Bobby Bare - New Cut Road Lyrics
Coalman Bonner was a fiddle playin' fool.
He was a backwoods rounder and a breaker of mules.
Coalman Bonner's got a wor' out bow,
He been playin' two days down a new cut road.
Your Daddy's going to Louisville, He'll be back tonight.
He gonna get another wagon and a good pair of mules.
Oh, we gonna move to Texas, We just waitin' on mules.
Now Coalman's Daddy, he pulled up in the yard
He said 'back up your lives kids, it's getting' too hard.
Kentucky's alright but there's too many people
Well, just the other day, I thought I saw a church steeple.
Now Coalman said 'Daddy don't you worry 'bout me,
I'm wanna drink that sour mash, I'm gonna raise that mare
Ya, I got me a woman with a foxy red hair
We all been movin' west since the day he got married
I'm getting' off the wagon, I'm too old to be carried
I'm gonna stay in Kentucky where the blue grass grows
I'm gonna play it all night down a new cut road.
Now Coalman's Daddy said, "What's it all comin' to,
Young people these days are just stubborn as mules."
He can't make um go, he's too old for that
It's that damned ol' fiddle and that bowler hat.
Now Coalman's Momma said, "Let the boy stay,
'Cause he's raised up solid, he can find his own way
But as for me, Honey, I'm with you
Well I always thought Kentucky was just passin' through.
Coalman's little sister, she started in a cry
And her Daddy shook his head for the very last time
Coalman's Momma said, "Somebody gotta do it,
Wouldn't be no Kentucky, less you didn't stick to it, Coalman.
Coalman Bonner stood on the porch of that cabin
Watched um all go to Texas in a covered wagon
He pulled out his fiddle and he rosined up his bow
And he played a little tune down a new cut road...

Bobby Bare New Cut Road Comments
Guy Clark wrote this amazing song. I'd kill to have a nice, live version, with the incomparable Mr Bobby Bare.
ricky skaggs played fiddle on this
A very surprising song in the lyrics. Guy Clark was insightful and creative. And Bobby Bare does a great job of interpreting it just right.
When Bobby and I were both young men, I heard him at Church Street Station in Orlando, Florida. The consummate entertainer! Love every song, but this and Detroit City rings something special to a misplaced Mississippi boy who lived "up north" for financial reasons.
New cut rd has changed a lot ! It’s not the hick road to Fairdale anymore ! 😏
Love it 😂
It's a guy Clark song Ricky Scags plays fiddle. I love me some Bobby Bare. Remember when this was a hit. Not what they play on country radio now,
Sorry, officer. I didn't mean to speed.
The pretty boys and the Miranda clines in Gnashville should hang their heads in shame if they ever hear this.
A Big Amen to THAT!!!!!!!!
Ricky Skaggs on fiddle.
Great song, makes me want to dance.
Wilbur, not only did I hear it on the radio when it first came out, but so did my two-year-old daughter. When the song ended, she wanted to know who that man was singing the song. I told her, and she asked me to turn off the radio and play a Bobby Bare record. I had to explain that we didn't have any Bobby Bare records. She disappeared into her room and soon emerged wearing her little pink-check jacket, carrying her little pink purse, ready to go to the mall to buy a Bobby Bare record. That night, "Sam Brown Bear" (her teddy bear) got a new name; he is known to this day as "Bobby Bear", and she still has the bear.
I live off of New Cut Rd in Louisville, Ky.
Love this song. When people used to ask me where I'd been I would respond, "Playing all night down the new cut road."
My uncle said when he told my Grandpa about YouTube the first thing he asked him to play was New Cut Road by Bobby Bare. We sure miss traditional country music!!
I am a huge bobby bare fan, + he does guy clark songs. a good mix. if u wanna hear a REAL good one, it would be Townes Vanzandt's tecumceh valley. bobby's version.
i love this, and i DO hear it on willies roadhouse on sirius channel 59
Always loved this song.
Love it, been one of favorite songs for years. Just found it on You Tube.
I remember when this song came out cause we lived in Bullitt County, KY and used to take New Cut Rd. heading up towards Louisville. Guy Clark did a version of it too as well as Homegrown Tomatoes and NCR and HG were both big around here back then, lol.
Rebel9668 I lived in Ashland.
Thanks for posting this. One of the forgotten VOICES of country music. Love this song.
GUY CLARK live at Austin Texas . best version ever! go listen now!
The biggest hit of his I ever remember though was Homegrown Tomatoes, lol.
Nice fiddle on this Guy Clark opus.
love this. Bobby hit it right.
One of the best things about America: Traditional Country Music!
I love this song, tells a real American story.
I always thought that this should have been a big hit when it was released. Great rendition of a very good Guy Clark song!
is there such a thing as a bad guy clark song?
Bobby tore this up at the Guy Clark Tribute at The Ryman last week!
I think it was a Guy Clark song.
Guy Clark wrote it.
This song has nothing to do with New Cut Road!!???
As Is. a great album
It sure is a toe tapped
This is one of my all time favourites by Bobby, love that fiddle, great lyrics.
Brilliant
Radio up here didn't play it much when it was released! But I loved it then - and I love it now! The other one I loved off this LP was "Let Him Roll" - a couple of his best as far as I am concerned! Thanks for playing!
I know others have covered this song, but for my money, no one does it better than Bobby Bare!!!
I agree with you and I love this song !
Some kind of a song. Inspired FO SHO.

