Buddy Holly - Brown Eyed Handsome Man Lyrics

Oh arrested on charges of unemployment
He was sitting in the witness stand
The judge's wife called up the district attorney
Said you free that brown eyed man
You want your job you better free
That brown eyed man

Flying across the desert in a TWA,
I saw a woman walking across the sand
She'd been a-walkin' thirty miles en route to Bombay
To meet a brown eyed handsome man
Her destination was a brown eyed handsome man

Way back in history three thousand years
In fact ever since the world began
There's been a whole lot of good women shedding tears
Over a brown eyed handsome man
A lot of trouble with a brown eyed handsome man

Well a beautiful a daughter couldn't make up her mind
Between a doctor and a lawyer man
Her mother told her, "Darlin' go out and find yourself
A brown eyed handsome man
That's what your daddy is a brown eyed handsome man"

Well the Milo de Venus was a beautiful lass
She had the world in the palm of her hand
But she lost both her arms in a wrestling match
To win a brown eyed handsome man
She fought and won herself a brown eyed handsome man

Well-a two, three the count with nobody on
He hit a high fly into the stands
A-rounding third he was a-heading for home
It was a brown eyed handsome man
That won the game it was a brown eyed handsome man

    Buddy Holly Lives On!!

  6. 1.... ....

    Buddy holly lives ....forever ...

  7. O.... ....

Buddy Holly at his age wrote better songs than the Beatles, or even Dylan or anybody else save Mozart or Scott Joplin or scant few other heavyweights. There is no telling what he could have accomplished during the 60's, 70's and 80's if he had've lived that plane crash. What a talent!

  8. J.... J....

    This is the sound !

This song was recorded in Norman Petty's studio as a demo cut. Buddy Holly was still under contract for a Nashville studio where he had been recording earlier. He was waiting for his contract to run-out before he'd start recording for Petty's studio. This song was released after Holly's death when in the studio it was over-dubbed with the Fireballs as studio musicians. It's a fantastic song because Buddy Holly brought a Chuck Berry tune to life. This song definitely is cool & Rocks.

  56. G.... G....

No es de Chuck Berry esta cancion?.

  57. D.... ....

Since Buddy died in a plane crash in 58.How did he manage to record it in 63 ??? Unless it was a copy off Buddy's 57 cover .Six years later in the UK??? I know UK print outs are a little behind American pressings. But 6 years seems quite a stretch.Maybe it was (as called in the industry)A Re-release off the original on aUK Label by permission.Or a sub-studio artist,by permission making a cover of a copy of a cover ?????

  58. C.... ....

0:54 sounds like the opening of The Doors Break on through to the other side

    C.... ....

It sounds more like Tequila to me.

  59. L.... P....

    Buddy Holly, The one

  60. J.... W....

legend has it that Berry's original lyric/title was Brown Skinned Handsome Man... but the record companies and radio stations were having none of that. Brilliant song, whoever does it.

  61. s.... f....

Chuck Berry did this song before Buddy Holly.I must admit i like this version more.

  62. M.... Q....

  78. M.... P....

The Fireballs did the backing honours on this track..
manager, Norman Petty, recorded his own versions of the last six Holly originals including Brown eyed Handsome Man in 1964, using his own studio facilities and backup group, The Fireballs.

  79. s.... ....

Chuck & Buddy . ♥ RIP Love always. Im 8 years old all over again . Right now this minute. Maybe forever ...somewhere inside. That wonderfulness and beautiful basic cut -to-the chase youth and freedom and that ameriKan soul . Moves ya.

  80. d.... ....

This version is jammin too. I guess Chuck Berry fail proofed the song.

  81. P.... D....

  82. T.... O....

  83. S.... M....

I like the Waylon Jennings version best.

  84. s.... f....

Great artist.Great talent such a sad loss at a early age.

  85. M.... C....

Chuck Berry wanted to call it 'Brown Skinned Handsome Man' but that didn't fly back then!

  86. C.... F....

Woohoo this actually topped the Chuck Berry version!

    C.... F....

Chuck Berry invented Rock n roll

    C.... F....

Uh, no, it doesn't. The original grooves and pulses; this is like a garage version.

  87. T.... V....

Man it great listening to genius on this level.

  88. d.... ....

I remember this song. It was a Top 20 Hit here in Germany in 1963.

  89. j.... f....

    This was his last song.

  90. J.... L....

    Great photos, thanks.

  91. P.... B....

I've still got my copy of the single which I bought in Nairobi, Kenya in the 60's

  92. F.... P....

Excellent interpretation of CB's excellent original.

  93. F.... P....

Does this version have a dubbed in second guitar not in the original? I don't mean Chuck's.

  94. J.... B....

Buddy Inspired Me all those years ago and iIstill do a tribute to him alongeside my Big O. tribute in the north west of the UK

    J.... B....

Love Buddy Holly and Rob Orbison (the Big O}! Both are from here in West Texas. I have lived in Lubbock all my life; I was 9 when Buddy died. He and his family members are buried very close to my family members.

  95. F.... R....

Im a Buddy Holly fan, but Chuck Berry did it best. This is weaker and watered down like most of the white imitators renditions of the black originators. This song was even ABOUT being non-white in a White society. About how even tho they were denied rights in this country, white WOMEN still love BLACK n BROWN MEN. "Arrested on charges of unemployment" was a clever line describing the corrupt justice system against ppl of color. But notice the Judges wife made the call to free him!

    F.... R....

You have to appreciate that Chuck Berry wanted to be a country and western singer. But the society wouldn't accept a black man singing that style at that time. I think Charlie Pride broke that barrier. Anyhow, if you listen to Chuck Berry doing BEHM, it has a country sound to it, more acoustic. Even Berry's voice has a twangy country sound to it. Remember, at the time, country and western was more popular than Rock and Roll. Berry made his fortune anyhow. Buddy Holly was always a Rock and Roll musician so his version of BEHM is jumped up and more electric sound.

    F.... R....

Buddy Holly first started singing country western music. Then switched to rock-a-billy. Buddy's music eventually evolved into rock 'n roll. Some also claim the background music and guitar work was overdubbed by The Fireballs in 1983. : )

    F.... R....

Maybe Chuck heard this on the radio in his prison cell.

    F.... R....

Nige Hood Waylon does this song better than anybody who's walked this earth no matter who wrote it!

    F.... R....

it is a tribute to chuck berry but with all due respect to all his fellow rockers buddy had more sides to his music then any other. the way the beatles could do rock n roll they could also do falling in love again. so buddy is the best from that time and maybe all time

  96. N.... v....

supposedly the last song he ever sang.

  97. S.... W....

buddy was great. think of those who got to enjoy him

  98. T.... ....

Best version yet nicely done and unbeatable.
