Brand New - In The Water Lyrics
In the water, they sort it out
They were waist to neck in December somehow
In the water, they twist and shout
They were born again, so they can start living now
In the water, they saw the face
In the water, they asked them both
"How did you get the gold without digging any holes?"
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the grace
Never had a chance to break apart our heart for them to see
It's really a disgrace
"Hide your daughters", the old men say
You were young once before, you know how we get our way
We all see what once was beautiful has turned and old and grey
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the grace
Never had a chance to break apart our heart for them to see
It's really a disgrace
I can't fake it enough
Can't say it enough
Can't do it enough
I can't make it enough
Can't fake it enough
I don't want it enough
So everyone'll wait
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the grace
Never had a chance to break apart our heart for them to see
It's really a disgrace
I can't say it enough
Can't sing it enough
So I'll find another way
And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand ol' message
And I don't know about you but I never get tired of it
Seven years...

Brand New In The Water Comments
I'm not sure if I was suicidal, but I was also in a really dark place in November 2017. thank god the album had just come out. I remember listening to this song and 'batter up' on repeat for days. I had stopped living. I was just killing time (instead of killing myself) and this album helped me pass that time.
i dont think there is an album in music, that makes me feel as emotionally vulnerable as this one does... and i think this is my fav song on it now... after about 5000 listens.
Talk Talk
Immediately in my Top 5 Nizzle tunes of all time! It is absolutely in the TDAG vein of the band's defining sound, style, and hommage to previous tracks, allusions, and a nod to the Avant Garde experimentation of two of the last three Beatles studio albums... I'm catching a lot of Beatles nods *not just the obvious ones: 'never to see any other way' (A day in the life > Play Crack the Sky), 'twist and shout' and Revolution number 9, number 9, number 9> 7 years, 7 years, 7 years... and the Beauty Supreme chord change to create 3 specific hemispheres of Limousine, a song Jesse has made a point to do everything to make that track special and always in memory of Kate Flynn.
God this is great
this track is particularly the darkest Jesse has ever written, lyrically, I think. He talks about being baptized, all cleaned up, seemingly by impure men. Then he goes on to admit he has made mistakes, in sexual ground, with women. He criticizes the way we've been taught as men to go after women no matter how. He proceeds, then, to admit that he has been a fake. ´Can't say it enough, Can't sing it enough, Can't fake it enough'. As if, we, the listeners haven't been really paying attention to the fact, that his songs have been written from his own perspective, and the sins he's talked about, the struggles, the demons he continues to bring up in most of his songs, are not fictional. He didn't have the nerve to admit it publicly, or to talk about it with those girls he molested, but that doesn't mean he did not know it was wrong to do that, and I think he admits to have been struggling with those mistakes in this song, also adressing our terrible culture of power abuse, with women speciffically. The chorus also makes me think 'Drowning in the praise' ´For them to see it's really a disgrace'. It's a terrible feeling, I mean, to have done a terrible thing. To regret it. To keep ruminating over it for years, it does weigh on someone's shoulder, I think, even more than being thrashed to the public eye. I think this way Jesse finally has to face the things he has done. I hope he overcomes this moment of his life.
Agree with everything you said up until "girls he molested". Explain that one please, with proof, not speculation.
@Dustin Finn Jesse himself apologized to the women and yet you still claim its speculation??
@Sam He apologized for molesting them? No, he didnt. I didnt say his conduct was appropriate, or even legal. Still, he didnt molest anyone, well I dont know that, but he did not admit that. So it is speculation.
Yo brand new fuels my soul but this song is definitely something else,, my favorite hands down. Anyone got suggestions for bands/songs with a similar sound?
Fuck off google you ruin everything with shit adverts!! Piss off will ya!!
best song 2017
Has anyone on here ever heard 7 years after the Antichrist is born will be the end of time? That's what I kind of get out of the 7 years
Probably part of it. 7 is also God's number. There were 7 years between albums, too.
"They were young once before, you know how we get our way" is one of the most powerful lines I have EVER heard in a song.
Is anyone else reminded of Opeth by this song?
Corpus christi. If I'm swallowed but the sun spread the ashes across the sea so that I may enter without the map on my skin. Scars are on the outside to bury what'ts within. Corpus christi never to be seen again.
Felt this song in my soul when I was suicidal last fall. The whole album, actually
Same here buddy
My father hung himself when I was six. I pray to God that my daughter won't go that route. The government doesn't want her to know that. They took her away and gave her to a heroin addict.
best country song ever🤠🌽
I don't know about you, but I never get tired of this song.
;) gotcha lol
In the water, they sort it out
They were waist to neck in December somehow...
In the water, they twist and shout
They were born again, so they can start living now...
In the water, they saw the face
Of the man who was haunted, ashamed and disgraced...
In the water, they asked them both
"How did you get the gold without digging any holes?"
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the praise
Never had a chance to break apart
Hard for them to see
What's really a disgrace, now...
"Hide your daughters"
the old men say
We were young once before
You know how we get our way...
Feel the horror with no delay
We all see what once was beautiful has turned and
old and grey...
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the praise
Never had a chance to break apart
Hard for them to see
It's really a disgrace...
