Blue Oyster Cult - Debbie Denise Lyrics

She kept the light open, all night long
For me to come home, and sing her my song
Oh Debbie Denise was true to me
She'd wait by the window, so patiently
And I'd come on home with my hair hanging down
She'd pin it up, and softly smile

But I was out rolling with my band
And I was out rolling with my band

I never realized, she was so undone
I didn't suspect she had no life of her own
She was so true but she was a she
She was just there I would just come
Stumbling in she'd show me she'd care
I didn't care cause she was just there

But I was out rolling with my band
And I was out rolling with my band

I wouldn't come home for weeks at a time
She wouldn't accept that she was free
Oh Debbie Denise was true to me
She'd wait by the window so bitterly

Wanting me to come close, I guess I noticed
I couldn't see, so what could I say
That more affection could I show her
I had only one thing on my mind

When I come to her, she'd pin back my hair
And out past the fields out the window I'd stare

Where I was out rolling with my band
I was out rolling with my band

  2. C.... D....

I just realized that this song was about a dog. All these years of listening to it and I never noticed until I shared it with a friend!

  29. J.... R....

Debbie and Denise Frazier twins Goshen New York 1974 taught me how to shine 💜 I wonder if they heard this song?

  30. D.... C....

Hey dumbass kiss isn't a pimple on BOC ass kiss is a no talent bunch of hacks in makeup there not even good musicians both from NY BOC way better

    D.... C....

    right on!

    D.... C....

'So the chicken talk goes..' They both made respectively good tracks!

  31. c.... s....

    Love The Song !!!!!
    R.I.P. Kitties

  32. L.... S....

It took a while but I finally figured out what this song's really about: "Debbie Denise" is not a groupie or his girlfriend... Debbie Denise is his CAT!

    L.... S....

Ashley Valladares the lyrics come from a poem by Patti Smith not Albert. I doubt it’s about a woman of his

    L.... S....

Funny I thought it was his dog but cat makes more sense 😜👍

    L.... S....

    Just figure that out? lol

    L.... S....

No, it’s about his mechanical sheep painted red and black.

    L.... S....

    This describes MY cat!

  33. T.... A....

    great song!

  34. L.... d....

B.O.C. is a better band than Kiss but "Beth" is a better song than "Debbie Denise". Unfortunately, it sounds as though Buck and the boys ran out of ideas when they put this in inspiring song on the otherwise flawless "Agents of Fortune" LP.

    L.... d....

Kiss ain't a pimple on BOCs ass don't even compare the two kiss sucks ass shitty songwriting no talent no depth of feeling in their songs just a bunch of clowns in lame costumes

    L.... d....

While KISS is not nearly as good as BOC, I think that's an unfair assessment. At their best, they broke beyond the clown makeup and cheesy lyrics to produce some good songs, Beth being one of them. They were not the one trick ponies many write them off to be.

    L.... d....

Kiss is a one dimensional band they have no heart or soul their songs are superficial no depth of feeling no real meaning just crap if you like kiss than your just as superficial as they are try listening to yes or rush or Pink Floyd I'm talking real celebral bands real music the kind that makes you think the kind of lyrics that you embrace kiss doesn't have any of that to offer wake the fuck up and get on with your life

    L.... d....

Look fucktard, never assume anything. I'm a fan of Rush, I have several Pink Floyd albums, I already pointed out that I'm a fan of BOC, so don't fucking assume I don't appreciate "cerebral bands". At the same time, I can appreciate KISS's finer moments... and they did have some finer moments, even if you can't see beyond the stage personas to see that. KISS is not a great band, but they're not one dimensional either.

  35. T.... J....

Great album, and love this power pop track.
    Miss Albert in the band.
Was thinking, same topic, but years before "Beth".

    T.... J....

+Jeffrey Devine Beth came out around this time. Some of the traditional heavy metal bands wanted to show a more sophisticated mellower side. I like this song and Albert's singing.

  36. D.... ....

    Classic.
Shame these old rockers have to carry on until none are left, yet still use the band name.
Such a shame and so sad.....

    D.... ....

As long as Buck Dharma and Eric Bloom are around they are still legit!

    D.... ....

I'm not sad at all. I've seen them a dozen times with no Bouchards, and nearly every concert was great. Buck, Jules, Richie are a thrill to watch. Just wish Eric still had the pipes so we could hear Astronomy, ETI, Veterans, etc.

    D.... ....

    Your statement is beyond silly.

  37. A.... L....

This song has great melodies and guitar licks. So soothing this song

  38. A.... L....

Not a weak moment on AGENTS OF FORTUNE. True confessions is bordering on weak, but I kinda like it

    A.... L....

