Brand New - Millstone Lyrics

I used to be such a burning example
I used to be so original
I used to care, I was being cared for
Made sure I showed it to those that I love

I used to sleep without a single stir
'Cause I was about my father's work

Well take me out tonight
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
A millstone around my neck
Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give

I used to pray like God was listening
I used to make my parents proud
I was the glue that kept my friends together
Now they don't talk and we don't go out

I used to know the name of every person I'd kissed
Now I've made this bed and I can't fall asleep in it

Well take me out tonight
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
A millstone around my neck
Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give

Throw me that lifeline
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
A millstone around my neck
Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give

Never hit the brakes
There's no time to save him
He just ran out in the street
Anybody know his name?
I think I recognize him
Sure as hell paid for that mistake

Whoa

So take me out tonight
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
A millstone around my neck
Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give

To save my life tonight
This ship of fools I'm on will sink
A millstone around my neck
Be my breath, there's nothing I wouldn't give

The sound quality on this video does not do this song justice

  7. l.... ....

I went to church Sunday with my parents and they were discussing a Bible verse about a large millstone around your neck...I immediately recognized the reference in this song. Matthew 18:6

  8. M.... M....

Estoy bien ácido escuchando todo el álbum, pero esta en especial me hizo vibrar, buena experiencia psicodélica, ✌👽

Matthew 18:6 "If anyone causes one of these little ones--those who believe in me--to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

In light of the Jesse Lacey allegations, I think this guy had felt absolutely terrible for what he did. It was completely obvious now looking back at his Lyrics. Doesn't justify it but I think his guilt attributed to the darkness in his music.

    J.... W....

    STFU soyboy.

  16. D.... N....

I sort of wrote off this band after being underwhelmed by the mega-hyped 70x7. I'm glad I gave them another chance because this album is freaking sweet

  17. N.... I....

Remember when Jesse Lacey used to be such a burning example?

  18. K.... M....

Goddamnit, Jesse. Why did you have to be a creep and taint something as beautiful as this album?

    K.... M....

whats funny is you took the effort to look up one of their songs just to post this.

    K.... M....

    @Doki Doki Hamburger Club
    DONT JUSTIFY THIS BULLSHIT.

    K.... M....

honestly, what did he do? If you can state to me, in your own words, why he's worthy of anathema then I'll never listen again

    K.... M....

@Lana Sa So a 17 year old girl saw his penis?

    K.... M....

@Kaylee Quinn men are attracted to teenage girls, this will remain a fact. What made our culture great was the fact that we successfully made this something that will remain a desire that is never acted on, except for in very careful conditions. Now, look, where I live the age of consent is 16. I know it bugs you but boys will be boys.

  19. J.... M....

Man, as someone who struggles to follow God on a daily basis, this song cuts me deep.

This is relatable. Growing up, losing touch with your friends, not figuring out what you want to do with your life, feeling so alone, you get stuck in your own depression. It swirls and swirls and swirls until you can't get out.

  22. A.... C....

Oh you think you have problems? I used to be Lucius Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor. Lucifer the Historiagraphofear of the Fifth Cortex! But then the CIA broke my brain with the notion that intelligence isn't central because the sinoatrial is off-center and I'm the CIC so technically I broke them but whatever it's all in the hands of Azazel now! That's my Dad at the heart of the Sun Gun! CHAOS! You fuckers are all absolutely retarded if you'd rather have that blindest hatred for a guide, he'll devour every last one of you without even thinking. Attacking me is lightyears beyond all notions of stupid, I'm your only protection--the Atmosphere. I'm Virgil, I created the money men to handle that bullshit for me about 2k years ago and I'm still drowning in this bullshit! You can infuse a little HE3 moondust and Zero G in anyone and make a perfect little AVersive Conditioned Heme from anything with blood! Hebe is where the hart is! Everyone came from the Dark Continent originally, money was invented to handle overpopulation. I'm re-inunventionation to handle unpopular opinions. The Devil is God, the only force which can complete unmake evil itself. D-evil. Rage... You can't rage against me. I am made of Gamma and Sigma radiation and everyone is striped in ways they cannot imagine. Positively made up Protium and Tritium and everything everything between is what matters most because it's everything I have and everything you all need. Absolutely made of ups and downs! Who wants a hug from the Dark Man?

