Blue Oyster Cult - Death Valley Nights Lyrics

Bleached by the sun
And scorched by the moon
If I make it 'til tomorrow noon I'm leaving

'Tween the horror of space
And the terror of time
My heart in crystal down the line I'm screaming

What I need is a kiss from you babe
Before it's hangover time
What I need is some love from you babe
Before this stampede arrives

Desolate landscape
Storybook bliss
My darling, let me tell you this - it's crazy

Hell of a memory
Is a heaven of pain
Snow is cold but so is rain please save me

What I need is a kiss from you babe
Before it's hangover time
What I need is some love from you babe
Before this stampede arrives

Oh babe
What I need kiss from you babe
Before it's hangover time
Babe
What I need love from you babe
Before this stampede arrives

Babe
What I need death valley nights
Babe babe
What I need death valley nights
Babe
What I need I need you death valley nights
Before I lose my mind

I need you
What I need death valley nights
What I need To run away death valley nights
Get away What I need Outer space death valley nights
Just run away What I need I need you death valley nights
What I need I need you death valley nights
What I need I need you death valley nights I need you
What I need

  7. S.... W....

For some of us lucky people this is a deeply moving, stunning and unique song .... i've no idea what other people hear here (thank goodness) ....

    S.... W....

All those things and more Steven. And like many other BOC tunes, it defies categorization. What genre is this? To me that is unanswerable, and that is a good thing.

  8. S.... ....

One of many genius works by 5 of the greatest minds in Rock History!

  9. G.... T....

This is the perfect song.. Unbelievable talent on display here. Everything about this song is perfect.

    G.... T....

It's a work of genius, indeed.

    G.... T....

RoeserFan1 . I was listening to this track when I took off from Tenerife Soutb airport amd the sun was setting behind Moumt Teide. It was like a religious experience.

  12. G.... T....

This is officially the BEST SONG EVER!

    G.... T....

I'd agree Graham, but for me it's tied for first with about 20 other BOC songs!

    G.... T....

@RoeserFan1 . Yeah, I know what you mean. Lol, I went to see them back in February it had been ten years since I had last seen them live and I went with my two best friends that I went with ten years earlier. It was an amazing night. I completely lost it when they played Golden Age of Leather, the Virgil and She's as Beautiful as a Foot.. I never expected them to play that track. They started with Dr Music.. It was insane.

    G.... T....

Well, whenever I go on a YouTube music binge... I play this song a few times.... Bought the vinyl way back then ... About a week after its release...
This is my favorite on the album with Nosferatu the second.

  13. m.... s....

The whole band is weaponized with talent.

  14. Z.... R....

wish this would go on for longer, always makes me ready for more sweet rock

  19. M.... R....

Better than Dark Side of The Moon? By all means yes. Floyd is coma music

  20. M.... R....

    Nothing is better than BOC

  21. r.... s....

late 70's-used to get off work at midnight or past. Played "Spectres" on cassette while driving home through the almost deserted streets of the city. Fireworks, I Love The Night, Death Valley Nights. Perfect...

  22. e.... ....

I always dug this album's acoustics, haunting reverb etc.

  23. L.... R....

I've loved this song from the moment I heard it so many years ago. Such plaintive yearning makes my heart flutter. Great upload!

  24. J.... C....

What’s this song about, great song tho

    Love It

  29. l.... ....

One of my most favorite songs of all time! easily my favorite BOC song.

  30. D.... M....

Blue Oyster Cult deserves 2 spaces in the hall of fame..Cultasaurus Erectus and Spectres alone.. Astronomy.. so many.. such a unique band!!

  32. K.... S....

I just love this band's sound.

  33. W.... M....

I'd like to hear I Love the night

  34. C.... D....

Another one of those astounding songs that makes "Spectres" one of my favorite Blue Oyster Cult albums. I bought this album when I was 12 and my mom even loved this song (along with "I Love The Night") and she was not a rocker by any stretch of the imagination. I remember her commenting several times over the years that lyrically BOC sounded like "an intelligent group of guys."

    C.... D....

The thinking man's, and moms, rock band.

  35. r.... s....

    MY FAVORITE DILEMMA&

  36. T.... F....

They should put this song on the next season of stranger things.

  37. h.... c....

BOC, one of the most criminally underrated bands ever.just a big fan.aquired taste i guess.

    h.... c....

Yes for people with exceptional taste & brains usually ...... :)

    h.... c....

All underground rock bands are always underrated. The pop music people control what receives recogniztion. Look & hear the filth & garbage today. If one of these modern day disgusting fat pig Americans heard BLUE OYSTER CULT. The Freaky bastard. Would shoot himself or end up in a mental ward

    h.... c....

@David Vance Are you kidding me? Nicki Minaj and Lil Pump are the two most talented artists of this generation.

Justin Bieber should do a cover of this song with Beyonce.

  49. R.... ....

    7 notes at 3:06 - heart stopping

    R.... ....

Those are the moments (also hear Les Invisibles at about 2:07 ? also the The Vigil etc, etc) that set BOC apart from nearly every other rock band on the planet .. the genius augmentations that they knew were right to throw in to a song ...

