Bruce Springsteen - Darkness On The Edge Of Town Lyrics
Well, they're still racing out at the Trestles,
But that blood it never burned in her veins,
Now I hear she's got a house up in Fairview,
In a style she's trying to maintain.
Well, if she wants to see me,
Tell her there's a spot out 'neath Abram's Bridge,
And tell her, there's a darkness on the edge of town.
There's a darkness on the edge of town.
Well, everybody's got a secret, Sonny,
Something that they just can't face,
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it,
They carry it with them every step that they take.
Till some day they'll just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down,
or looks too long in your face,
In the darkness on the edge of town.
In the darkness on the edge of town.
Well now some folks are born into a good life,
And other folks get it anyway, anyhow,
Well now I lost my money and I lost my wife,
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now.
Tonight I'll be on that hill 'cause I can't stop,
I'll be on that hill with everything I got,
With lives on the line where dreams are found and lost,
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost,
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town.
In the darkness on the edge of town.

Lyrics:
Well, they're still racing out at the Trestles,
But that blood it never burned in her veins,
Now I hear she's got a house up in Fairview,
In a style she's trying to maintain.
Well, if she wants to see me,
You can tell her that I'm easily found,
Tell her there's a spot out 'neath Abram's Bridge,
And tell her, there's a darkness on the edge of town.
There's a darkness on the edge of town.
Well, everybody's got a secret, Sonny,
Something that they just can't face,
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it,
They carry it with them every step that they take.
Till some day they'll just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down,
Where no one asks any questions,
or looks too long in your face,
In the darkness on the edge of town.
In the darkness on the edge of town.
Well now some folks are born into a good life,
And other folks get it anyway, anyhow,
Well now I lost my money and I lost my wife,
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now.

In the darkness on the edge of town.
A song abouts darkness that's points in the direction of the light. Bless u Bruce
Vive music of my life
For wanting things that can only be found......
Bruce is easily one of the best song writers ever
Definitely one of my favourite singer-songwriters. I loved his memoir "Born To Run" too. He has a lot of great stories to tell in it. I especially loved the one he told about his daughter Jessica, who obviously had an independent streak at a very young age. Once she decided she was ready to go into a bed, she did.
I've recently moved to the edge of London to an area where the street lighting is really poor - seemed like an appropriate track to play!
READ THAT HERE AS THINK .FROM WHAT I'VE TO TELL YOU CAN FIND SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN AN EAR.TO ACT.THANKS KARIN POINT BLANK
This song goes out to Miss Robin Price, Class of 1984, Terre Haute South High School.
the best of springsteen
Who are the 60 clowns that down voted the Boss and this absolute gem?!?
Mark Lynch justin bibier .
Don't worry be happy we all have arseholes and even opinions!!!!

akens bridge
There’s a darkness on the edge of many towns
well I did tellyallipopinandout brucie andjulesandjax
love the ending of this song
The Gospel According To The Boss.
rage , passion , what else , life in a song
one of the classic bruce songs that comes across better live in my opinion
Appena ascoltata alla radio, me ne sono subito immediatamente innamorato. Bellissima musica, bellissima canzone.
life long fan, the earlier the better
THE BOSS= BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
Absolute favorite Bruce Springsteen song How could it not be yours?
BRUCE JUICE
This N backstreets I rock sway to cry to.
This is so beautiful, it makes me cry everytime.
A song that stirs your soul.
Best song ever. Doesn't get more powerful then this.
I'll be on that hill.
It's really hard to pick the "Best" song of Bruce because of how much material he has but this has to be in the top 3 easily. I think this, New York City Serenade, and The Promise are his best.
if you listen to the piano riff from 4:06 then you can hear that riff again in the following song from Deacon Blue...only it's a bit faster. :)

