Byrds, The - All I Really Want To Do Lyrics

I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy, or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is baby be friends with you

No, I ain't lookin' to fight with you
Frighten you or tighten you
Drag you down or drain you down
Chain you down or bring you down
All I really want to do
Is baby be friends with you

I don't want to fake you out
Take or shake or forsake you out
I ain't lookin' for you to feel like me
See like me or be like me

I don't want to meet your kin
Make you spin or do you in
Or select you or disect you
Or inspect you or reject you
All I really want to do
Is baby be friends with you

  3. A.... ....

    Love this song,love the byrds,Love the 60's Music,Way better then today's garbage

  4. J.... B....

great Dylan cover buy one CD and you'll need to get the forty others.

  5. p.... ....

    Honey boy.

  6. g.... w....

    know this feeling

  7. b.... t....

Memories...why can't you just fade away, you're haunting me with this song.

  8. I.... M....

The Byrds are the most polite kids of rock music!

  9. J.... S....

Baseline, working with that 12 string.... now that's how to weave a classic.

  10. j.... w....

Brings back happy days, and sexy 1960s girls

  11. C.... S....

The profound marriage of Dylan's words and McGuinn's 12 string Rick made us feel anything was possible.

  12. J.... D....

yeah, Alex L....it's "frighten you, or UPtighten' you"

  13. R.... B....

Pale carbon copy of Sonny and Cher’s version.

All this did was block the B side, I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better (After You’re gone) from becoming a major hit recording. Way to go, Columbia Records.

    R.... B....

Comparing the Byrds to Sonny and Cher is laughable. BTW, Gene Clark's song is I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better (WHEN You're gone) Making arguments about what should've been 'the hit single' on unhip AM radio is pointless. Nobody who was anybody cared about the top 40. I was there, we were buying long players (albums)

  14. A.... F....

    Here the original instrumental version:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9uXasa_HTs

  15. p.... ....

Cher version is of course far superior

  16. S.... D....

    the friendzone song

  17. D.... b....

I like the Cher version Better

    D.... b....

    Are u in a coma?

  18. J.... R....

    Are those guitars gorgeous ?

  19. B.... M....

All I really want to do is Call a few babes!

  20. s.... ....

Boy, that 12-string Ricky is jangling like crazy! Great song nonetheless.

  21. s.... ....

It's just unbelievably what they did with the original - took flat country song and filled it with harmonies that made the song shining.

  22. E.... B....

    Love their version.

  23. G.... C....

Another one of the great hits written by Bob Dylan and sung by The Byrds defines the meaning of true classic rock!

  24. b.... t....

Bob Dylan composed it, and The Byrds interprete it the way the people wants it.

    b.... t....

Dylan composed his own version....he didn't compose this

    b.... t....

@Pablo Cruz I never said he didn't....but the byrds put their own spin on it

  25. d.... ....

Just smoothin' out Dylan's raspy voice

  26. R.... M....

the people who hit thumbs down are either dyslectic or they like the Monkees

  27. d.... ....

    My favorite Bryds song

  28. D.... D....

Roger McGuinn the master of the Twelve String Electric Rickenbacker

  29. A.... G....

Not as good as Cher's version but I still like it.

  30. f.... ....

I like it, but I think I like Cher's version better

  31. j.... f....

Must be the most Beautiful Guitar sound I've ever heard on this version of AIRWTD!

  32. F.... R....

    Don't you just love this:)

  33. j.... f....

Sonny of S&C nicked this from the Byrds when they used to play Ciros in W Hollywood! The bridge in the middle was a Roger McGuinn creation! And Cher version copies it to a tee!

  34. D.... W....

"No I ain't lookin' to fight with you; frighten you or UPTIGHTEN you" (Dylan actually made up the word derived from uptight - a very commonly used word in the 60's)

  35. D.... W....

btw, that's the second verse. Shame too, all the other lyrics are correct.

  36. D.... W....

or UPtighten you is the lyric you missed not tighten you

  37. c.... f....

I agree........ The Byrds ROCK! ;-)<3<3<3

  38. B.... B....

I look up to these guys as a huge influence and would love to bring this kind of music back into the world for today's generation. I think the meaning and power of the message is still relevant to today's youth of the nation.

  39. E.... R....

    great Dylan cover!

  40. j.... w....

It is all about being friends, before you're ever lovers.

    j.... w....

That’s what it means to you. Keep it real Hoss

  41. j.... s....

thanks Roger for that beautiful 12 string

    j.... s....

Roger he added a compressor in the 60s to the Rick that’s why it rings better than normal ricks

  42. 1.... ....

    this version is annoying asf

  43. E.... S....

god this is soooooooooooooo long ago and still so relevant.

  44. S.... T....

I like the byrds version the best

    S.... T....

I like it a lot better than the Sonny and Cher version. But then I just like the early Byrds sound.

  45. j.... s....

a song i could have written if i had that talent. felt like this more than once

    j.... s....

Keep writing. Come up with songs. Play them to me and lets collaborate and lets get them recorded!

    j.... s....

have some old poems, that is all. occasionally i will hear a song that i put my own lyrics to, but that is it

    j.... s....

@jennifur sun So sing along with your lyrics and lets get some songs going.

    j.... s....

