Campbell, Glen - Bonaparte's Retreat Lyrics
Met the girl I-I love in a town way down in Dixie
Beneath the stars up above
She was the sweetest girl I ever did see
So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms, I
The Bonaparte's Retreat
Guitar....
All the world wa-as bright as I held her on that night
And I heard her-er say
Please don't you go away
So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms, I
Kissed her while the bagpipe played
The Bonaparte's Retreat
Well I met the girl I-I love in a town way down in Dixie
Beneath the stars up above
She was the sweetest girl I ever did see
So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms, I
Kissed her while the fiddles played
The Bonaparte's Retreat
Fiddle...
All the world wa-as bright as I held her on that night
And I heard her-er say
Please don't you go away
So I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms, I
Kissed her while everybody played
The Bonaparte's Retreat
Everybody...
Yes I held her in my arms and told her of her many charms, I
Kissed her while everybody's playin'
The Bonaparte's Retreat
Yes I held her in my arms, I told her of her many charms, and I
Kissed her while everybody's playin' [Fade]

this is one of the best up tempo songs ,written by William strepp in 1937 ,great for that period
Michael Colgrave that might be when the lyrics were written, but the tune has been around since the early 1800s.
I thought Buck Owens recorded this song too
Guy Lombardo made the best version back in the 40's Gene Krupa also did this song but it wasn't as good.
this song is so much fun

Check out Ireland's Brendan Quinn version on the "Late Show".
I heard this song years ago never figured out the name till now took me half as hour to find it this is the type of music I always listened to never since I was really little only 15 still listen to the same old music
Way before his solo career Glen was part of the "wrecking Crew" a Los Angeles based group of studio musicians that played on most of the hits we remember growing up.
Incredible talent!
A classic country song made for square dancing. What a fun, lively performance by Mr. Glen Campbell.
I have loved this song from the first time I heard it.
Me too! I think it's very special!!!

My husband always plays Kaye Star's version. One day this came up in the slacker list and I just loved it. I want to learn to line dance now!