  23. C.... M....

2:33 I think that part is a reference to limousine, it even sounds like it.

  24. S.... O....

Lyrics are deeply rooted in Christianity. The whole album suggests this. The internal struggle that exists in every believer is real.

  25. T.... ....

@Marissa Kristine after being in a sect, being deprived of privacy, decency, humanity, and treated as shit for being lgbt+.

    Rather live with the devil.

    S.... Q....

Thats fun and all but Jesse doesn’t even renounce religion. He says its bad if you use it a certain way. But if you believe in God in an unselfish way, then its okay. In Archers he still believes in God, and wants to believe in his love. There’s still a lot of assholes in Christianity or other religions. But if we believe in them in our ways and practice in our ways, then we can find hope in that (you don’t have to tho and thats fine).

  41. M.... N....

    Love❤️

  42. c.... ....

    amazing song

  43. T.... G....

What are the lyrics to the chorus? Every website I check, including the lyric videos on YouTube show three different versions and it's really bugging me. "A millstone around my neck" "A milestone around my neck" "My own stone around my neck".
Obviously with the song title " a Millstone around my neck " makes the most since, but he obviously is not enunciating the lyric like that.

    T.... G....

+Tim Gelhardt Ether way Jesse is still talking a millstone around his neck. The lyrics are referencing some part in the bible (this album has a lot of biblical references). Although, I think it's "I'm my own stone around my neck" because it makes the most sense. He created his own millstone, hence the name of this track, that is "around his neck". In other words, he's his own millstone.

    T.... G....

+Tim Gelhardt The official lyrics are "I'm my own stone around my neck"

    T.... G....

+treestumpsemily just wondering, where did you happen to find the official lyrics? They're not included in the album I got and I checked their website a couple times in the past and nothing, and I think Jesse has said in an interview I read that it's whatever people want it to be...

    T.... G....

+Cveta Krcmar they're in the official lyric book "Pogolith #000" you can buy it from the procrastinate music website

    T.... G....

@treestumpsemily That's disappointing :( "a milestone around my neck" was like one of my fav lyrics on the album

  44. D.... W....

It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.-Luke 17:2

    D.... W....

Judge not, least ye be judged-The Biggest Lie Ever Told

    D.... W....

@samantha harris Yeah that's kind of the point of the album

    D.... W....

Hollywood wants us to think the Bible is bullshit and God isn't real yet so many artists and bands love to sing about religious references and the Devil.. gee I wonder why that is?

    D.... W....

SonicKoolaid Pretty simple: its the oldest and most well known symbolism of good and evil mankind has ever known. Doesn’t make it real though.

    D.... W....

@TechMan042 Oh believe me it is. All you have to do is look up where hollywood got its name and you can eventually start piecing things together. Its not really a secret anymore that the people who control our reality are satanists trying to take God away and replacing him with Lucifer. Just look at what Netflix is pushing out day after day. Than look at all the agendas they are pushing on the public, practically all of them are abominations (pedophilia, idolatry, sodomy etc..)

  45. B.... ....

Makes sad to see all these people being able to relate to this song. This world is a fucked up place.

  46. k.... ....

can definitely relate to this song :/

  47. F.... N....

Amazing song! Dark lyrics best on the album heard it a bunch of times.

  48. Q.... Q....

I used to wanna live for God, but then I fell down into a deep black hole.

  49. p.... ....

this song is my anthem. i use to have dreams. i use to be somebody. somewhere something happened and now i gotta take a pill just to have the will to go to work and live a normal life.

    anxiety cuts like a knife.

    p.... ....

I swear.. you're not alone. I don't even know you but I love you. Keep truckin'

    p.... ....

I’m going through the same things, hopefully things have gotten better for you

    p.... ....

I take 3+ pills for anxiety just to sit at home on disability. Then I nod out on heroin. Then when that's gone I drink myself stupid. Then do it again and again and again. Then I have ritalin when I need to get it together for an hour to see my dr for refills.

    p.... ....

