Buggles, The - Living In The Plastic Age Lyrics

Every day my metal friend
Shakes my bed at 6 AM
Then the shiny serving clones
Run in with my telephones

Talking fast I make a deal
Buy the fake and sell what's real
Ah, what's this pain here in my chest?
Maybe I should take a rest

They send the heart police
To put you under cardiac arrest
And as they drag you the door
They tell you that you've failed the test

(Living in the)
Living in the Plastic Age
Looking only half my age
Hello, doctor, lift my face
I wish my skin could stand the pace

In the bed I read my mind
Remember how the mice were blind
I watch them fighting in their cage
Could this be the Plastic Age?

They send the heart police
To put you under cardiac arrest
And as they drag you through the door
They tell you that you've failed the test

(Living in the)
Plastic Age
Plastic Age
Plastic Age

They send the heart police
To put you under cardiac arrest
And as they drag you the door
They tell you that you've failed the test

(Living in the)

Plastic Age
Plastic Age

Buggles, The Living In The Plastic Age Comments
  1. J.... L....

    Most excellent, thanks! :-)

  2. D.... J....

Amazing. I've never seen this video so clearly.

    D.... J....

@ Douglas Johnson: Yeah, it turned out really well this one, even if I do say so myself... :-)

  3. z.... ....

This song makes even more sense now

  4. .... ....

    流石に日本人はいないかな?

    いい曲は何年経ってもいいわー
    生まれてないけど笑

  5. G.... W....

Did Tim Burton direct EVERYTHING back then?!?!?!

  6. S.... B....

I never noticed the obvious Kraftwerk influence till now. Great song either way!

  7. m.... ....

Nice job of editing the video to fit the full-length version of the song!

    m.... ....

@ macsnafu: Cheers mate, glad you appreciated it and enjoyed it... :-)

  8. A.... G....

    3:14 - 3:24 best Part <33

  9. T.... ....

    Geoff is fabulous

  10. I.... N....

This sounds like the opening track to a rock space opera that never happened

    I.... N....

    Great comment!

  11. S.... S....

    Nobody:
2:52 Trevor Horn on a floating disc:

    S.... S....

    Jajajaja

  12. P.... ....

God, I really miss the Buggles. Really great music. Why didn't they continue?

    P.... ....

They formed into the band "Yes" which disbanded in 1981

    P.... ....

@Metal Star Productions thanks! A bit of a shame really. Hope they will come together someday. 🤞

    P.... ....

@Pincer88 but hey trevor horn still collaborates with Geoff and performs once in a while

    P.... ....

Geoff is still with Yes as their keyboardist, and Trevor went on to be an absurdly successful producer.

Also, back in 2011, Yes made an album called Fly From Here, which Trevor produced. The 20-minute title track is actually an old unreleased Buggles song that they expanded upon. Back in 2018 they remade the album with Trevor on vocals, so it's essentially the closest we've gotten to a new Buggles album.

  13. i.... ....

Well, I don't know about living in the Plastic Age, but we've had over the Eons of Time amongst others, the Stone Age, Iron Age, Bronze Age, Ice Age and Prehistoric Age and Now We're definitely living in the MENTAL AGE :-(

  14. c.... ....

Once Trevor sings the main hook I can understand why he was asked to sing for Yes

  15. S.... P....

    Trevor Horn was a genius!

  16. N.... C....

    Great quality!

  17. B.... V....

The chorus sounds like the band YES.

    B.... V....

Trevor actually sang for Yes later on.

    B.... V....

"The bizarre turn of events came about after Yes lead singer Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman quit the group in 1979, leaving bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Alan White down two key group members. They happened to share a manager with the Buggles, who decided the best course of events was to simply merge his two acts into one. After all, Trevor Horn had a voice not wildly dissimilar from Jon Anderson’s, and his songwriting and producing chops would be a big asset to Yes. Geoff Downes was also a very talented keyboardist who could easily handle the elaborate parts of his predecessors."

  18. F.... J....

    Thanks. Great song.

    F.... J....

@ Francisco Javier Ruiz: You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it... :-)

  19. J.... T....

    Fantastic,my favourite Buggles song

  20. S.... F....

Obviously they identified the issue with single use plastics before all the scientists. 🤪

    S.... F....

