The director much have told Chilton "look full of angst" and he was trying real hard--really, really hard, but everyone else is having a goof at his expense. Probably some choice late 60s drugs involved as well.

This performance was from January 18, 1969, not 1967. Neither Rick Allen (organ) nor Thomas Boggs ( drummer) had joined the group by 1967. The Box Tops also performed 'Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March' the same day. That song wasn't released until late 1968. And while Alex Chilton was 16 when he sang 'The Letter' (which was used here for them to lip synch to) he was 18 at the time of this performance. They did the Upbeat program several times though, some of which were in '67.

Did you know... the dude who sung this, was only 16 at the time? The song was supposed to be sung by the Archies (Sugar, Sugar) but they couldn't make it that day and so in a pinch, they needed a lead singer and someone said they knew this guy who could sing. So, he comes down to the studio, gives it a crack and well, a one-hit-wonder was born! Love how his voice sounds like that of a 40-year-old, 2 pack a day, man who's seen some things.

I met Alex Chilton in a Glasgow pub in the 90s, he bought me a drink. We had a nice chat, he told me about Sky Saxon and Charles Manson both of whom he knew. He was a sweet, sweet man, lovely, charming, polite. I tear up at the thought because he was a genius and it's a rare thing to meet someone as talented as that and for them to be humble, unpretentious and friendly. Maybe if Obamacare had existed at the time that he became ill, he'd still be making music. It's very sad but he gave us many beautiful things.

school dance. The songs on the radio in "69 were one classic after another. I was a senior that year, ready to graduate and
about to enjoy my last summer before entering the Air Force. I must say, the combination of music, girls and summer freedom,
not to mention the excitement of being 17 and experiencing my first steps into adulthood was more than I could hope for. Those
memories flooded my brain and have remained with me to this day. I was never more free than that summer. I've enjoyed my life
completely since but the summer of my youth, when I was old enough to appreciate it, remains my favorite summer of all.