I can't think it enough
Can't say it enough
Can't do it enough
I can't make it enough
Can't fake it enough
I don't want it enough...
So everyone'll wait.
Never had it any other way
Drowning in the grace
Never had a chance to break apart
Hard for them to see
It's really a disgrace...
I can't say it enough
Can't sing it enough...
So I'll find another way.
Whoa. This whole time I thought it was "they were wasted men in December somehow." And I...kind of like that better, to be honest! Dang.
Big fan of all Brand New albums.
Science Fiction has finally grown on me, took 9 mos lol...
In The Water is now my favorite song by them.
That solo is surreal!
A stunningly beautiful song. Been a fan for a long time (15 years?) but didn't think they had this in them. Incredible.
Forever tainted now.
Dustin Finn dude, he said he did it?
Dustin Finn go read the Facebook post. Granted it was a crappy apology, but he admitted to sexually harassing two underage girls back in about 03
"you know how we get our way", now the whole world does. So appalled. Honestly use to love Lacey until he admitted that.
I mean.
We always knew Lacey was a bit of a terrible person.
First few album lyrics and all...
It's a shame that sexual abuse had to be there during that time but.
It's difficult to be particularly surprised by anything anymore...
Yeah but I mean it's not like he's a full on piece of shit freak on Harvey Weinstein and Dan Schneider's level, come on. He made mistakes, got help and came back from it and made this masterpiece of an album
@Rosehawka There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments, and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance—that principle is contempt prior to investigation.
(better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.)
*To the rest of you waiting to offer your commentary and sound like your opinion is rooted in more than dogshit, I truly hope that your fall from grace won't be as public or met with the same contempt as you show your fellow man.
Its important we dont get to big to where we start believing our own hype. I truly hope that you find someone not like you when you decide to face those demons and need someone to walk with you.
Ugh fuck this album is so ridiculously good and this is one of my favs. So many are my favs tho I can't pick just one
It's really a disgrace.
This fucking band still takes my fucking breath away. These lyrics are pure poetry.
Really reminds me of Blues Traveler.
Well that's definitely one for the impossible bingo card
5:43: And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand old message.
I don't know about you but I never get tired of it
Number... 7 years, 7 years, 7 years...
number nine, number nine, number nine...
never to see any other way
Amo los nepes
One person didn't read the title and thought this was a new Taking Back Sunday song at first. Not sure how you made that mistake, man.
Did anyone else notice that they referenced all of the albums in the last minute of the song? The opening radio thing from daisy, the seven years part is a reference to TDAG because that's how old the girl was when she died in the limousine crash but it's repeated 7 times to reference "70x7". The fact that we have already heard the daisy radio thing is a reference to deja entendu which means already heard. Fucking genius
there's also "You are not alone" from Waste, which was from Play Crack The Sky. there are more, for sure. but that's the one i immediately remember.
also from this one, "How did you get the gold without digging any holes?" is probably a reference to "Some men die under the mountain just looking for gold" off At The Bottom.
@Seth Stoll Some people just can't have that, I guess.
Amen brother. I love the way you layed that out. Brilliant
I love this thanks
Anybody has a clue about the meaning of the outro? Why they've put there the same recording from "Daisy"? What could the "7 years" repetition mean? (maybe an indication of the time it took them to make this record...?)
Maybe a limousine reference? (Seven loves you so much)
There are many references to their previous 4 records throughout this entire album. 1st, the excerpt from Daisy is obvious. 2nd, there is 7 years since the last album (its a month or two shy of 8 yrs). 3rd, Katie Flynn was seven ( that's the story behind limousine). 4th, "seven years" is repeated 7 times, could be a reference to 70x7 from the debut.
He’s talking about THE seven years. The last ones as he references in other songs in science fiction.
Haven't been able to stop listening to this song. One of BN's very best in my opinion. Right there with Quiet Things and At the Bottom.
This song gives off psychedelic rock vibes and I love it. Anyone else?
Kinda. Definitely the organ in the background.
is it just me or is the riff from law and order? lol
so beautiful, reminds me of alice in chains a bit
travisamazingable my thoughts exactly! The harmonies in the chorus
reminds me of Black Gives Way to Blue
man, everything about this song is kind of alice in chains, but not a ripoff. amazing song
This really reminds you of AIC? Pass the weed bro... Maybe I'm not hi enough!
heavenly
Best one of the album in my opinion
I agree, i can not stop listening to it. Takes me back to my junior year in HS and jamming to Deja. That CD never left my cd player and or car. Ever since then, every device has had Brand New.
Same here brother
Amazing album so that's a tough call but it's for sure up there
Latter years Talk Talk
This songs gives me such mixed vibes. First thing I thought was Acid Bath.
Haha, I fail to see how, but here's my thumb up!
acid bath is rad thumbs up for good taste in music
Wish they did a collab with Kevin Devine before they quit. And yes they've done tracks before but I don't recall on a Brand New album
Search "brand new Kevin Devine Jesus Christ" :)
I think they did on their song "Out Of Range" check it out if you haven't, absolutely beautiful
Kevin played some guitar on this album I believe.
This song is a work of art -- just perfect.
5:42 And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand old message. I don't know about you but I never get tired of it. Number...... 5:55