Stephen Forster: Nah, you picked it up all wrong... The song has nothing to do with todays issue of plastics and the problems they cause the environment...

The song as Trevor Horn once explained himself is about living in a time when we went from things made out of wood, steel etc.. to them being now made in mass production out of cheap plastic that everyone could afford even if they where "fake/ imitations" of the real thing. Along with the obsession of some to try and remain looking youthful with plastic surgery. Basically it's about the sudden change that happened in the 70's where plastic became the new material that changed consumers lives with the availability of mass produced cheap/ fake products, back then plastic wasn't even considered an environmental issue... ;-)

  21. j.... ....

    LOVED the album!

  22. c.... ....

    Fabulous I love it.

  23. P.... A....

LOVE!! Such good sound quality! I sure miss the talent back then!

  24. K.... N....

    The Buggles = Yes "Drama"...
Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes 👍👍👍
    Good quality video... Thank you.

  25. H.... 1....

    THANK YOU 🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    H.... 1....

@ Heidi 123: You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it... :-)

  26. H.... ....

Loved 'Video,'Elstree and this, was big into The Art of Noise and Propaganda the whole ZTT thang at the time!
    Where has it gone?

    H.... ....

Elstree, one of my FAVOURITES. Geoff Downes keyboard wizardry was brilliant with Horns production. I loved the 80's

  27. a.... p....

Infinitely better than the entire output of Maroon 5.

  28. s.... ....

I remember seeing them perform plastic age on Get it Together, in the afternoon, so I must have bunked off of school.

  29. N.... E....

"Clean Clean" and "Johnny on the Monorail" coulda shoulda been hits too... and as for Elstree....!! PERFECT QUALITY VID...!! XXXX

  30. D.... C....

Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes....awesome. Geoff went to do Asia of course

  31. C.... :....

*Hey look man, i found raw footage of the future left behind by some future dude,*
*_It has the Buggles running from frickin' Space Invaders,_*

    C.... :....

I've still got that version of Space Invaders on a cassette tape for the Spectrum ZX+2.

    C.... :....

    @Andy JS Nice.

    C.... :....

@Classickid : Retro game player I'll have to see if I can get the computer working again sometime. You need the right type of TV to link it up to of course, with an old-fashioned aerial.

    C.... :....

@Andy JS OK. Is the Speccy (people called it that right?) your favorite retro computer?

  32. A.... J....

This was the follow-up single to Video Killed The Radio Star. Strange it didn't do better in the charts.

    A.... J....

@ Andy JS: Yup I preferred this one over Video Killed The Radio Star (a good as that is) but this one for me was their best, still got the original single to this very day... :-)

    A.... J....

@MadFranko008 Ridiculous to see a snowflake in the comments section getting offended by alleged "blackface" in this video.

    A.... J....

Because it was way to layered and complex for the mainstream ears... who are pleased with some square dance lead shoe music...

    A.... J....

@ Andy JS: This is YouTube/ social media after all, the voice-box of the brain dead PC brigade who shed their crocodile tears, feign offence & mock outrage at things only they imagine they see or hear in their warped attention seeking little minds... ;-)

I'll never understand why they are oh so eager to make complete arseholes out of themselves in public though, but hey, tis their choice and personally I always find them good for ripping the piss out of as they deserve... ;-)

  33. M.... M....

Thought I saw Lady Gaga then! Must of been seeing things.

  34. p.... b....

always liked the buggles this is there very best

  35. L.... T....

    1:49 ... Yes that happened.

    L.... T....

@ Leneco That one guy: Erm... you're the one keeping it going as you keep on replying here !!! not quite got a grasp on life and how things actaully work yet have you !!! :-o

    L.... T....

What on earth are you talking about?

    L.... T....

    It was a simpler time.

    L.... T....

@ Average British Guy: True but unlike today where it is in fact as this thread proves it's the people that are simpler a LOT dolly dimpler... ;-)

    L.... T....

@Average British Guy People are more simple today in my opinion, in terms of simpler meaning more stupid.

  36. M.... J....

This was a big hit in the 80s. I saw this vid then. This has been enhanced and looks brand new. Top quality. Kudos to you.

