Bruce Springsteen - Walk Like A Man Lyrics

I remember how rough your hand felt on mine
On my wedding day
And the tears cried on my shoulder
I couldn't turn away
Well so much has happened to me
That I don't understand
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your footprints in the sand
Trying to walk like a man

By Our Lady of the Roses
We lived in the shadow of the elms
I remember ma draggin' me and my sister up the street to the church
Whenever she heard those wedding bells
Well would they ever look so happy again
The handsome groom and his bride
As they stepped into that long black limousine
For their mystery ride
Well tonight you step away from me
And alone at the altar I stand
And as I watch my bride coming down the aisle I pray
For the strength to walk like a man

Well now the years have gone and I've grown
From that seed you've sown
But I didn't think there'd be so many steps
I'd have to learn on my own
Well I was young and I didn't know what to do
When I saw your best steps stolen away from you
Now I'll do what I can
I'll walk like a man
And I'll keep on walkin'

  3. T.... H....

Nice song, except that it cuts my heart out with a dull knife.

  4. A.... H....

This is such a moving song, it just touches everything about the father and son relationship.
My father worked in the shipyards as a riveter, he had the hands of a hard working bloke, every time I hear that opening line it gets me.
It’s such a well produced album too.

  5. M.... ....

Was low key hoping this was the Rick Springfield song mislabeled :D

  6. K.... D....

My favourite song from my favourite bruce springsteen album how i wished i had played this song for my when he was alive.

  7. c.... ....

One of his great songs, seems underrated. The imagery is spectacular a song about hopes and dreams falling short and how life moves on.

when i was 14 i asked my father what walking like a man was and he said that it was being strong. in those days i didn't understand those metaphors but now as a poet such is my duty.

  22. k.... ....

D, hear the drums here, embellishing, not in the limelight, but still so good

  29. d.... ....

"I was a young and I didn't know what to do when I saw your best steps stolen away from you..."
Reminds me of when my mother walked out on my Dad... and then a few years later when I seen him get news that his brother had killed himself.
Man I wish I could go back and do things different.

Some things, if not most things in life are beyond our control. Forgive ourselves our mistakes, learn from them and try to pass on what we have learned to the next generations.

Turn it around? Grab the bull by the HORNS, and say FUCK IT! Live life as FULL as you can? DO IT GODDAMMIT!?!?!
    Don't waste your life away?

  46. K.... F....

First song I heard when I had made the arrangements for my dad's funeral. That was 20+ years ago, to this day I can't listen to it without tearing up. Especially the line about his "best steps stolen away...."

    K.... F....

    Sorry to hear that.

  47. L.... H....

High school would not have been as easy without your musical inspiration. Humble thanks to you. Life without music has no color, or passion

  48. t.... ....

    if you have lost someone
    this is the song

  49. T.... ....

    I understand entirely.

  50. L.... ....

If i had a son and he would write this song for me there would any stop to that walking for me. Even if i would be dead.

  51. j.... ....

One of the most moving songs ever written about the relationship between a father and son. For me Springsteen is the greatest songwriter there has ever been. The sheer depth, quality and consistency of his material over a 40 year period puts him in a class of his own as far as I am concerned.

  52. G.... H....

My Mom has the start of Alzheimers. I live right by the church and love this song. I have this played in my wedding video. Just so amazing. Walk like a Man!

  57. K.... P....

he is the best song writer of all time, long after you are dead and what ever crap you find regal has rotten away , he will still touch hearts as his words are remembered time and time again

  58. T.... ....

Well, My pops is a Jersey boy and in fading into his end with Alzheimers. He was everything I ever wanted in a father and now I'm losing him to this dreaded disease.. One on my fonest memories was when I lived in Spain and the DJ played this somg for me. I've never forgotten that, or this some. Bruce is a 6th or 7th cousin of mine. He and his music have been there for me over the years. Especially this song.. It'll be played at his funeral. Thanks Bruce.

"Would they ever look so happy again, the handsome groom and his bride, as they step into that long black limousine for their mystery ride"...utter genius.

  65. b.... ....

the fact that he is a football star, and she is a ministers daughter is more important than what the already are? a man and a woman? hopely good people that´s all that should matter to you. many football stars, and too many ministers daughters ended up being not so special people. i hope your son has a great life, and your future daughter in law, a good life being good people, whether they are stars or not. :)

  66. j.... w....

when I hear this song it reminds me of when i met my wife.
