Buckley, Tim - Once I Was Lyrics

Once I was a soldier
And I fought on foreign sands for you
Once I was a hunter
And I brought home fresh meat for you
Once I was a lover
And I searched behind your eyes for you
And soon there'll be another
To tell you I was just a lie

And sometimes I wonder
Just for a while
Will you remember me

And though you have forgotten
All of our rubbish dreams
I find myself searching
Through the ashes of our ruins
For the days when we smiled
And the hours that ran wild
With the magic of our eyes
And the silence of our words

And sometimes I wonder
Just for a while
Will you remember me

I'm reading Galadrielle Allman's book, "Please Be With Me: A Song For My Father, Duane Allman," and I just read where early after meeting Donna - his wife and Galadrielle's mother, he played and sang this song to her. I had to come listen to it because it's just been far too long since I went back to this place in my heart and in my memories. <3

  13. C.... A....

Music is amazing. How can someone who died in 1975, many years before I was born can make feel so many emotions today. Impressive.

Never heard of Tim Buckley until this year and totally got a little freaked out with the first line of this song. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a singer/songwriter and one of my songs started out the exact same way but it was "Once I knew a soldier" instead. Idk thought I'd share 👐.

Once I was a soldier who came home and lived the rest of my life feeling this song.

@Jack Wilson jack Wilson did Eric put you up to this. He's a cheeky bastard. Very original tell him that he was a coward and that's why he ran when there was fighting that other men had done. He will understand and tell him I still think he's a good for nothing yank. Cheers all the best to you.

    B.... G....

@Jack Wilson No harm meant jack. I do have an eccentric friend who thinks it's funny to take the piss time and time again. My apologies Jack if your ever in Dingwall Scotland come buy and we will have a whiskey. I once knew a jack 59 years ago good chap real gentleman. All the best Jack cheers.

This is a beauty. Dam God all the fucking wars!!!!!!!

When you haven't heard this song for a while, it hits you right in the chest and the soul. He was 20 when this came out. Compare this with what people that age, and much older - Sheeran, Bieber, Cyrus, et al - are coming out with right now. When did it all become so shallow?

  27. P.... E....

I fell in love with this man when I was 1r years old. I wept when he passed. I listen to him now and feel the same intense stirring in my heart. I am 67 now and feel my heart of 16.

  28. W.... T....

    I love this song

  29. V.... V....

I heard this song for the first time in the movie Coming Home with Jon Voight. In the film, John played a quadriplegic and this song played as he talked to a room full of young men who were bound for Vietnam. The song haunted me for years but I didn't know who it was and didn't know how to find out back then in the 70s. Such an exquisite song. Bless Tim and Jeff.

Not until Florence and the Machine has there been another poet songwriter with a voice like Tim's. It took many years.

  37. T.... J....

Underrated performer. A very haunting but beautiful song.

  38. M.... P....

Triste storia di questo grande cantautore americano morto a 27 anni in circostanze misteriose stessa sorte è toccata al figlio Jeff Buckley morto anche lui a 27 anni per un annegamento

  85. S.... L....

    SO tender

  86. S.... M....

Thanks for posting this. A lot of the comments are about the first time we discovered this song. Mine is a bit different. I first learned of this song as a poem. My much older brother took a class from Herman Hogan at Guelph University in which he used compilations created by the professor, called "Poetry of Relevance." He left those at our parents' house when he went back the next year and I found them. I now have a nearly 50 year appreciation of Tim Buckley, Phil Ochs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and many others, as a result. When I first heard the song in "Coming Home" it was even better than I expected. What a talent.

  87. B.... M....

Pure poetry! The older I get, the more this song makes sense to me. One of my favorite songs

  88. G.... F....

    Advanced in 67 and now

  93. K.... C....

Takes me so far away every time. Such a strong song.

  94. D.... ....

This song remembers me of when I was in traveling alone in Portugal three years ago. I was searching for myself and the meaning of life, both Buckley's helped me in this spiritual enlightenment. I decided there and then that I couldn't be the person I was, I still think this some days... Even tough i might have reached 22 years old. I still feel trapped in a numb purgatory where only music can make me feel, where people seem so banal that I only find strength in myself. "Stay strong, just listen to Buckley. Everything will be okay."

  95. T.... J....

I love this song..And Tim Buckley..From the soundtrack of one of my all time favorites,' Coming Home '.

  96. B.... B....
