Lol, I went to see them back in February it had been ten years since I had last seen them live and I went with my two best friends that I went with ten years earlier. It was an amazing night. I completely lost it when they played Golden Age of Leather, the Virgil and She's as Beautiful as a Foot.. I never expected them to play that track. They started with Dr Music.. It was insane.

Well, whenever I go on a YouTube music binge... I play this song a few times.... Bought the vinyl way back then ... About a week after its release...

Another one of those astounding songs that makes "Spectres" one of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult albums. I bought this album when I was 12 and my mom even loved this song (along with "I Love The Night") and she was not a rocker by any stretch of the imagination. I remember her commenting several times over the years that lyrically BOC sounded like "an intelligent group of guys."

Right on Steven. I like your description 'quirky ballad' and must agree. Don't know how Buck or Bloom would have done on these vocals... but this is magnificent. When I bought this back in '77 on 8-track... I was always wondering who did the 'wandering warble' here. Not perfect pitch... yet befits the song perfectly.

Jay, all I can add is that Richard Meltzer had given Albert some lyrics at the time he had moved from New York to California. Al says he felt he was lonely out there & he made the song about "loneliness". There was a TV show called "Death Valley Days" that the title was based on. Meltzer says "I think was my favorite of all the ones I gave them".
It's a typically lovely, moody & well thought out BOC gem ...

Absolutely, Steven. It's ironic that a perhaps 'not likely to succeed' number turned out so brilliantly well. Meltzer indeed had some prophetic foresight here as to potential. The barren desert mystique and the lonely languid pining for a woman of memory... makes for yet another top notch blend in the BÖC catalogue. Loved it since I first unwrapped that virgin 8-track tape which miraculously survived into the mid-90s. (have the vinyl to this day, however).

interesting point, John.  I've always wondered the same thing.  how can so many people just simply ignore and don't recognize the genius of this band.  it is so great to be able to see them on occasion.  they usually come here to Minnesota at least once a year.

Cheryl, I have shook my head for 39 years now on that point. What I do hear in BOC that only a relatively small number of music fans also get?? They really couldn't be anymore brilliant in any way to my ears.

Dont kid yourself, DSOTM is far and away the greatest achievement in modern music history. You may personally prefer this album, but you cannot deny DSOTMs impact. BOC is underrated as hell and in my opinion the best American band but Pink Floyd is the cream of the crop.

Mystical magic. Haunting and poetic. One of there best.

This song is stunning.  Profoundly beautiful while retaining some underlying guitar menace.  Pure genius.  If you can hear and think, you love BOC.

One of about 6 stunning songs on this album .. just sublime. BOC were in a rich vein here especially the Bouchards & Buck ... & a few of us lucky people get the full experience of this great songwriting & execution ... nothing has ever sounded better to my ears than prime BOC ... absolutely nothing.

They just got confused and disorientated when they were confronted with real music from America's finest rock band ..... it can happen .. poor, sad, little *******.

Somehow through the years, I have misplaced or lost this gem of an album. Now as I sit here and listen to all these great tracks, why were so many critics jumping Blue Oyster Cult's hind-end saying this album lacked in so many ways and that their effort on 'Spectres' was lackluster. I mean c'mon what were they smoking when they sit down to listen to this album. Never understood the criticism on this album. I am in agreement with Blue Oyster Cult fans everywhere. This album is a must in any vinyl collection.

I know it's been a bit since your post, but this album kept me alive in my teens (aka the 70's) and now the 2010's having lost my only child. Were it not for this album, I would be pushing up daisies. It's this musicality, the awesomeness of it, that keeps one foot moving in front of the other, cancer be damned. Some day, when I can eat food again, my palate may improve, but I need me some Spectres to survive.

Albert's vocals, along with Buck's - gave/give BOC the depth over most other bands on all their albums to 1982 - and the songs Albert and Joe took to lead are some of the best in the entire BOC cannon. Long life to these - Eric will still lead on most.

Great stuff.  Spectres was considered a misfire but I love it and listen to it as much as any of their first 5 studio LPs -- all classics.  Not to mention the live ones....

This is my favorite album by far.  This is my favorite song, too lol.  Such a cool song. 

@Duke Byron My all time favorite is Secret Treaties, but Spectres, Mirrors and Some Enchanted Evening are way up there in my book.

For me, I knew Specres was great just by looking at the exceedingly cool album cover. One mystery after another to unlock, just like the song list.