    M.... J....

@ MARIA JACKSON: Cheers, glad you enjoyed this cleaned up version... :-)

It's amazing what you can these days with a wee bit of time and effort to clean up these classic old videos, hardest part though is finding a half decent copy to begin with... :-)

    M.... J....

@MadFranko008 Really? Because I always thought finding 80s vids in relatively good/decent condition wouldn't be too difficult, due to the fact that the 80s was the decade of MTV and music videos. Guess I was wrong LOL. Great job anyway .

    M.... J....

@ MARIA JACKSON: You might think finding them in good condition would be easy due ti the sheer numbers of videos that there where but sadly it aint... :-/

Most videos are on worn out old master tapes that the production companies be it TV or in the music industry don't bother to clean up at all (which is easy to do with todays digital technology), they just transmit them in their worn out quality or bung them on DVD's in the same worn out condition, then rip you off by charging you 15 or 20 for the DVD which has some grainy old worn out clips on it... :-/

Dunno why they don'y clean them up, cos if I can do then they surely can. I guess they know they can get away with it as if it's all there is that's available then people will buy them I suppose (or come here and "borrow" decent quality vids)... ;-)

  37. D.... D....

Never heard this before. Sounds like it would have worked on Drama, too. The video quality is phenomenal. Looks like they shot this last week.

    D.... D....

@ Doug Drazga: The video quality is only like this after I spent many hours cleaning it up as the original like most videos from that era which are left wasn't exactly the best of quality... ;-)

    D.... D....

You have done a phenomenal job MadFrank! This and a couple of the Ultravox tracks are amongst my all-time favourites, most of which are from the 80s, a million times better than the so-called 'music' we have these days. Many thanks!

    D.... D....

Cheers Chris, you're welcome and I'm glad you appreciated the effort... :-)

  38. N.... E....

BRILLIANT.....!!!!! Great work with the video..back to its full glory... Can u believe this never made the top 10....?????????????? Travesty

    N.... E....

@MadFranko008 Yup.. as they say.. "you can a horse to water but u cant make him drink it" but u done a fab job..! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!! X

    N.... E....

Didn't make the top 10!? Everyone I knew loved it! Strange indeed.

    N.... E....

    @MARIA JACKSON taste eh?? x

    N.... E....

@Nick EspositoExactly! Actually a good few established bands that were unique started to go commercial for the money, I can't blame them, except they lost their unique sound and style.

    N.... E....

    @MARIA JACKSON xxx

  39. P.... B....

Some bands are just way before their time, and some are always
in the right time when ever it is…
    classic band..

    P.... B....

Depeche Mode "Photografie picture" is explaining Facebook in1983.
Blue Hotel from Lena lovich 1983 schowed The Handy Generation.
Fun Boy Three 1983 explains the katastroph at love Parade 2010 in the song "in the tunnel of love" !
And Walt Disney found 1936 the idea Smartphone.See at "popey goes to army" from 1936!

    P.... B....

    @ Michael Walter: Erm...
Quote "Depeche Mode "Photografie picture" is explaining Facebook in1983."
    ... Nope !!!

Quote "Blue Hotel from Lena lovich 1983 schowed The Handy Generation."
... "The Handy Generation" !!! is that something you made up yourself !!! :-o

Quote "Fun Boy Three 1983 explains the katastroph at love Parade 2010 in the song "in the tunnel of love" !"
... WHAT !!! never heard of it (the love parade that is) but NOPE anyway...

Quote "And Walt Disney found 1936 the idea Smartphone.See at "popey goes to army" from 1936!"
ROFLMAO... so showing some pictures from a photo album is in your mind setting the concept of a "smart phone" !!! in that case my great grannie (and probably everyone else's) came up with that concept then... ;-)

  40. C.... J....

Jeff Downes in Marigold gloves, come on now...

  41. P.... W....

    80's didn't give a fark bout blackface

    P.... W....

PIGGY WIGGY ~ This was one toe barely in the 80s. The album was recorded in '79, released January '80.

    P.... W....

Yeah that's racist 😑 but their music is still cool

    P.... W....

@Mr. Noah Gwin No it isn't racist.

    P.... W....