Ok Boss....
46 people live in the darkness on the edge of town.
So do I.
I used to sing this song for myself when I was taking a walk to the river which was on "the edge of town" and I was thinking of my life and asked myself what am I doing in this place? A few years after I travelled half of the world and lived to the full with having messages of Bruce's songs in my heart :-)
I guess you went down to the river
Such an underrated comment. Glad you had a wonderful experience my man :)
There's a Bruce song that fits every situation in life
What does this song mean?
there might be darkness out on the edge of town but God dang it I swear I saw the light and the comin of the Lord drivin into Cincy City on a warm summer night last year scared me but it hurt so good too .... whooo wheee hey Bruce Hey E street guys
There is a boss song for every situation, bad or good . All my victories and losses. Whatever mood I'm in at in given moment in my life. THANK YOU BRUCE.
does anyone have a way of knowing if a mp3 conversion will be good quality? Maybe I'll extract it myself from CD because my car can only play USB... ugh...
The best Springsteen album.
Along with The River.
And Born To Run
Honestly, you could make that argument for most of his albums
Springsteen finds nether worlds within the blissful realities which most people wish their lives were and thus are best to ignore. But he can't ignore them. Camus would have appreciated the sentiment in this song.
You sound like you're trying to pick up a girl reading a book at a bar.
Paul Tatara I imagine she'd get it. There's a lot to sift through.
Seen him 5 times....one of his best songs...& this is why he's The Boss ❤
Many good times had to this song!
Can't beliieve it's been 40 years...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxevxdRGepM Love this song so i covered it. Hope you will enjoy.
That album just turned 40 years old. Hats off to the Boss
"If she wants to see me, you can tell her I'm easily found." In other words: the phone works both ways!
Back then Pay Phone, Phone Booth or her mamas Land-Line.
This is pure music folks.
This was the best Springsteen album.
Nebraska
@Thomas Gamache I've heard this said a lot, but I think the title track and several others make Nebraska unrelatable to most people who are not violent criminals.
Violent criminals maybe.....however a rock an roll track like open all night, is easily relatable to even the holiest of the pacifist e street fans
How many shows u been 2 bud?? Just wondering??
@person See I love Nebraska album for that reason, cuz most of the album had a dark undertone but musically was beautiful, but this album was a very solid one too.
2018 and listening...
This one is on the money of course. Racing in the Street too....
Til SOMEDAY, they just cut loose!
is it piggly wiggly or hoggly woggly
It's jiglypuff
Esta buena canción la compuso BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN y la canto y la publico en el año 1978