+Alan Lloyd - respectfully disagree. I absolutely LOVE True Confessions. The piano riff, Allen's voice, the lyrics, "...Stand in the doorway in a jealous rage, drag myself 'cross her wild terrain/Naked exposed, like wine, like a rose/Perfect to strangers, imperfect at love/Naked exposed, like Fine Rock and Roll, perfect to strangers, imperfect at love" Yeah, my friend, that's fine rock and roll

    A.... L....

True Confessions was Rolling Stone Magazines favorite track on the album.I grew to love it. Kind of a Stones feel to it.

  39. A.... P....

Debbie Denise! this is one of my top feel bad to feel good songs!

  40. K.... P....

Blue Oyster Cult is from space.

    K.... P....

    +Jack Peterson Because logic.

    K.... P....

    WELL DID YOU NOTICE

    K.... P....

    Uh duh....

    K.... P....

I love that. You are right

  41. b.... ....

I think Patti wrote this about a dog because at the time Henry Gross of Sha Na a had a hit called Shannon and everyone thought it was about a GF dying but it was about his dog dying so Patti decided to write lyrics as obtuse about a similar subject.

  42. 1.... ....

I love the melody. What is this song about?

  43. b.... ....

    Love this song.

  44. m.... g....

this song sucks!!! much better don't fear the reaper or e.t.i.,this song spoil the entire album

    m.... g....

this comment sucks!!! much better all the other comments, this comment spoil the entire thread

Goddamn, even as a parody of your comment, that looks stupid. Proper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Learn them before you post again. Also, try to develop some actual musical taste.

    m.... g....

@atimnie One of the most beautiful and clever replies I've ever read on YouTube.

  45. W.... ....

    That one is kinda weird.

    W.... ....

    True dat, young lad.

  46. R.... B....

One of the great, intangible qualities of this song is how you feel you're entering the story 2/3 of the way through it after the first line lands.

  47. b.... c....

One of my favorite songs by these guys.

  48. S.... ....

The name of the poem may be from Patti but the song is about his dog.

  49. K.... ....

    try deadline

  50. K.... ....

Well, i've watched every video on this channel now, awesome music well worth my time

  51. b.... ....

I think Patti Smith co-wrote this song

    b.... ....

She did and sang on some tracks as a backing vocalist =-)

  52. c.... ....

    ......the bass......

  53. S.... ....

I jammed this tape in high school in my first car... I love this tune.

  54. W.... F....

I love the melotron, guitar and the lyrics. A wondrous gem.

    W.... F....

You are correct. It truly is.I also enjoy it very much.

  55. b.... ....

    ...What actual music sounds like...
Love Al's voice on this too.

  56. b.... ....

One thing that makes great music is craft and these guys were true masters of it.

  57. A.... S....

When I started discovering BÖC I was disappointed when I didn't find songs that sounded like "(Don' Fear) The Reaper".. But quite fast I started to like song after song after song and because of the band's diversity I today hold them as a favorite band. I'd say that about 90% of all their songs are pure quality.. the other 10% is still decent but maybe a little too repetitous (talking about some songs on "The Revultion by Night" for example).

  58. b.... ....

    @StonefieldJim4
Wonderfully put-right on the money.Starting with this record people could see this band was more Beatles than Black Sabbath. They could always handle any style expertly and with great creativity. How this band isn't considered an all time great is beyond me.

    b.... ....

Yeah their record company wanted them to be America's Black Sabbath they said no. A great decision =-)

    b.... ....

It is with people who think independently.

  59. w.... ....

    @USAGlobalVideoCorp
I'm the same age as you guys who remember this record and the band so well. But I've got to confess- I'm first hearing most of these songs for the first time. I was heavily into music back then- the Joni Mitchell, Dylan singer-songwriter genre, progressive rock, and later punk and new wave, but I really only knew the handful of BOC tracks that were played a lot on radio.
What a talented and versatile band. The songwriting, as you note, is top notch.

    w.... ....

Man you missed out, so many great songs by Blue Oyster Cult

  60. N.... ....

Right on all counts JRush. You must be near 50 like me. I miss Albert and Joe. They're in Blue Coupe these days. If they ever come to Long Island...

  61. J.... W....

I care. Extraordinary album. The only 'metal' band who 'got' the post-punk AND singer-songwriter sensibilities of the mid to late 70s. Arguably, the most under-rated rock album ever made. A genuinely authentic and emotionally honest record. A wonderful record, and one that moved me away from 'genres' to cultivating an ear for great songwriting.@mrpar02

  62. K.... ....

holy crap. This has to be listened to with headphones

  63. U.... ....

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. So classic of a melody, and sung very sincerely. This song single-handedly changed my opinion of BOC way up a million notches. Listen on headphones a must. Love the Mellotron track. Love this tune. can't stress that enough. I wish bands where still making music like this, I'd be a happier man for certain. "I was out rollin' with my band!!" FANTASTIC...