The video for Fade To Grey by Visage also has people with painted faces of different colours and black/grey.

    P.... W....

I don't think that's blackface since the people were painted completely black and didn't try to imitate people of colour

  42. s.... s....

contender for best 80s album just superb.

  44. W.... R....

plastic age, these guys knew something back then, that plastic not good

    W.... R....

@ Western Ranger: Without plastic you wouldn't be sitting at a computer or mobile phone (whatever your are using) right now to watch this and type your message, no to mention the countless other things we take for granted in this modern life that are made out of plastic... ;-)

So are you going to give up all those things if you think that plastic is not good ??? :-o

    W.... R....

@MadFranko008 maybe ,but the damage its doing to marine life in the oceans is going to be catastrophic (stick to my original quote plastic not good coz it breaks down into microscopic particles which is ingested by all marine animals),but saying that ,if the plastic wasn't dumped in the oceans there wouldn't be a problem, plus ironically the songs medium is vinyl

    W.... R....

@ Western Ranger: I get what you are saying but that's not the fault if the actual plastic, it's the fault of humans and the careless way they dispose of it...

Plastic has been around for a very long time now and like it or not most things we use rely on it and it isn't going away anytime soon, in fact just the opposite it is and will be used increasingly more especially now with the advent of 3D printers that are in ever increasing use in industry and by individuals...

If we got rid of all the things that damage the environment then unfortunately the very fabric of our society and everyday living would fall apart as all those things that do damage it from plastics and oils to the toxic chemicals used in electronics have nothing to replace them at this point in time...

Not much of a choice really, continue to use such things so that the likes of you and I have those very electronic devices which ironically we are using here to have this conversation or get rid of them all and go back to the the old ways, which we can't as we have painted ourselves into a corner as a species and the very fabric of modern society depends on those things and there are no plans let alone options anymore to go back...

Just in the same way as the modern world relies entirely on the internet for every aspect of business and if the internet ever goes down we are all stuffed as not one government on this planet has a back up plan for when it does happen and one day it will be it caused by natural disaster or a cyber terrorist attack...

The modern world has doomed itself and that aint gonna change in yours or my lifetime and as industry rules the economy and people want more and more cheap affordable goods and foodstuffs in increasing volumes then industry will use even more of all those things that damage the environment to make and supply them to you, I and everyone else...

You can be sure of one thing, most people (even those that pay lip service to the damage done to the environment) aint gonna give up their modern gadget filled, plastic wrapped cheap food and drinks to save themselves or the environment no matter how much they may complain about the damage it all costs the environment, cos most people at the end of the day really only care about themselves and having a cushy life and when push comes to shove most aint gonna give that up... :-/

  49. E.... W....

You sir, like Trevor Horn, is a GENIUS!! Well done!! I applaud you!

    E.... W....

@ Eskie Wolf: Cheers & thank you but "genius" is overstating things a wee bit, I'm just a fan whom thought the full length version of the song needed a video to go along with it, hopefully it turned out not too bad in the end... :-)

    E.... W....

In all honesty, THIS should've been on MTV!

  50. B.... ....

Before Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and Mystery Science Theater 3000 but during Doctor Who

  51. M.... W....

    Fantastic!!!

  52. N.... V....

Oh My God! ... Wow this is a real treat! ... this single blew me away in 1980. For me this was the Buggle's best ... Trevor should be a Sir.

Hi Mr Gedwood... Kinda thought you'd appreciate this one & thanks for the compliment... :-)

I think I've got "Clean Clean" somewhere in the old VHS archives or even on DVD somewhere but haven't got round to clean cleaning it up yet, if I come across it during one of searches through the archives (old cardboard boxes stuffed with VHS tapes and DVD) then I'll get round to uploading it at some point... :-)

At Last! - Thanks for putting the work in to this and posting it up. Not seen it before and like Trevor and Geoff's work as the Buggles.

    c.... ....

@ citroenman: Cheers mate and of course you're welcome... :-)

Took a fair bit to edit it to the full length of the single which is 5 minutes 10 seconds and the original promo video was only 3 minutes 47 seconds, still it worked out not too bad in the end and I'm quite pleased with one... :-)

    c.... ....

So you should be - Keep up the good work.