Hey Bruce wake up!!!
To what.
He's actually called "The Boss" because way back in the day, Bruce would collect the money at the end of the night and distribute it amongst his bandmates, back when they were a bar band. :)
I say shotgun, you say wedding
No, it's because he was Snake's mentor, big boss
Thank you for the information my answer to the question I always wanted to know finally been answered
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost.....
hmmm ......simply the Best ???
the best parts of Bruce's best songs reach down into your guts, grab your soul and yank it out of you...so you can get to know yourself
thumbs down? wtf?
idiots.
Jax teller song SOA
SAMCRO leave me here
A friend of mine told me that Bruce had made the following statement; "This is my first album in my adult voice". Gotta love that line!
Amen and Then Some.
Fans will argue about the best of Bruce, Darkness is where I came in during the UK punk thing. Was introduced to this album and worked backwards. Man is an awesome songwriter, #endof
"Now some guys they just give up living, start dying little by little piece by piece, Some guys come from work and wash up and go racing in the street"
Born to Run was his last chance after he got a lot of ballyhoo at the beginning of his career as "The New Dylan" but did not get many sales (although i think his first two albums were great). "Darkness" finally shut up his naysayers
Bruce captures that sense of hunger and longing for something better than he's got like no other artist can or ever could... it's incredible.
The Boss.
Absolutely 👍👍
This song is a goodie
Jack Valentine I
Could you tell please tell me in what tempo this song is played?
Am i the only one who hears the intro of the beatles Song "BABY YOU'RE A RICH MAN" in a lower tempo?
Yep, you're the only one
You're right, the tempo is a little bit lower. DAMN YOU, BRUCE. When you rip off the intro of "BABY YOU'RE A RICH MAN" by THE BEATLES, then for God's sake do it in the right tempo
Was anyone else listening to E Street Radio the other day when some idiot was asked what their favorite track on Darkness was & responded with "Candy's Room"!?!?
Nancy Ritter that’s not dumb at all. All 10 of these songs are as good as a song as you’ll ever hear
So often my favorite Bruce song will change throughout the week.
Pretty much every song on Darkness is 9/10 or 10/10 so it's not that bad.
The hammer drum blow and primal howl thirty seconds in still hits me right between the eyes and sends shivers down my spine, same as it did the first time I cued up that album thirty-eight years ago.
sigh. I remember it too. and he scored the cover of time or Newsweek back then. we all said who's this? of course I was in his and into zep, and all the rick bands. but I became lifetime fan. he looks impossibly young here..
fuck dude its the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jay Mann it's like he's sticking his chest out saying I ain't afraid of shit...
An I'm easily found
In the darkness on the edge of town ...
Speaking words of wisdom
this song always makes me want to be with friends in the field we hang out in. the tune maybe.
Funny thing was back in the UK this single was to be found in the New Wave/Punk section back in the late 70's. He did a blinding version of Suicide''s Dream Baby Dream. Brilliant artist, makes many folks happy.
A great one!
His finest song.
gots to love some springsteen
Can you say - EPIC beyond all proportions? Lyrics of my life!
Still stirs my soul...
otherwise known as the story of my life.
+maryjbelle The lives of many regular folks in America today.
and $pecial -.^
Best song he ever did. The passion and hunger in this performance stays with me. The ending where he is just making sort of longing, yearning sounds.. wow.
Absolutely his best. I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this song. I mean, I remember right where I was standing. So powerful.
Those yearning, howling sounds are so great I think.
Out in the Street
Reverent and Amen.
"well if she wants to see me, tell her i'm easily found" everything in plain words, that's great lyrics
Reminds me of Dylan's "If You See Her Say Hello"
If she's passin' back this way
I'm not that hard to find
Tell her she can look me up
If she's got the time
Both of them are the best American lyricists ever born. Possible the best rock lyricists as well EVER.
One of his best,,ever.
@Greg Cotter, yes, it's true. The Boss was at his best.
Compared with the original beauty of American soul how ugly and miserable is the world of the US rich and mighty! Serbia is with you Bruce, always!
Ivan
This is the Bruce I liked...Not the Born In The USA one so much....
Although Born in the USA does have "I'm on Fire," an awesome song.
His entire discog is amazing...
I also prefer the early Springsteen, and that's saying much since I love the Born in The USA phase. This is my personal favorite album of his, followed by Nebraska.
@james davis once he sold out to sell albums he lost me.
@Clay Green Then may I suggest you listen to magic with an open mind. I love the old stuff, it felt like he was singing my life. And then he got away from it for awhile. He found d his way home in Magic.
Thank You PAUL :)
Rod below comments that this has piano. i can absolutely confirm that the original album had this. This track and Racing are the best on this album. Springsteen later commented that it was too bare production-wise. I think it works better this way. Simple, tough, angry. His best stuff before he went pop.
Agreed. you can hear the subtle changes between this, the river and born in the usa. Never bought another album after born in the usa. this one, my first, did it for me!
By the way, you have to check out the the three part movie posted by yotufo. Some incredible footage. The whole thing is so informative and moving too.
Yeah, didn't like his 80's stuff....Prove it all night was a great track also...
Who gave this a thumbs down?!. For shame.
just an awesome song!
de las mejores canciones del boss
This sounds like the version I have on the CD.
indimenticabile ...
@OperaOfViolence...this version is different to the one I have on an old cassette (remember them ?...;0)..).....this has piano on it ...the tape does not ..and is faster.
MASTERPIECE!