  64. a.... ....

@mrpar02 considering how so many artists cite patti smith as a major influence, it says a lot about how big BOC was at this time. and "agents of fortune" is far and away my favorite - it is their masterpiece, with such a diversity of music - from near metal punk (tattoo vampire) to charming ballad (denise).

  65. m.... ....

@auzoso I have heard, more than once that Lanier and Smith were a long term couple that kind of flew under the radar.

    m.... ....

    They were an adorable couple!

  66. M.... ....

    Great album.... Perfect album...

  67. a.... ....

@mrpar02 Weren't Patti Smith and Allen Lanier dating around this time?

    a.... ....

    That was never proven

    a.... ....

@Rackball Jones Umm, I think it was... they were together seven years, kind of hard to fake!

    a.... ....

False history, good friends with the whole band Pattie was and is.

  68. T.... ....

Strangely, this is the song that stayed the most in my memory from that album. It sounds very inspired.

  69. J.... D....

@brobearto for those who think BOC was ever >Metal< the songs that they did that were Metal were a rare item.. they were rock folk jazz fusion

    J.... D....

More like progressive rock, they are musicians before their time

  70. h.... ....

Classic BOC.....Of course the whole album was AMAZING.... Pretty hard to find
better lyrics, melody, and of course cow bells...... Thanks for posting song.

  71. K.... ....

    @phree2b ?!?

  72. D.... P....

my fav boc song! boc rules!

  73. J.... K....

this song is like one of those songs that could be played in a movie like Blow.... only the, "I was out rollin with ma band" part

  74. k.... ....

@Drizzlerman Yeah, because you know when you were born dictates your behavior for the rest of your life, damn that sucks, wish science could cure it. Oh look, my wife had twins, therefore their behavior can be mapped with astrology. How stupid to think that we make our own choices - the twins will act the same way! Wait what, my horoscope is off - that must be MY fault.... I must explain how the horoscope didn't match up because of XYZ reason.

  75. t.... ....

@Sasperillasquatch True. Hard rock is a much more accurate label.

  76. l.... ....

@Sasperillasquatch check out what was a double live ALBUM On Your Feet or ON your Knees, than think again about what is or was heavy metal.

  77. B.... H....

I think Patti Smith wrote the lyrics.

    B.... H....

    She did.

  78. D.... ....

@Drizzlerman Besides his Scorpio nature makes him possessive

  79. D.... ....

I like how the first record the third and this one have this 'light at the end of the tunnel' vibe with the song choice being a softer, light, soothing style unlike much of the previous songs on the record. But I also like the unsettling, haunting, creepy closers like on T&M, & Spectres. Also I feel after their fifth studio album their material became less effective with a scraping of solid tracks here and there. But they had it down on their first 5 albums.

  80. D.... ....

Albert is his buddy, not yours.

  81. g.... ....

Did you meet Buck Dharma? He doesn't seem like he could ever be mean. Just my gut feelings, I've never met any of them.

  82. T.... S....

sorry, love the album. say what you want

  83. T.... S....

That's real unfortunate. You think he would learn.

  84. T.... S....

You can disagree. For me the album on the whole was not as good as Spectres, Fire, Cultosaurs, Mirrors and Secret Treaties

  85. s.... ....

PLEASE PLAY THIS FOR YOUR KIDS!!!

  86. T.... S....

I'm definitely sorry to hear that he did that to you. I like Eric Bloom, but there's something inside of me for years that said he's probably not a very nice guy. Maybe I'm wrong.

    T.... S....

    no you're right

  87. T.... S....

It wasn't one of their best.

  88. T.... S....

That's unfortunate. Was this back in the 70s? 80s?

  89. T.... S....

What did he do to you and when did he do it?

  90. H.... ....

    Why not?

  91. K.... ....

The lyrics are her's. They're actually about a lesbian who has a crush on a straight woman. Albert Bouchard said one time the original refrain was "I was out rolling with my man", but he insisted on changing it to "rolling with my band" for slightly obvious reasons.

  92. J.... ....

    never like this album

  93. N.... ....

I'm sure Bloom will be more agreeable to you these days. BOC was on top of the world back then. These days, the crowds are fewer. With that comes humility.

    N.... ....

Seen them recently. Smaller venues but packed and rocking. And still sounding amazing

    N.... ....

Saw them recently they haven't missed a beat.

  94. n.... ....

Did you learn from it ?

  95. s.... ....

sad song. reminds me of a girlfriend i once had - she was really sweet and i treated her like shit.

  96. I.... ....

yeah and i was out rolling with my band :) awesome.

  97. m.... ....

The name comes from a poem by Patti Smith, in case anyone cares.

    m.... ....

I do care, and I'll be looking it up right away. Thanks!
