Byrds, The - Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics
Hello cowgirl in the sand
Is this place at your command
Can I stay here for awhile
Can I see your sweet sweet smile
Old enough now to change your name
It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game
Hello ruby in the dust
Has your band begun to rust
After all the sin we've had
I was hoping that we'd turn bad
Old enough now to change your name
When so many love you, is it the same
It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game
Is it not the way it seems
Purple words on a grey background
To be a woman and to be turned down
Old enough now to change your name
When so many love you, is it the same
It's the woman in you that makes you want to play this game

Byrds, The Cowgirl In The Sand Comments
I love this version.
Pretty lame--like taking a strong tranquilizer. Sounds like the harmonica player fell asleep and is snoring into it.
Then @2:39 the rest of the band falls asleep. They must have needed one more song for the album and tossed this on.
The Byrds are one of my favorite bands, but they just missed the mark on this one.
Contains the earliest Neil Young reference to 'rust' when he writes about rock 'n roll and himself: "Has your band (Buffalo Springfield) begun to rust?"
Bad remake of Neil Young's song. It sounds like they are over-pronouncing the words, as though they're reading off sheet music. The music, also, does not compare to Young's version. Love The Byrds, just not this song.
Never heard this until today (6/12/19), now I know why.
I totally agree
Thr Byrds really captured it with their version and the back-up singers made it even more beautiful.
Could have been a very good album if the other 4 Byrds had rehearsed as did Gene Clark
Love Gene Clark on this
No one could do this song better. It is truly beautiful.
Sounds like a CSN outtake .
Because they sang also on this album
Neil's version or this one? I'll take them both!
I like Neil's better. But this is good also.
You are all running a 2 outta 10 in manhood.
I'm going to listen to Neil and compare coz this sounds mushy to me.
Anybody listening to this has probably already put in thousands of hours listening to neil young
i am one of the biggest neil young fans in the world ,but gene clark and the byrds really interpreted this song in the groove it belongs.
Had this record when I was first learning how to play (1976).
More than 40 years ago!
now the country the original members put out we're all fantastic (like this album) ......... the "notorious byrd brothers" was an album sans dave crosby (because he was fired) but gene clark was in the studio for quite a long time for recording. "sweetheart of the rodeo" was a darn good composition too, I have to admit (but few original members in that one)
frizzlefrap ... Crosby was on NBB all over it!
This is tight, never heard this version before. Still prefer neil young's version, but this one is much more soothing. Both are great for different moods.
Yeah, "soothing"....like taking a strong tranquilizer. Sounds like the harmonica player fell asleep and is snoring through it.
In the early to mid 70s when I was in high school back in Texas, there were 3 or 4 songs I always played on the juke box at the local pool hall, this was one. I loved those days when country and rock were blending, back when my hair was to my shoulders but I wore pearl snap shirts, boot cut blue jeans and Tony Lamas. Good days in Texas back then as they are now....just different.
this is just a cool song. I like your telling of your memories.
i remember east TX in the late 60s as a kid
My hair is past my shoulders and I'm rocking pearl snaps and lizard skin nocona boots. Wasn't alive back then but it was probably nice.
Long hair, cowboy shirt and R.M Williams boots in Australia mate. Loved this song. i guess i haven't changed much. All the best.
wow never knew until the Byrds also did this, thanks for posting
all album-pleae arbold from finland
Rivals the original in every way. Gene's vocals are pure gold. Thanks for reminding me, pity the album was a bit of a dud.
+Anthony Monaghan - Agreed. I actually prefer it to Neil's studio original. Those harmonies! Though Neil's acoustic versions are gorgeous. Again- better than his own electric version from '69.
Yourfood1993 personally I think the original 69 was more of an emphasis on Neil's guitar, not voice. But I get what you mean
I like this version better than the original.. good memories!
While this version is good Neil's original is a rock masterpiece from "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" the Album that catapulted him into a realm where few artists ventured solo and he has stayed there with him being totally in control his music .. I'm not saying The Byrds reunion lp was lame but it is not in my opinion better than Neil's tune.. I am a Byrds fanatic and have all the vinyl and cd's they recorded but I don't have the Reunion lp..I do intend to remedy that with the cd.. Viva la Byrds..
