Unfortunately people that listen to this genre of music loved to think they were super edgy and deep in high school, but never actually listened to the lyrics. Which is a shame because some of Brand New's best work is overlooked because people aren't really listening.

Totally. But mostly: "Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands". That line is so sick, I realized it more than a year after discovering the song. It's like, for me, that the girl is so drunk that she's about to fall asleep or unsconscious but to Lacey, her mouth is inviting him to do whatever the hell he's about to do. In that line, it's the mouth, not the girl that makes a demand. As if the mouth would represent Lacey's desire and be disconnected from the girl's will. I don't know how Lacey manages to play this song live. I could not be able to sing it to my audience. That song is maybe the worst in terms of confession. And to the lights of the accusations that went against him, it became even more scary that it was at the beginning. But god, that is still a fucking beautiful song.

I was very into Brand New back in my middle to high school days. I was very fond of their somber and what I thought to be realistic attitude towards their surroundings and their use of instrumentals was very encapsulating. I kind of grew out of this music specifically, but still remained a casual fan until I learned about the happenings with Jesse. And I definitely see where you're coming from on your side of it/how you explained your response to the song. However, I cannot describe the bar rape lyrics as anything besides "gross". That, on top of the fact that Lacey has been proven to not only be a douche bag to women, but also an actual pedophile, makes this all the worse and leaves a weird feeling that it almost romanticizes it... Yes, give me heart-breaking real and hard hitting lyrics. But just like with Front Porch Step, the person behind the lyrics can change the meaning entirely. Also, dude, you're really chill for just bringing your disagreement into conversation and not angry writing gibberish back. Just wanting you to know I appreciate that.

But if I recall (and correct me on this if I'm wrong) someone who has pedophilia has to be attracted to someone who is 13 or under and the women Lacey was asking nudes for were 16 and older. I'm not defending Lacey here, but the man has gotten treatment for his sex addiction over five years ago, he got married four years ago, and has a two year old daughter. I feel like he is a better person than he was 15 years ago and is trying to be a decent human and a good parent. His wife occasionally posts pictures of him and he always seems to be with his daughter and I think that's all he really cares about these days. Well said. I think if there was a little more forgiveness in the world than we'd be better off. At the same time though, we all can't just forgive and forget people's serious mistakes. Trust and respect are the most fragile things in life. It takes years for them to build up and seconds for them to crumble. Humanity is flawed and so was Jesse. Some fans like me used to treat Jesse Lacey as our hero. The reason was we saw ourselves in him. A person who was depressed, alone, and constantly trying to find some good in humanity and ourselves, but only seeing the devil instead of God in the world and ourselves. And while my respect for Jesse has diminished significantly, I still would like to someday shake his hand and tell him thank you for helping people like me get through some shitty times.
