Bruce Springsteen - Highway 29 Lyrics

I slipped on her shoe, she was a perfect size seven
I said "There's no smokin' in the store ma'am."
She crossed her legs and then
We made some small talk that's where it should have stopped
She slipped me her number, I put it in my pocket
My hand slipped up her skirt, everything slipped my mind
In that little roadhouse
On Highway 29

It was a small town bank it was a mess
Well I had a gun you know the rest
Money on the floorboards, shirt was covered in blood
And she was cryin', her and me we headed south
On Highway 29

In a little desert motel the air was hot and clean
I slept the sleep of the dead, I didn't dream
I woke in the morning, washed my face in the sink
We headed into the Sierra Madres 'cross the border line
The winter sun shot through the black trees
I told myself it was all something in her
But as we drove I knew it was something in me
Something that'd been comin' for a long long time
And something that was here with me now
On Highway 29

The road was filled with broken glass and gasoline
She wasn't sayin' nothin', it was just a dream
The wind come silent through the windshield
All I could see was snow, sky and pines
I closed my eyes and I was runnin'
I was runnin' then I was flyin'

I listened to this in 96, dad took me to Edinburgh to see him for the first time, paid a fortune through touts, here I am now at 36 listening to this, the whole album was great but this one stood out, and is more then relevant, this is about someone going south over the border to escape and start a new life in Mexico, on par with paradise from the rising album, thank you Bruce

I think this may be Bruce’s best lyrics of all the music he’s ever written.. truly..

I saw this live at Massey Hall in Toronto. I have never been so hauntingly mesmerized by a performance.

A true master. One of my favorite songs of Bruce. I rushed home today to listen to this song on my fancy speaker, like I do many other days too😄😄

This song and Straight Time seem like perfectly composed musical novellas. I swear Springsteen must have summoned the ghost of Steinbeck for this entire album. The lyrics are sublime.

To me there is no song that better establishes Bruce's songwriting ability than this song. One cannot help but be completely absorbed by its story.

Film noir in a 3 and a half minute song.

Yeah, so I bought this album (tape) when it first came out many moons ago. I played the hell out of it. My question today is "How could any human with even the smallest bit of a soul have down voted this, much less four soulless people?" I fail to comprehend this but hey what do I know, right?

    Hello,

I love this song and all of the songs on the album The Ghost Of Tom Joad. I know the title track off by heart like also Sinaloa Cowboys and most of Highway 29 and when some other song gets stuck in my head and starts to annoy me a bit I just sing The Ghost Of tom Joad to myself and then I no longer have that other song in my head. The song The Ghost Of Tom Joad resets my brain. :)
