Blue Oyster Cult - Madness To The Method Lyrics

A rock through a window never comes with a kiss.
Rhyme and a reason never argue with a miss.
There's a time for discussion and a time for a fight.
It's the time in the season for a maniac at night.

There's to be said for a blow to the head.
So come on! Make a show! Turn it on! Let it go!
Put some madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
We want madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
We don't care as long as there's some madness!

The member's only lacking with the stage cologne.
Try to pacify the jackal at the watering hole.
The boys want to mix in with the girls at the bar.
And the train goes away when there's no one in the car.

Babe, is there a mission to destroy your inhibitions?
So come on! Get some show! Hang it out! Rock and roll!
Put some madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
We want madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
We don't care as long as there's some madness!

[Instrumental]

It's a hormone war zone - boys are out for a fight;
Wenches in the trenches on a Saturday night.
Stick it here, stick it there; get it out of sight.
It's the time in the season for the nasty things at night.

Put some madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
We want madness to the method! (We need! We need! We need! We need!)
We need madness to the method! (Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
(Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
(Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
(Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
(Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)
(Revolt! Revolt! Revolt! Revolt!)

[Instrumental]

  13. R.... G....

An underrated song on an underrated album.
BOC created almost totally different sounds for each album reinventing themselves and their music continually while remaining smart and eclectic.
They're my favorite band because of this and I am so glad I was introduced to them at an early age.

  14. M.... C....

Friend asked me to recommend my favorite boc albums. Six months later I am still thinking about it.

  15. J.... C....

Sometimes I'm jealous of my dad's life as he was able to go see this band and was able to listen to there songs as soon as they came out, only been listening to BÖC for a year and it's my favourite band

  16. G.... T....

This is epic and this album is supposed to be the one that sucks..lol. BOC are the greatest band ever....

  17. g.... b....

    sounds alot like triumph

  18. Z.... L....

    Mi banda favorita BOC

  19. R.... L....

Just another great tune from B.O.C

    R.... L....

    There are so many.....

  20. r.... s....

somE bANDS NEveR hAd a HiT On thE RADIo GOVERnmENT MaId sQuASH

  21. K.... P....

    I reapen love this track!

  22. m.... ....

The guitarist plays "many a tear has to fall" from "It's All In The Game" at the end.

  23. m.... ....

Did they really sign their souls over to the devil in blood?

    m.... ....

no, but chathullu might have had something to do with it.

  24. r.... s....

Does this mean I'm certifiably crazy?

  25. r.... s....

Not never answer never works*..no wrong answere here?

  26. R.... ....

This band just has such an effect on me. They were my favorite band after I saw them in 1978 but I went on to other music in 83. I did not know this album existed until 2009. I immediately concluded Perfect Water was a masterpiece but thought the rest of the album was poor. Now I find myself into this and Dancin in the Ruins quite heavily. Amazing band.

    R.... ....

Always loved this song from the first few listens of the album back in 1985 ... it's a sprawling masterpiece from the main man ....

    R.... ....

Yeah it is really a cool song. I also really like Spy in the House of the Night

    R.... ....

@RoeserFan1 When the War Comes is also great....

  27. M.... ....

if this album had a different name it would be revered in the same way as their Fortune album is. overall i think this is a better album than AoF..

  28. R.... ....

was lucky enough to get to see BOC three times, every show was dandy and i really liked the first show in 1977 with the lazer show..killer!

  29. B.... H....

I need and want, BOC always delivers!?! Crazy awesome ;-)

  30. R.... R....

I know we have MP3s and all, but has anyone heard this tune on the radio? How can this NOT be a hit????? How do songs get picked to be hits? I seriously believe it's payola or some jackass just picks songs qat random or something.

I played this song for a girl who doesn't like BOC, and she said so, but this was the 1st song of their that she liked.

  31. A.... ....

Not my album but Excuse me to this song, right here and now its very good
EDIT: It kick some serious butt!!

  32. T.... ....

That St. Cecilia Electra Years collection, both of them combined, is really great. Certainly some great stuff all the way up to the final studio release. I think this one has too much production

  33. C.... P....

The memories only lacking, One of the all time greatest bands, so underrated,in the 80's they were height of their performance culminating in Imaginos. I truly feel sorry for people who have not listened to their albums of that era, guess they were more into makeup and hair, such a pity.

    C.... P....

Saw them in 1989 at the Hammersmith Odeon and it was one of the best rock performances I have ever seen and I have been to gigs since 1970 and seen most of the name bands, the Floyd, Zeppelin ( three times ) and almost stopped bothering in the 80s. Still playing and a new album due in 2020. ' Imaginos ' is a future classic.

