Cute song. Naive, but cute. It's easy to believe most people are good when you live a cush life... believing that most people are good is a luxury of those who are sheltered.

I'm not sheltered Andi know that most people are good. I was raised in the poorest white neighborhood in my town, yeah back in the seventies our neighborhoods were segregated. I lived in the neighborhood where the wealthier pedophiles and perverts would come try to pick up kids. I lived in the neighborhood where people who didn't love there would run red lights for fear that we'd steal their tires before the light changed. I'm not kidding. I saw some of the most horrible things a child could see. At 4 years old I walked in on a murder. I saw that man shot and killed. I know we humans are capable of. Most of us are good.

This is my lyric by lyric analysis of this song after seeing that a lot of people, especially in the top comment chains of this video, don't seem to get it. I only explain the chorus and the repeating phrase "I believe most people are good" once, because reading that over and over again would get old.


"I believe kids oughta stay kids as long as they can. Turn off the screen, go climb a tree, get dirt on their hands"
This verse explains how kids should keep their innocence for as long as possible.

"I believe we gotta forgive and make amends, 'cause nobody gets a second chance to make new old friends"
This line corresponds with the lines above. We don't have a second chance to make friends that we've known for most of our lives, so we need to make them while we can.

"I believe in working hard for what you've got, even if it don't add up to a hell of a lot"
Working hard even if it doesn't add up to a lot doesn't necessarily mean the work is fruitless. If you can get enough money to get you and your family a decent life then nothing matters except for the time you spend with them and others. Rich people aren't necessarily happy people.
