Layne n him was sooo much better that rock star up there on vocals rip layne!

    I.... F....

If Jerry went alice would be done hes the main song writer

    I.... F....

    @Will Martins saw the same show,days of the new,Jerry Cantrell,Metallica in '97 or '98 great line-up

  31. T.... ....

how does this only have 35k views? tf..

  32. A.... ....

Funny how so many say the dark tone of AIC came from Layne only. Layne was the soul of Alice in Chains but Jerry was always the heart of the band.

    A.... ....

it was definitely a combination of the two of them... it was magic, that's for sure...

    A.... ....

AmonRa seriously. They are all as equally as talented.

    A.... ....

I like AIC music because of both Cantrell & Staley...AIC (Layne era) was just the best for me. I mean they both made AIC so unique (with no offense to the other members...they have their respective roles as well ofc)...and Cantrell really impressed me with his Degradation Trip album...some cool music for my ears.

    A.... ....

Layne was the heart . Jerry is the soul of AiC. You can get a heart transplant but you can't get a soul transplant.

    A.... ....

@Bryan Cawley Definitely. Jerry was the brains while Layne was the heart & soul.

  33. A.... F....

That expectation hearing this sound suddenly hear Layne Staley singing the second part with that fucking voice he had .. Dude ... what a feeling of suffocation ..

  34. A.... O....

This was pretty much the material for the next AiC album, no? I read he wrote most kf this in 97-98 and it tooks years shopping it to labels until roadrunner bit

  35. D.... G....

love this song!!!!! would have sounded so sick with Staley singing over top of it!!!!

  36. D.... ....

Anyone know the chords for the acoustic part at the beginning before he starts singing?

    D.... ....

    i believe it's the same chords that are used in the verses... if memory serves correctly they are A - C - B, then G - A# - A, then F - G# - G then E... and your guitar is tuned completely down one full step (D - G - C - F - A - D)

    D.... ....

he also plays all the chords as barre chords with the root note being played on the 1st string... so, for example, the first chord is not played in open position (0 - 0 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 0, low to high strings), it is played as a barre chord on the 5th fret (5 - 7 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 5), as are all of the other chords (except the final e chord, obviously)...

    D.... ....

    +jobriathboy cool, thanks a lot man :)

    D.... ....

no problem, hopefully my memory was accurate :)

  37. d.... ....

My favorite of Jerry's recent songs!
    Love the melody and vocals
    So memorable and perfect

As good as the best of AIC in my opinion
Keeping the spirit of the music going with style and power, Mr. Cantrell!
One of the best of creative heavy beautiful music
A master of guitar composition and song production

A truly definitive contemporary U.S. composer
Still the best! Would love to see in concert :D

    d.... ....

i'd definitely have to agree... this riff, along with the one from Anger Rising are just incredible, absolutely top-shelf compositions... the lyrics to both are quite personal observations of a life, and are very direct and to the point, but still musical within the context of the song... i can't tell you how many times i've just sat with this song on repeat... it should be included in the "Rock Star 101" course that so many have wished existed before they became a part of the music industry...

  38. M.... O....

My god, how your star shines

  39. E.... G....

Does anyone now in what guitar tuning is this ?

    E.... G....

+Eddie Garza i'm pretty sure it's all tuned down a full step, at least the acoustic intro is... with the riff the way it is, i'm thinking the electric parts are as well...

    E.... G....

    Thank you!!

    E.... G....

Doped Down high is the tuning full step down

    E.... G....

    it's definitely standard tuning, tuned down a full step... so low to high it's D, G, C, F, A, D

    E.... G....

    Dropped Sludge tuning ;)

  40. f.... ....

great song! Jerry is a god. This wonderful band got two genius!