  34. H.... K....

Not exactly their best album overall. But this song was always cool. And the ending is pure greatness.

    H.... K....

    Best album for you?

  35. M.... G....

    Soooooooooo underrated!

  36. k.... j....

turn it on we want m
    message 2 the madness

  37. N.... G....

    My desert island band.

    N.... G....

and mine ...... quite happy with the sun, a hammock & a stack of BOC albums.

    N.... G....

    Great piano

  38. s.... ....

A rock through a window never comes with a kiss.

    s.... ....

There's a lot to be said for a blow to the head.

    s.... ....

    MIGHT BE DOOOOOOOOOOOO

  39. s.... ....

"wenches in the trenches"...my favorite lyric. 😂😂😂

    s.... ....

"on a Saturday night". Inspired, & "Pacify the Jackal at the watering hole" but that's BD for you .....

  40. S.... W....

Typically classy Buck tune if quite atypical and meandering in nature. It works. I think the theme is a comment on the dating/bar scene. Anyways it's wonderful stuff from the maestro.

  41. w.... c....

BOC Fan For Life. Saw them live first time in 74.

    w.... c....

    Lucky basterd :'(

  42. K.... I....

My original cassette copy of Club ninja had 'Madness to the method' fade out at the end, and didn't have Howard Stern voice-over on 'When the war comes'...

    K.... I....

Club Ninja definitely had two versions in the early days, I believe one was a UK mix??? I own about 4 discs but I don't know if any of them differ ...

  43. k.... j....

    sonic ok

  44. k.... j....

    Archangel luv u

  45. T.... ....

There's something about BOC that gets me in a creative mood. Every time I listen to them in bulk I start to come up with so many ideas for writing projects.

    T.... ....

Agreed, there music seems to be quite inspiring for fantasy stories to me.

  46. R.... S....

I bought this on holiday at a flea market in florida for $1.99.. (club Ninja) still love it 20 odd years later!

    R.... S....

Try Journey's "Next" album. This song reminds me of that album. No sappy love songs, just good ol progressive rock!

  47. J.... M....

So many great albums! Each with a unique flavor but BOC's singular style.

  48. R.... E....

Such an awesome song!!!! BOC absolutely rocks! Been a fan since '81

    R.... E....

Racine Evans Definitely my favorite from this album. Huge love for Madness.

    R.... E....

    i agree, i've been a fan since 2017

  49. h.... h....

    career of evil ☺☺☺☺

    h.... h....

More importantly now that the wonderful JK (since finding out the girl knows how to Rock !!) has led you to the music of this glorious band, what do you think ???

  50. B.... H....

Totally BAD ASS.......... sophisticated opinion. :)

  51. G.... B....

no Bouchard brothers no Blue Oyster Cult

    G.... B....

+Greg Berry Well, Joe played on this record, so you can't say there were no Bouchards involved. Also, the band was still functioning once they got back together later in the 80s. So, I'm inclined to disagree with you, but they were certainly better with Albert and Joe.

  52. g.... ....

Thanks to the keyboard work, the outro is extraordinarily beautiful and has that progressivish feel which makes this song the most "epic" track of all BOC tunes. I don't like this album like others but this track alone makes the album worthy.

    g.... ....

This song, Perfect Water, and Spy In The House Of The Night. And maybe Dancin' In The Ruins on a good day.

  53. W.... D....

There is BOC and very very far below, everything else. I pity the earthlings that miss out on them.

    W.... D....

In my opinion, this is my 9th favourite band, and I've just been checking them out all day today and this past week, before I only knew the song Don't Fear The Reaper but after hearing Burning For You I decided to check out some others and as of them I've been checking out a lot of their other songs when I can, which is quite a lot.

But no matter what this band creates, in my opinion is not as good as some other bands I've known before this one.

Yes I may not have heard all of their songs but from what I can gather this is a fucking amazing band and pretty much every song I've heard is pretty damm great, it just won't compare to other ones I've known.

    W.... D....

    @Anios Arkhangelisk you already said:
"But no matter what this band creates, in my opinion is not as good as some other bands I've known before this one."
so why not share what is "better" than this.

    W.... D....

@zander herrick you do understand that this is my opinion right?? I also don't understand what you mean about already typing, since my original previous comment was the first time I had actually typed on this video, yes I put my opinion out and my opinion is that this is a very very great band but in my opinion I find that other bands suit me better, if you'd want to know then I can tell you my favourite songs but remember to not compare something so much, just because you think that it is better doesn't mean that your opinion automatically overrides mine.

