C. W. McCall - Green River Lyrics
Way out in the canyons of the West, there's a wild river. The Spanish named it San Buenaventura; but we knew it as the Green
It was daylight on the river but we couldn't see the sun
And we couldn't hear our voices through the roar
But we felt the boilin' current and our blood was runnin' cold
And the gods were runnin' with us
On the day we ran the rapids of the Green
And we died a thousand times in that forty miles of hell
The longest day of life we'd ever seen
But we lived to tell the story and we know the story well
The day we ran the rapids of the Green
We were thirty-two in number when we gathered on the shore
And we headed off into the great unknown
And we ran that ragin' river all alone
Yeah, the gods were runnin' with us
On the day we ran the rapids of the Green
And we hear a thousand echoes on the mighty canyon walls
As we shouted from the waters far below
And we saw the ancient warnings and we heard the ghostly cries
Of the men who ran the river long ago
And we prayed that they were with us
On the day we ran the rapids of the Green
Now the memories are swirlin' in the eddies of our minds
But the waters of the Green are flowin' clear
And the canyon of Lodore will be a long remembered tale
To be told around the campfires through the years
Yeah, the gods were runnin' with us
On the day we ran the rapids of the Green
And we died a thousand times in that forty miles of hell
The longest day of life we'd ever seen
But we lived to tell the story and we know the story well
The day we ran the rapids of the Green

C. W. McCall Green River Comments
I was six years old when my mom and dad bought this album (I still have it), and us kids memorized every song on the album. I'll never forget doing Black Bear Road as a speech my Sophomore year of High School when the teacher asked us to present a song or poem in dramatic fashion. I did it at the same speed as the album, but had to really force myself not to say "pay no attention to the guitar there", because there was no guitar - just me reciting the song. The whole class busted up laughing the entire time, but I actually got a mediocre grade because the teacher said despite my good enunciation there was no way anyone could actually make out the story at the rate of speed I was talking. Hilarious memory, though.
me too I loved this album and still do
That's a great story. I knew this album from an 8 track tape my dad had. My cousins & I would sit out in the vehicles listening over & over. I love every song on this record and a bunch of CW's other songs too.
My daughter just ran the Green River about a month ago in an eight man canoe.
Damn and these boys did it in jeeps(?)
Sounds like The Devil Went Down to Georgia - Charle Daniels Band.
It so great listening to his songs. Way older than I am but it's impressive and way better than today's music
C.W. McCall was the Last Great American Storyteller.
what if Cw, John Denver, Johnny Horton and Johnny Cash was in a band together
This was he first album I bought as a kid, and this tune in my humble opinion was the best tune on it.

Sad to think there are 2 dumbasses out there. Probably Muslims
Aren't they usually?
"Now the memories are whirling in the eddies of our minds..."
Great imagery for a song about a scary river ride.

i have the cassette tape for the Real McCall, as well as a walkman to play it. i prefer retro over modern. and C.W. McCall is my most favorite singer.
I have it on 8 track, not that I have a method to play it.
The sound in the back ground is great. It makes you feel your there.
Yeah here's where it gets deep. I still have a unit in my garage that RECORDS 8 tracks. TAKE THAT modern technology.
Any one who wants to send a card or letter to Bill (CW McCall) his address is
