B.O.C. is a better band than Kiss but "Beth" is a better song than "Debbie Denise". Unfortunately, it sounds as though Buck and the boys ran out of ideas when they put this in inspiring song on the otherwise flawless "Agents of Fortune" LP.

While KISS is not nearly as good as BOC, I think that's an unfair assessment. At their best, they broke beyond the clown makeup and cheesy lyrics to produce some good songs, Beth being one of them. They were not the one trick ponies many write them off to be.

Kiss is a one dimensional band they have no heart or soul their songs are superficial no depth of feeling no real meaning just crap if you like kiss than your just as superficial as they are try listening to yes or rush or Pink Floyd I'm talking real celebral bands real music the kind that makes you think the kind of lyrics that you embrace kiss doesn't have any of that to offer wake the fuck up and get on with your life

Look fucktard, never assume anything. I'm a fan of Rush, I have several Pink Floyd albums, I already pointed out that I'm a fan of BOC, so don't fucking assume I don't appreciate "cerebral bands". At the same time, I can appreciate KISS's finer moments... and they did have some finer moments, even if you can't see beyond the stage personas to see that. KISS is not a great band, but they're not one dimensional either.

+Jeffrey Devine Beth came out around this time. Some of the traditional heavy metal bands wanted to show a more sophisticated mellower side. I like this song and Albert's singing.

I'm not sad at all. I've seen them a dozen times with no Bouchards, and nearly every concert was great. Buck, Jules, Richie are a thrill to watch. Just wish Eric still had the pipes so we could hear Astronomy, ETI, Veterans, etc.

One thing that makes great music is craft and these guys were true masters of it.

When I started discovering BÖC I was disappointed when I didn't find songs that sounded like "(Don' Fear) The Reaper".. But quite fast I started to like song after song after song and because of the band's diversity I today hold them as a favorite band. I'd say that about 90% of all their songs are pure quality.. the other 10% is still decent but maybe a little too repetitous (talking about some songs on "The Revultion by Night" for example).

Wonderfully put-right on the money.Starting with this record people could see this band was more Beatles than Black Sabbath.They could always handle any style expertly and with great creativity.How this band isn't considered an all time great is beyond me.

Yeah their record company wanted them to be America's Black Sabbath they said no. A great decision =-)

I'm the same age as you guys who remember this record and the band so well. But I've got to confess- I'm first hearing most of these songs for the first time. I was heavily into music back then- the Joni Mitchell, Dylan singer-songwriter genre, progressive rock, and later punk and new wave, but I really only knew the handful of BOC tracks that were played a lot on radio.
What a talented and versatile band. The songwriting, as you note, is top notch.

I care. Extraordinary album. The only 'metal' band who 'got' the post-punk AND singer-songwriter sensibilities of the mid to late 70s. Arguably, the most under-rated rock album ever made. A genuinely authentic and emotionally honest record. A wonderful record, and one that moved me away from 'genres' to cultivating an ear for great songwriting.@mrpar02

@mrpar02 considering how so many artists cite patti smith as a major influence, it says a lot about how big BOC was at this time. and "agents of fortune" is far and away my favorite - it is their masterpiece, with such a diversity of music - from near metal punk (tattoo vampire) to charming ballad (denise).

@auzoso I have heard, more than once that Lanier and Smith were a long term couple that kind of flew under the radar.

I like how the first record the third and this one have this 'light at the end of the tunnel' vibe with the song choice being a softer, light, soothing style unlike much of the previous songs on the record. But I also like the unsettling, haunting, creepy closers like on T&M, & Spectres. Also I feel after their fifth studio album their material became less effective with a scraping of solid tracks here and there. But they had it down on their first 5 albums.

The lyrics are her's. They're actually about a lesbian who has a crush on a straight woman. Albert Bouchard said one time the original refrain was "I was out rolling with my man", but he insisted on changing it to "rolling with my band" for slightly obvious reasons.

I'm sure Bloom will be more agreeable to you these days. BOC was on top of the world back then. These days, the crowds are fewer. With that comes humility.