    W.... D....

@zander herrick I originally made a reference to the person who actually typed the main comment and I just stated my opinion that B.O.C. is my 9th, which it is now my 8th and that In My Opinion I feel that there's other beings that have created music that In My Opinion, I prefer much more over this band.

    In My Opinion remember.

    W.... D....

@Anios Arkhangelisk i think hes just curious what could possibly be better than this

  54. W.... A....

so random this is quoted in "Career of Evil" book by Jk Rowling. Seeing as the title itself is a BOC reference it seems she's really into them.

    W.... A....

+Wil Archer She sent an autographed copy of her book to each of the remaining band members.

    W.... A....

Given this song's subject matter & knowing a bit about how JK thinks I reckon this song in particular is of interest to her ...
It's also musically & lyrically a wonderful song as well of course.

    W.... A....

And it's kind of like told the duck to get up off the chicken?

  55. M.... Z....

    this album rocks

  56. P.... M....

BOC has a very original style, their songs sound like no other band. Very intersting melodically, and Buck Dharma's solos are really well constructed with a great choice of notes, and sound nothing like  the average rock guitarist mindlessly blasting a pentatonic.

    P.... M....

@Pietro Marcello yes, they are/were a great band.

    P.... M....

Well, have you given Ghost a listen? They are quite similar. Check out Ritual and Deus In Absentia for instance.

    P.... M....

@tulllguy Are! my wife and i are going to their 10/6/19 concert in annapolis, md.

    P.... M....

    @Mainzer Girl how was it?

    P.... M....

    Pietro Marcello
I saw them in February 2019. They slayed it
Hard to believe they’ve been touring since 72

  57. D.... N....

I listen to BOC all day every day and night forever.  Always fresh and fantastic, of course on random play.

    D.... N....

+Default Name Awesome input my friend............I couldn't agree more! :)

    D.... N....

+Default Name That has been my method also. And a result. :) Though something else added time to time, but been coming back to BÖC...

  58. C.... R....

here I am again .....a maniac at night

  59. V.... 5....

    My god...WHAT a Song! !!!!

    V.... 5....

    do your homework my friend

  60. d.... s....

whoever thought a biker band would produce a great piano solo like this?

    d.... s....

    biker band?

    d.... s....

+Matthew Randolph You have to admit, Eric looked like a biker for a while. Still kinda does.

    d.... s....

Not to mention Eric used to ride a motorcycle on-stage at concerts sometimes.

    d.... s....

Tommy Zvoncheck produced the piano solo, to the best of my knowledge, and he may not have even been an official member of the band at the time.

    d.... s....

darrel shimmer They're not not a biker band. They're regular long islanders.

  61. d.... m....

    VERY TIGHT

  62. C.... R....

this is a secret jam on this record...I love it

    C.... R....

we need; we need; we need;......again another Buck lead vocal that is just great

  63. c.... f....

it is a mad mad mad world

  64. t.... ....

I bought this in 1986 when it came out.

    t.... ....

    Me too!

  65. S.... C....

They very first terrible idea that started it was Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown. After that the downward spiral just accelerated.

  66. T.... M....

It's a hormone war zone, can't put it any better than that.

  67. s.... ....

I haven't got my original pressing anymore as my ex-wife smashed hell out of it when we split.

  68. s.... ....

I loved this song when I first bought this album many years ago. The ending to the song was awesome, but either it has been remastered or my record player was crap, but it didn't sound anything like this. Has anyone got the original pressing of it or can someone enlighten me as to what happened...

  69. M.... ....

Can you believe I typed that sentiment 4 years ago? Just goes to show you MTViacom don't know their heads from a hole in the ground, It's time someone got REALLY upset enough to do something about it... not talking killing anyone, but force a change of the guard there

  70. J.... A....

Yes they flushed it right down the toilet and it backed up with so many non real fake reality shows that I can't believe it is still on the air

  71. M.... ....

I have a small collection of the full size CD packaging used in stores, until they needed more space and less cardboard, but we have a store here called CHEAPOS and though, not cheap at all, they have all the great audio and vid formats I can see other then HD-DVD which was oddly absent

  72. M.... ....

MTV and VH1 original are not even music as we've known it, growing up with what MTV defined in it's truest sense, I marked 1995 as the MTV deathknell, and I see music across the board suffer since, but MTV and VH1 aren't even a joke anymore, they're irrelevant

    M.... ....

    MTV is dead.

    M.... ....

What I think somebody needs to revive "Night Flight" on USA network.