Thanks for sharing. I never heard it on regular radio, but heard it on Sisius before the combined with XM we lost a lot of good music when that happened. Again thanks
New cut road and the people whom make it? Feelin good bout what we got? Something to play the fiddle for. Looks like we drive to a big tree lined road estate in the country.
Awesome!! Thanks for playing
Right in Louisville Down on New Cutt Road
Great song and great work by Bobby Bare - I love it!
I too am fron so. In. Love this song, used to hear it on 97.5 FM out of Louisville.
Great song you never hear anymore. Was always one of my favorite Bare songs. Probably because I was learning fiddle at the time.
ricky scaggs adding the fiddle & mandolin
Love it!
I heard this on Detroit radio back when country was country. I went out and bought the 45 the first time I heard it.

@unluckylady83 Nobody else had a hit with this song, there may be others who have recorded the song but Bobby Bare is the only artist that had any kind of significant airplay on the radio.
New Cut Road has changed. Not much fiddle playing.

Great recording!
Good lyrics!
What a great song, it could be my favourite Bobby Bare song.
Thanks for posting..Yee-Haaw
I was working on a wood lathe in 1982 when KRAK- Sacramento released it to the public. Then KNCO-Grass Valley picked it up and played it 3 times in one day! I had to turn the lathe off and start dancing--I was afraid I would have an accident on the lathe!!
Too bad, it's a fun song.
Why did I leave that woman,
She never done me wrong,
I went away and left her
for a redhead and a song.
I got no brains,
I got no sense,
I never had no class,
I'M GOIN BACK TO TEXAAS,
and be one more horses ass!
Sorry, I don't have that one :(
From the same album do you have Goin Back to Texas?
I used to live on new cut road...and nowadays it's a great place to find a dime bag...or a bullet
I heard this song for the first time today (I was listening to XM radio) and had to look it up and hear it again...Love it!
I think that Rodney Crowell produced this record too? This is a great piece of music, particularly for 1982!
Yep, a great song. Written by Guy Clark who is one of the finest writers to ever pen a song. If you like this, check out Guy's version, and check out Guy's other work. Bobby always had a fine eye for great songs and great songrwriters (like Guy Clark and Shel Silverstein).
Thanks, wilburscott!!! This is one of my favorites! It didn't get the radio play it deserved back in 1982, and has been very hard to find ever since.
Was that John Hartford on the fiddle? Sounded a lot like him. I've always loved this tune but I never knew who played fiddle on it.
Believe it is Ricky Skaggs!
Hot fiddlin'!
Glad I could help! :)