Neil’s is a masterpiece. This is good but sorry not up to Neil Young’s standard.
great version , great arrangement , great Gene Clark lead , but not better than original Neil Young classic . in fact Everybody knows this is nowhere is top 100 Rock LP s all time
Hello ruby in the dust ....
Popular on KINK in Portland in '73. Next thing i know, I am going down an escalator in Tokyo and there is the Byrd"s LP! And NRPS. No money to speak of, but got them both!
Fond memories of KINK from the day they went on the air. Sunday Night Album Preview. We'll never see that again.
I love Gene's voice.
Gene was awesome great song writer and musician
Richie D'Onofrio I think you meant in general and on their own songs, but you do know that this song was written by Neil Young, right? His version is more electric and was from 1969
Obrigadíssimo por postar... Meu coração lacrimejou. Adoro Neil Young... Eu gostaria que meu coração e meu espírito tivessem chorado mais, pois isso é uma forma de expressar amor, quando se está sentindo tanta-tanta falta da pessoa... Viva The birds! Viva os pássaros! obrigado por tudo! Abraço...
This version is nice too....
This version is nice too....
Boy I hope you can back those words up. Gene was a running partner of mine. If I was you I'd shut the fuck up Danny.
dont u hear the voices, harmony, the feeling, music is my life, neil is good, but the the byrds were, bluegrass, country-rock, pop, rock, and did wat ever they felt........ thats called mastery
it sounds beautiful......... this is wat country boys should listen to....... im 16...... this new music dosent have soul
I live for that pause at the end...
wish that would happen to you
rock band goes country. kinda like the beatles who went country then rock....
Soo meny memorys...
Sounds like Neil Young if he was a pussy and made shit music.
danny martin better shut the hell up when you don't know shit about music
While their voices are much better than Neil's there is no way this is better than the original. There are live versions of this song that are just bonkers, amazing guitar, much more entertaining. and i while i do love the byrds it seems like all their songs were written by other people and tend to sound a lot alike all the other songs David Crosby is on ... they should just stick to Bob Dylan covers
TheHarryBalzonya ... shocking lack of knowledge about Byrds! Wrote a lot of their own music! Gene Clark wrote great great songs and tons of them!
Crosby was done & gone in a couple of lp's. The Byrds' sound was McGuinn's, whom Dylan loves to this day.
Indeed....
much better than the original
Cool cover !
@duinnerfs Another example of the way they can take someone else's song and make it sound awesome in a familiar and new way at the same time.........
Respect to the Byrds, but this doesn't come close to purveying the feeling of the Neil Young version.
@Stinger222 man, i know music is subjective, but c'mon now.
This was a super album... too bad it's not out on CD
Gene, how much we miss you!!
fantastic song .... and i don't even like country ..... go figure ..... even though this is country .... it's the BYRDS ..... WHAT CAN I SAY .... GOTTA LOVE EM', GOTTA LOVE EM'!
Best Neil Young version is undoubtedly that on "4 Way Street" (CSNY Live).
Wow -- I had no idea this cover even existed until yesterday. Very interesting, although that silence after the word "game"... I keep wanting to sing Neil's little guitar riff to fill it up.
@captainsoul1953 HAIL! HAIL! NEIL YOUNG
Wow i <3 this song
I love the Young's 4way street acoustic version...the Byrds cover is great!!! I like the harmonies and the lead vocal by Gene Clark. Beautiful song.
The Neil Young version of this song is special. However, if you listen close to the harmony in this track it is mesmerizing. I am not certain the Byrds, one of my all time favorite bands, ever sounded better in harmony.
RIP Gene.....this version is so sweet.
The most sad thing about this song is that the cd-version is nowhere near as good as the LP version. Digital remastering took the juice out of the song. This goes for the other songs too.
This song sounds better raw. Its too sweet here. Still great just not as good as Neil's electric versions.
Its a Neil Young song
Byrds can sometimes do a great job on other artist's creations . . . .
You ROCK! I was lacking this one song to re-compile the old "Superstars of the 70's" LP I loved while growing up. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