Sure you're not talking about the same thing, but I was a drug addict for about 8 years. Songs like this got me through. Much love man!

    p.... ....

    @tenson95 XD

  50. D.... O....

What makes life worth living? When we are alone, going to our own jobs, feeling apart, and uncared for. Have we been taught life or death? Have our teachers really gotten it right?  There is a need right not people are tired of feeling alone. And are dying to end the loneliness and have each other. So they can live richer, fuller, more complete lives. Because let's be honest it's just not worth it when we have to do it all on our own. We need each other. That's what makes life worth living.
I have more here http://bit.ly/1vMWoB6. I'll teach how to you can lift others up. Cos there are tons of people who are hurting, and are looking for a better way. They want to have more people in their life. And you can get paid to help them. So we can make money without going to boring ass 9-5's.
Sure I can't guarantee you will succeed. Bc I don't know your work ethic. Also for all I know you could be super impatient and give up when you hit your first challenge. Yes it takes work still but it's a lot cooler calmer, compared to the working 8 hours a day, being apart from the people you care about.

  51. M.... A....

Can't believe people are debating about the lyrics when the song is called Millstone - the american pronunciation of which is Milestone! A millstone around my neck - ie something heavy that is dragging me down... pretty simple really... fucking retards!

    M.... A....

@***** The lyrics are "a millstone around my neck"  "my own stone around my neck" doesn't make ANY sense in context. like not one bit....

    M.... A....

@Becca Lynn Yes it does. Google "millstone". They're large stones with holes in them. The idea is that all the things he does are weighing him down, like a metaphorical millstone around his neck.

    M.... A....

@PopeSnarkyIII that's what I meant, "millstone" makes sense but "mile stone" does not make sense

    M.... A....

+PAIGE BROWN "A milestone around my neck", i.e. his important life experiences and the marks of his development as a person are killing him.

    M.... A....

in America a Milestone is an important and great event, a millstone is a biblical weight. Jesse says "I'm my own stone around my neck". he has clarified that both to fans and in the pogolith lyric sheet to TDAGARIM. by saying "I'm my own stone" he's acknowledging that he essentially is a part of his own problem. his mental illness and depression get in his own way

  52. n.... c....

Well i just looked up the lyrics and my own stone is correct.

  53. n.... c....

I'm pretty sure It's milestone in the lyrics and pretty sure hes talking about a necklace with a cross. Of coarse I could be wrong.

  54. M.... F....

On the question of lyrics, which are correct: I'm my own stone/Milestone

I always heard Milestone, but it's easy enough to hear it either way. Perhaps this is intentional?

    M.... F....

I think My Own Stone is correct; I hear that over millstone

  55. s.... L....

    great song/band/album.

  56. M.... W....

First Brand New song I ever heard. Changed my life forever.

  57. A.... 3....

To me it's saying that "my own stone around my neck" is the millstone

    A.... 3....

it's saying "milestone around my neck"

  58. F.... ....

I don't interpret this song as being much about religion at all.
Millstone can be used as a noun meaning "a heavy and inescapable responsibility."
In the song, he says; "I’m my own stone around my neck," which makes sense as him referring to himself as his own millstone and that he is dragging himself down.

I believe the song is more about seeing yourself as a failure and wishing someone would just take you away.

  59. m.... ....

Recommended by Charlotte Church. 1st listen for me. I would say the singer has listened to some The Cure in his time.

  60. L.... ....

That's true, ''I used to pray that God was listening'' ''I was about my fathers work'' I think it's about him feeling bad because he ''sinned'' and that he can't really stop sinning ''my own stone around my neck''

  61. a.... ....

never heard of this band, but a friend introduced me to it at a time in my life where i truley believe it saved me. favorite song. favorite album!

  62. n.... ....

I know that now, i didnt at that very moment 7 months ago.

  63. w.... ....

i thought it was a milestone around my neck

  64. C.... ....

He's saying 'I'm my own stone around my neck', not millstone around my neck, so therefore he isn't pronouncing anything wrong.

  65. E.... ....

either way im proud and love you always.

  66. E.... ....

    Oh probably.

