Blue Oyster Cult - One Step Ahead Of The Devil Lyrics

You hear the hounds awailin'
As if the mountains groan
You hear the lonesome echo, the telltale clack of stones
You thought you'd get away, but you're never quite alone
You hear the hiss of rattler, maracas on his tail
You hear the lion replyin' to the stalker on your trail

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can

You hear the darkness weeping
For those who fall tonight
That night you lay beside her, for once you almost slept
Until her slim blade glimmered near got you 'fore you leapt
Wish you could leave her livin but that's like guns and rust
You don't want it on your gun, it's just like you and trust

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can

Somewhere, there's a refuge
Somewhere, a place to rest
Somewhere, there's a lover
Someday you'll pass the test

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can

One step ahead of the devil one step
One step ahead of the man one step
You're one step ahead of evil
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can
And you can only run as far as you can

Better to be one step ahead of the devil and you will get the best laughs. But the worst scenario is, that there is too much crowd, who didn't get ahead and those push all to ruins. Will be the end of the world as we know it and that devil gets those best laughs, which we can't hear, cos we'll be dead at that moment. I know i'm melodramatic by saying this. :))) I laughed like one, who was ahead.

I know most of these comments are years old, but to AlbertMondback, I was fortunate enough to spend a Christmas with Mr. Bloom's family at a family get together in Suffern, NY in '92 through a convoluted series of events.  What I thought would be a 15 minute meet and greet turned into a 4 hour, no questions off based enjoyable evening.  My respect grew to unheralded heights.  He was very clear about them being Metallica fans, having gone to a show and being invited backstage with his 14 year old son Ben.  They were thrilled to be there, as thrilled as I was to be doing what I was, hanging with rock royalty.  (My girlfriend at the time was sitting next to a relation who noted I had stars in my eyes, imagine that, sitting next to one of my 5 musical heroes and I had stars in my eyes, didn't see that coming!  The funniest part, I looked way young without a mustache and had seen them 33 times by that point, the cousin that got me there started "quizzing" me about album covers not realizing {or believing} I had been a fan since I was 10.  I got them all right and schooled him on Revolution By Night, lol.  Metallica has let it be known, in no uncertain terms, that BOC was huge in their wheelhouse of influences.  Nothing wrong with being mutually respecting, I'm sure Mr. Bloom was honored knowing how highly they were respected by them.  What's wrong with showing a bit of respect back and jamming in their style a bit?  I don't see the problem that some have with it.  As long as they aren't stealing music, what's the issue? (That's not aimed at you Albert, just that I've noticed a bit of disrespect with some comments over this album and Heaven Forbid over sounding like this band or that).  The reason I'm so late to this issue here is I bought these the days they came out, so I rarely search for BOC except live, I haven't been without a full collection of their discography since '76 when I was still missing the first because I was borrowing my brothers copy.  Maybe people who were born after 1980 should ask their parents their opinions before commenting and those opinions don't count if said parents had 8 tracks of ABBA or KC and The Sunshine Band, so keep that in mind.

Awesome share... wish I could have been there as well!!! THANKS ;-))

What were some of these people in the comments smoking? Metallica? Crue? AC/DC? This doesn't anything like any of those bands! Now Zep and Purple? Yeah, those influences I can definitely hear.

    s.... ....

+sglider This song sounds like Zep with Who back up harmony vocals

    s.... ....

I don't think BOC were influenced by Zep or Purple, considering they have been going since 1967 anyway...

  15. J.... S....

    Keep comin' back.

  16. t.... ....

love BOC, but this pretty much blows. Poor clash between Motley Crue and AC/DC.

  17. n.... ....

    This Band RULES

  18. R.... B....

I think I will be sending this out this year as a stocking stuffer for Christmas.

  19. k.... ....

I always thought they Out-purpled Deep Purple on This track. Eric sounds amazing i think.

  20. e.... ....

Good song . . . they still got some spark left in 'em. But man, I didn't recognize them at first. . .

  21. a.... ....

Dear Boejoe777NaBl, I humbly apologize if I have caused you great offense, and I thank you for your most thoughtful, articulate, and rapier-like reply to my post.

I shall take your educated advice under thoughtful consideration and will review all the options you have so kindly brought forward.

    Kindest regards,
    azmarkus

  22. B.... I....

I just take this great track as it is, on its own merits. I don't try to find possible influences from other bands in it. It is just a great rock song, like so many of BOC's other songs.

  23. E.... ....

    BEST BAND EVER!!! HANDS DOWN!

  24. A.... ....

As far as I know, Bloom's actually a Metallica fan himself (which is kinda funny, since, as you said, Blue Oyster Cult was a significant influence on said band). Also, Bloom's getting pretty old, and I'm not sure he can go as high as he used to, so growls are probably preferable. And they definitely had some pretty heavy songs in their earlier work, as well.

  25. a.... ....

Why oh why does BOC (that would be Bloom) do material like this and try to out-Metallica Metallica when that's what they were never about to begin with? Sadly enough, early BOC was an influence on Metallica, so now BOC-Bloom tries to be hip by imitating Metallica..."Look at us, we can do that too!" Awful.

Bloom just growls, they add some echo and then crank up the tempo a bit and it's such an embarrassing mish-mash. They should have stuck with their strength: melodic-quirky stuff.

    a.... ....

as if metallica has got some patent on a certain sound or riff-- LMA OFF!!!!!

    a.... ....

Ten years later and that comment you made still sounds dumb.
