Bruce Springsteen - The Time That Never Was Lyrics

Oh whoa whoa
Oh whoa
Oh whoa

Sometimes I wake up in the morning and it cuts me like a knife
I come face-to-face with my longing for another world, another life
And a time that never was
Oh a time that never was

We drove on, fueled not by the future but by a past we could never touch
Forced to run head-on collisions till we vanished in the dust
Of a time that never was
Whoa whoa whoa, the time that never was
Whoa whoa whoa whoa

So kiss me once more baby, one more kiss baby you must
Don't ever let me forget, girl, a time that never was
A time that never was
Oh whoa whoa, the time that never was
Oh whoa whoa, the time that never was
Oh whoa whoa, that never was
Oh whoa whoa whoa
Oh whoa whoa
Oh whoa whoa whoa

Bruce Springsteen The Time That Never Was Comments
  1. C.... M....

Sounds like something straight off Darkness on the Edge of Town. My favourite track on the River unreleased stuff that out a few years ago.

  3. B.... G....

    This is unbelievable
    First time of hearing this
    My new favourite track
    Love you Bruce
Dont ever stop writing and touring

  4. M.... F....

Can't believe this didn't make it onto the album....so Roy Orbison....one of my all time favourites.

  5. M.... M....

Searching my own name brought me here.

  6. G.... Y....

This, Loose Ends, Cadillac Ranch and Price You Pay. All off the River Outtakes Album. I listen to them on the way to work to get me in the mood. Then to wind down on the way home it's Wreck On The Highway (paradoxically), Nowhere Man and Fade Away. The Boss is still unsurpassed in my opinion.

  7. s.... ....

Another goddam masterpiece. Beyond talented, genius, or legendary. The best.

I cant admit to being a fan of THE BOSS, this is some tune, was used on the end credits to a film I watched recently. On repeat.

    R.... G....

Russell Greig was it Patti Cake$ ?

    R.... G....

movie_dude_ Yes. It's Patti Cake$. Just went to the movie few days ago 👍

    R.... G....

Surprising song for the ending of a movie about rap. I did like the movie. But this song reminded me of Eddie and The Cruisers.

  15. R.... H....

In my opinion, this album is superior to the released album 'The River',same as 'The Promise',way superior to'Darkness On The Edge Of Town',but, that's just my opinion

  16. N.... C....

    G.... F....

    Yeah ... sure ...

    G.... F....

Bruce is Irish - italian. Bruce Springsteen Zerilli.

  18. s.... w....

Another Springsteen track, with the song structure, chords, and melody rooted in the doo-wop, Drifters, etc. era. One of the many reasons to love him.

  19. M.... R....

    .......♡♡♡

I love your "reply" "comment. It reminds me of the great Bruce song (of so many), 'Hearts of Stone' . . . as also performed graciously by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

My favorite outtake from this box set. Does anybody else think this sounds like John Cafferty's "Tender Years"? I know that they knew each other around that time. I heard that Bruce was a big fan of Beaver Brown back then and always used to ask John if he could get up and jam with them. I always thought they were a big influence on Bruce. I'm just saying.

    r.... b....

It's possible . But the talent level of Bruce and John aren't even in the same room . Some people are capable of a few good songs , others have careers spanning an entire lifetime writing one classic after an another .
John is good but Bruce is an extremely rare talent , and that is an understatement .
And I'm not only talking about John Cafferty , but Jon Bon Jovi as well . Bruce is a musical and lyrical genius . His performances in the 1970's were probably some of the best rock and roll showed ever .

    r.... b....

    Rock and roll " shows " , dam auto-spell , lol .

Cafferty came AFTER Bruce. Bruce already had his second album out around the time Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band formed. They didnt even release a debut album until the 80s and I believe they had a hard time getting signed because they were too much like Bruce and the E Street Band. Bruce wrote this song in 1980 (amazingly kept it shelved for 35 years, not even worth for his Tracks box set...which is amazing too). I believe Tender Years came out in 1983 (or was it written before the Eddie and the Cruisers movie) but the two songs do sound very similar. I know the director of that movie modeled the band after Bruce and the E Street Band and I believe Southside Johnny was a musical consultant on the film too. To add even more conspiracy/mystery...I saw a video where Cafferty performed Tender Years at a tribute to Clarence Clemmons. There is also video from 1984 of Cafferty performing the song looking alot like Bruce did at that time.

Tender Years is a great song. Very Bruce-sounding. However, this song was recorded in June 1979 whereas Cafferty's Tender Years wasn't released until the following year as a single. I do believe the coda in Tender Years was inspired by Jungleland. It's kind of a Jungleland in reverse, but that's just my opinion.

  21. C.... R....