    @jobriathboy Hey Sean,
I do indeed still have my cassette of the rough mix of The Silent Majority. Brian gave it to me about 6 to 8 weeks before it came out. I remember thinking it sounded a little muddy, but I reasoned that it was due to it being a rough mix, AND on cassette. I was a little bummed when it came out and sounded almost just like what I already had. To me, the choice of producer, AND going out to Nebraska or wherever it was is what greatly helped lead to the bands demise. I was at The Whisky the night ALL of the labels had their people out to see this "crazy band of misfits" from Chicago, and this singer, Stanley. At that time, it was either the most, or second most, to Guns n' Roses "coming out party" for a label to sign these guys. Mike Clink was there, (who DID produce Apettite For Destruction, and wanted badly to produce LSD). They wound up going with John Purdell because he had done a good job on Ozzy's No More Tears. Clink had done UFO' Obsession as assistant to Ron Nevison, and Slash LOVED that sound. Plus, LSD and White Zombie were both getting a lot of airplay on Beavis And Butthead, and that translated to tons of new fans, etc. I have always believed that if Clink or Nevison had done Silent Majority they would have struck dynamite! White Zombie became, well, you know what they became. My pals could have gone supersonic. Hard to even imagine.
Anyway, I live in Burbank, Cali. You can throw a stone in any direction and hit a recording studio. I'm going to try and get ahold of Eric Valentine, and see if he would copy it for me. He did Slash's R&Fn'R album, and Apocolyptic Love. I am really tight with Tony Hudson, Slash's Dad. Not that it may matter, but maybe he will burn me a few. I'll let you know what happens. You can email me direct at

Please send me your direct email too, so I can communicate with you easier.

    Staley would b Proud

    c.... z....

Garrett That's Me What the Hell Have I was written by Cantrell. A Little bitter was written by Layne. Died and Get Born Again were leftover tracks from Degradation Trip. Jerry wanted to restart the band and sent Layne those songs. Layne liked them enough to write lyrics for them. When they recorded the two songs they had to rewrite some of the lyrics for both songs so Layne's lisp wasn't noticeable. Layne did more lyrics on tripod because that was the only thing he could do. Majority of the songs were already done and recorded by the time he wrote the lyrics on those songs. He wasn't as present during the songwriting process on tripod as previous albums which is why tripod took longer than the other albums. My point still stands. Both shared lyrics duties almost equally but Cantrell wrote 94% of the music.

    c.... z....

Rotten Apple I've never said anything about the music. Just the lyrics. You're the one going on about that. They definitely shared some duties but Layne had a bigger part of writing the lyrics than what most people think.

    c.... z....

thesecond yeah he was listen to the song gone its been documented

    c.... z....

Wait layne was on 31 32

    c.... z....

I can't help but to feel like this was intended for Layne to sing on. I don't know the history of this song when it was written or conceived, but I can only imagine it was a potential new song for AIC like "the killer is me"

  43. i.... ....

this is exactly what happened to layne,he got caught up in the fame,no rules and it done him in.

    i.... ....

I think this song was jerry writing about his own warped perception of rock stardom. Personally it could go either way, bit jerry has said he was himself disillusioned with fame.

  44. b.... ....

Always been a huge Layne fan, but tbh, this song along with both degregation trip albums, r really fucking growing on me!! Excellent stuff right here

    b.... ....

blacktwofight11 Each one had a voice that could convey emotion in a heavy way. I think, for as much as the voice of each complemented the other in Alice in Chains, Layne's was often the more emphasized. With Degradation Trip, especially, Jerry really pushed himself and went balls out on the vocals. This was where the band was more or less on its way out (in their minds), Layne was on his last leg, and Jerry was coming apart. All of that together took Jerry to a place that was both unstable and creatively unstoppable. As he put it, he basically locked himself in his house and went insane until he got out what he had to. It reminds me of the recent Alice Cooper documentary where Alice speaks of his cocaine addiction. With artistic genius often comes a heavy toll. Some pay it with perseverance and, unfortunately, some pay it with their lives.

  45. n.... ....

    fkin great!