  73. 1.... ....

early to mid 80s were great but some late 80s and 90s works were good too. I liked some of the bands that were hits in the 80s and could carry over into the 90s like U2. Even better than the real thing.

  74. B.... ....

I have most of BOC's albums up to Club Ninja on vinyl. Not originally. I went to Rhino Records in the early 90's and bought a bunch.Got tired of the cd boxes cutting most of the album picture off. Records are in pretty good shape too.

  75. B.... ....

Les Invisibles. One of my top 5 songs from them.

  76. B.... ....

Late 90's. Aug. 81 to about 85 when they actually showed 'good' rock videos. After that they blew. By the way this song shows the great guitar work that Buck should be known for.

  77. P.... ....

    Amazon, FYE,maybe best but

  78. P.... ....

My fave BOC song is either Flaming Telepaths or Stone of love

    P.... ....

Wow, that's diverse, but with 40-50 great tracks it can be difficult to chose a few ...

  79. b.... ....

We all know MTV sucks, people...what does that have to do with this amazing music?

  80. 1.... ....

Since the late 90s it has been shit. The turn of the millennium turned for the worse :(

  81. g.... ....

Sometimes I wonder why BOC takes up so much of my time. This is a reasons why.

  82. N.... ....

Mierda no puedo creer que haya dejado pasar tanto tiempo sin haber escuchado una banda tan pasada

  83. J.... ....

mtv ruined music. jethro tull, frampton, boc were not pretty boys! (don't kill me boc!). mtv laid music to waste then left the ashes to smolder. they don't even play MUSIC videos now! mtv=the devil!

    J.... ....

They still do play music believe it or not. m I'm looking at the Electronic Program Guide, But I don't see it. MTV has a program in the mornings called "AMTV". They would run 2 1-hour blocks of AMTV. On MTV2, there is "MTV2 Music Mix" from 4:00 to 9:00 weekdays.

  84. B.... I....

Even 0 dislikes is too many for this song.

  85. u.... ....

    yeah it was better then!

  86. J.... P....

@Grm0xlr2xD man you can't forget ASTRONOMY, my fav :) amazing solo performance too. god i love this band

  87. R.... W....

    The piano really kicks ass

  88. G.... :....

    @stashyjon
Well also my favorite BÖC song is Don`t fear the reaper, most than anything is that without that song i may never heard this band.
After Don`t Fear the reaper will be Veteran of the psychic wars(extraterrestrial live solo is fucking awesome), Fireworks, madnees to the method, harvest moon,The vigil, I love the night, then it came the last days of may, transmaniacion MC, The marshall plan, and i could go on and on...
And hello to england too:D i wish y could go in 2012 to london

  89. J.... W....

@Grm0xlr2xD even more annoying when people claim they know of them and you ask what their fave BOC track is, and the say 'Don't Fear The Reaper' and you say and what else, and they can't name any other song by them. That REALLY pisses me off. (and hello Mexico from England)

  90. i.... ....

Anybody know where you can get this on CD?

    i.... ....

get a USB turntable and make them. I know your post was six years ago but replied anyway.

  91. t.... ....

this track is such a fine showcase for the band at this time . . .took me a while to replace my cassette copy which still plays

  92. A.... ....

    Reality?!
MTV is about as real as a "good" boy band.

    A.... ....

MTV is about as real as a rapper who never swears.

  93. L.... A....

This song reminds me of being in art school in Surrey, BC. At Kwantlen College. Totally fun times in '86. The best weed .... ever.

  94. G.... :....

    I fucking love BÖC!
I don´t know why most of the people don´t know this band they are awesome!
I wish i could see them live someday(i live in mexico):(

    G.... :....

i live in turkey, i have nearly no chance... good luck to you anyways :s

    G.... :....

Gatoncho :3 was my first concert in 1979 was 11 yrs old...

  95. i.... ....

    @aintgotnosoul48
I agree 100%. Hard to find now, too.

  96. D.... C....

One of the most under-rated albums by one of the most under-rated bands in history.

  97. M.... ....

@mung559 I just have the standard CD. I want to see the band again but I always refer back to their last DVD. Good stuff to enjoy live BOC anytime, and as Buck stated, he's gotten better over time, with much playing from the 70s to now! Rock on, rock on!

  98. m.... ....

@MetallicBill I've got a bunch of the Imaginos songs pulled up right here on youtube and in a playlist. It is all coming back to me now. It is actually pretty impressive stuff. I remember seeing the blue vinyl LP when it first came out. I should have bought it then I guess.