What kind of poems have you got? Would love to see/read/hear them :)

    j.... s....

all kinds. sadly i misplaced my fav one. i can post one here if no one objects

  46. B.... J....

    ty segall sent me here

  47. M.... T....

Women need to be told? Been married 30 years.....good luck with that approach.....women need to be loved

    M.... T....

Or in the poor house 😎

  48. A.... M....

My favorite version of this song was definitely by the BYRDS.......

  49. b.... ....

Gee... crucify you I don't know about that but the the rack sounds good and panties could be optional.

    b.... ....

+blueticecho Track sounds great and panties are always optional!

    b.... ....

    @Ellen Hilts-Gossett
Yeah  kid indeed they are.. Ha

  50. A.... A....

es mi mejor record de the birds

  51. k.... b....

    Who's singing lead vocals?

    k.... b....

    Roger McGuinn

    k.... b....

yep. Roger Mcguinn. the greatest vocalist maybe ever?

    k.... b....

McGuinn sang the lead,Crosby the top harmony

  52. J.... ....

Hard to believe this was recorded 50 YEARS AGO.  Still sounds great.  Long live the Byrds!

    J.... ....

such a powerful sound...........12 string heaven

    J.... ....

    @brainsareus
That jangly 12-string had me from the first five notes I ever heard when mr. Tambourine Man was released in 1965 . I never got over the love of that sound. I would graduate high school in 6 months. During the last half of my senior year so much great music came out it was shocking☢☣⚠️❗❕❗
Oh crap this just in. After my last punctuation immediately above I Googled what I thought was going to be the song King of the Hill and instead got the Animated Series and was astonished that Tom Petty voiced a character on there for 5 years. I don't do cable so I never watched it but you'd have to be suffering from bovine spongiform encephalopathy to at least not have HEARD of the "cartoon" King of the Hill. Damn, 71and I can still learn something new, hot damn !

    J.... ....

Anybody happen to know if the cartoon series King of the Hill is in any way connected with the content of the song King of the Hill by Tom Petty and Rodger McGuinn? I just (10 minutes ago) discovered that Tom Petty voiced a character on there for five freaking years. I never watched it but popular culture has a way of sneaking into your consciousness through osmosis, whether you want it to or not, so I had heard of the King of the Hill cartoon series.

  53. G.... D....

i just want to get into your pants

  54. J.... W....

A long time ago I used these lyrics to try to approach a girl I liked. She never spoke to me ever. Maybe she didn't get it? I liked Bob Dylan's version but I love this cover.

    J.... W....

I never liked the BeeGees, but I like your enthusiasm for musical references. I think literary and musical references are spot on!

    J.... W....

@Ellen Hilts-Gossett I live at an airport that has been pretty much abandoned. During WW II a WW I fighter ace by the name of Billy Bishop landed there and visited our little town.  I am writing a 3 act musical play using him as a backdrop but the story is mainly about the folks and the stories they had to tell. I love to write, and really love music.

    J.... W....

I do too! I'm a journalist by trade, and a music enthusiast by choice!

    J.... W....

    journalism aint no trade sugar

    J.... W....

And you "ain't" no gentleman... jackass.

It's not that simple; it's debatable. Do some Googling.

    No hate. Peace.

  55. M.... E....

The 12 string guitar and Roger Mcguinns vocals are so awesome and distinctive. The harmony vocals as well. One of the best bands.

    M.... E....

McGuinn's rick never sounded any wilder than it does in this track...unforgottable band, one of the very important bands of my early days

    M.... E....

so want one day is to touch and hear that guitar in person. my second fav sounding guitar I have ever heard.

    M.... E....

@ginny white telecaster would come first in the list

    M.... E....

@ENAMORAO DE MI TELECA my personal fav, which I think is a Telly, is the guitar that belonged to the late Clarence White, now owned by Marty Stuart

  56. f.... ....

    sublime

  57. T.... C....

They brought Dylan to the Mainstream.  Is that so bad?

    T.... C....

@Terry Corcoran I don't think so. Their version is my favorite!

    T.... C....

Terry Corcoran. They are one of the most influential bands of all time.

  58. C.... O....

god that chorus harmony is SO AMAZING!!

  59. B.... L....

    kewlest

  60. s.... ....

On this day in 1965 {June 27th} two versions of "All I Really Want To Do" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the Byrd's version at #86 and Cher's version charted three position lower at #86...
And both versions also peaked on the same week; on August 15th, 1965 Cher peaked at #15 {for 2 weeks}; while the Byrds reached #40 {for 1 week}...
The Byrd's version was sandwiched between two #1 records by the group; "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!"...

    s.... ....

thankyou for your wonderful information sauquoit13456

  61. A.... G....

The Byrds had a sound all of their own. They were really good. They made Dylan's sound completely different.

  62. m.... ....

I like the Byrds' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" better than Dylan's, perhaps because I was familiar with it long before I heard Dylan sing it.  But this....this is a bit hokey imho.  I'll take Dylan's version all day.

  63. a.... ....

so many single people and so many looking for someone- just let it be. this is the way it should be. simple. just care and be friends and help each other. two way street.

    a.... ....

@Sunil Chopra thank you. being friends is the right way to go. if love it meant to be it will come. even great distances are small with email, and texting. and those distances do not matter in being friends. do they? why should it matter if you are writing and stuff. if it is meant to be more then the distance will close. the greatest love in my life (passed away now) began as my friend. She remained my friend all the time, but became even more. A true friend is the greatest treasure. write again. [email protected]. thanks for writing. bob