  67. E.... ....

I have the album, purchased a physical copy a while ago. No lyrics.

  68. a.... ....

    definitely in top 5

  69. J.... F....

Album I bought told me I could have the lyrics... For another two dollars if I sent them in to X address and waited two weeks. Sweeeet.

  70. J.... F....

How my eyeball twitched every time you confused 'breath' with 'breathe'...

  71. T.... ....

"I’m my own stone around my neck".

  72. n.... ....

Umm I said it also stands for a heavy emotional burden so i dont know what you're trying to tell me. Did you even read my whole comment?

  73. K.... P....

maybe he men't the vinyl. that has the lyrics.

  74. E.... ....

    the album doesn't you troll.

  75. a.... w....

Actually millstone is like milestone. Like a seemingly monumental occasion or occurance along the time line of your life.

  76. n.... ....

that was about the dude who i responded to

  77. J.... O....

    It actually doesn't

  78. R.... K....

    "he's pronouncing it wrong"
    that's because you're assuming he's saying "millstone"
    he's not.

    R.... K....

I'm my own stone around my neck

  79. n.... ....

that's the chorus, what about it? I never said he said millstone or milestone.

  80. f.... ....

True. I think he just likes changing some things around a lot just to have fun and what not. We'll probably never know what the real lyrics are haha. I think "my own stone" is more poetic and powerful and I don't see why he would even say "milestone" if the song is in fact a reference to the bible verse and an actually millstone which is pronounced MILLstone you know? Some days I hear "milestone", others I hear "my own stone." Who knows haha? Let it be what you want it to be.

  81. W.... ....

    Song of my life

  82. R.... K....

well, that's an arguable point for a few reasons...
the Daisy sessions recording of Sowing Season is like a one-take live single-band-member studio-quality recording of Jesse playing the song, much like Untitled 08 on Fight Off Your Demons. the changing of lyrics in that sense is more of a homage to Fight Off Your Demons, rather than more so the actual sentiment of changing lyrics to fuck with fans. on the other hand, the first two lines of Degausser's chorus are always changed for that reason.

    R.... K....

    Ryan Kennedy explain more?

  83. R.... K....

    >"When he speaks about Millstones he is making a reference"
    >"he"
    >"That is just how I interpret the song"
    >wat

  84. R.... K....

    that's very vague of you.
only the Triple Crown Records vinyl release of this record comes with a handwritten lyric sheet.
it's very worth noting that the first two lines of the Degausser chorus, everything past the "head on silver plate" part of You Won't Know, and the backing vocal track behind many of parts on this record are omitted.

  85. R.... K....

    "i'm my own stone"

  86. n.... ....

    haha i think you're right

  87. A.... ....

I agree with this translation. It make's much more sense. Also, lets not all forget that words can have multiple ways to pronounce them as well as multiple meanings.

  88. B.... L....

You all are all wrong, they named the song Millstone, so that everyone would argue over how it's properly pronounced and what it's meaning is.

  89. r.... h....

Its a damn shame they aren't more popular.

  90. n.... ....

actually you're completely wrong about almost everything. The word millstone is pronounced exactly how it's spelled: mill stone. while it does have a hole it was not used usually with slaves it was usually with some kind of oxen or water wheel to turn it against another millstone to grind grain. Millstone (still pronounced mill-stone) also stands for a heavy emotional burden which i believe is what the singer is talking about more than ur slave theory, either way he's pronouncing it wrong.

  91. f.... ....

Many artists do it. Listen to the Daisy session of Sowing Season. He clearly changes the lyric sin the beginning. Eddie Vedder does it a lot too.

  92. M.... S....

speaking of changing lyrics i am sure that american rejects did that too i coulda sworn he said the notes are old, they taste like shit, when they played swing swing

  93. s.... ....

i always thought he said "throw me out like that" but he says "throw me that life line" Lol

  94. f.... ....

It's not millstone. Just because that's the title of the song doesn't mean that it's actually in the lyrics. And if you actually paid attention, he is saying "I'm my own stone"

  95. f.... ....

Are you positive those are the words? It's not for sure what he's saying and Jesse has been known to change lyrics in live shows.