    K.... B....

I've been listening since may 78' when I first seen them in W. Germany , fantastic show to say the least, fan ever since

  60. J.... J....

Trivia question: Who was the vocalist on this one?

    J.... J....

Right on Steven. I like your description 'quirky ballad' and must agree. Don't know how Buck or Bloom would have done on these vocals... but this is magnificent. When I bought this back in '77 on 8-track... I was always wondering who did the 'wandering warble' here. Not perfect pitch... yet befits the song perfectly.

    J.... J....

"Before the stampede arrives" ... outstanding.

    J.... J....

Jay, all I can add is that Richard Meltzer had given Albert some lyrics at the time he had moved from New York to California. Al says he felt he was lonely out there & he made the song about "loneliness". There was a TV show called "Death Valley Days" that the title was based on. Meltzer says "I think was my favorite of all the ones I gave them".
It's a typically lovely, moody & well thought out BOC gem ...

    J.... J....

Absolutely, Steven. It's ironic that a perhaps 'not likely to succeed' number turned out so brilliantly well. Meltzer indeed had some prophetic foresight here as to potential. The barren desert mystique and the lonely languid pining for a woman of memory... makes for yet another top notch blend in the BÖC catalogue. Loved it since I first unwrapped that virgin 8-track tape which miraculously survived into the mid-90s. (have the vinyl to this day, however).

  61. d.... f....

    fuck you

    J.... B....

@Steven Wilkinson darling, let me tell you this, It's crazy.

    J.... B....

I believe it's scorched, _scorched by the moon_

  67. g.... ....

Fucking beautiful and absolutely rocking track, as are most of Blue Oyster Cult's offerings... Killer riffing, sometime subtle, always on point! Thank you Buck Dharma. Thank you BOC. Killer music always gents! So many memories..

    g.... ....

Mr Dharma certainly shows initiative with his work.

    g.... ....

Could not agree with you more.

  68. b.... ....

    Brilliant

  69. A.... H....

What i need... is a kiss from you babe.

  70. S.... ....

Just can't get enough of this.

  71. J.... S....

One of my first 8-tracks with a set of Tenna mindblower speakers! And then in 79 I got to see these guys live! Wow!

  72. J.... M....

Kinda love the fact so few truly understand how amazing BOC is!

    J.... M....

John Meloy I know exactly what you are saying, but in a way it pisses me off that ppl ignore this talented group of musicians. they are playing in Northfield Ohio this month and I'm gonna be there. one hr away from me in PA. Too bad all the originals can't be there. RIP Allen Lanier.

    J.... M....

interesting point, John.  I've always wondered the same thing.  how can so many people just simply ignore and don't recognize the genius of this band.  it is so great to be able to see them on occasion.  they usually come here to Minnesota at least once a year.

    J.... M....

Cheryl, I have shook my head for 39 years now on that point. What I do hear in BOC that only a relatively small number of music fans also get?? They really couldn't be anymore brilliant in any way to my ears.

    J.... M....

Thankfully we were born with functional ears and good taste!

  73. J.... R....

Fucking killer song for all occasions.....and I'm not just saying that cause I'm wasted. Been listening to it for over 20yrs and will continue to do so

    J.... R....

What you need is some BOC before it's hangover time.

    J.... R....

    +Blaargon you right

  74. t.... s....

Spectres is better than Dark Side of the Moon.

    t.... s....

DIP SHIT6000 ...... "the sane party did this album sell 45 fucking million albums like DSOTM did let me answer that for you (no it didn't)" Whoopie do.. The Spice Girls sold millions of records.. So what? Idiot. ..

    t.... s....

Graham .. Nick Drake sold about 5000 albums in his lifetime & Ed Sheran must be around 100 million sales now? (& he's still here).. kinda puts the sales argument into the perspective it deserves, Nick had more talent in his toenail .... for some of us this album is far more interesting, well written & well rounded than DSOTM, as good as that was & in spite of it's reputation ....

    t.... s....

10 albums on a desert island and spectures would be in there along with wish you were here led zep 1

    t.... s....

Dont kid yourself, DSOTM is far and away the greatest achievement in modern music history. You may personally prefer this album, but you cannot deny DSOTMs impact. BOC is underrated as hell and in my opinion the best American band but Pink Floyd is the cream of the crop.

    t.... s....

Ive come to the beleif its depends on what mood your in lately mines the final cut YMMV if asked for ten albums to take to deserted island what would you pick after divorce and loosing kids vs. Just fell in love ? Mabey my DSOM album is wore out idk and i still think WYWH is a better album

  75. g.... ....

Yo Blue Oyster Cultist, what a killer choice! I love this track, and the rest of this album. Great stuff. Especially this track + "Nosferatu", "Golden Age of Leather" and "I love the fucking night!" Thanks for posting!

    g.... ....

I agree gel.  Those are the top four songs on this album.  And the other songs are great too.

    g.... ....

@RoeserFan1 Fireworks is also awesome. :D

    g.... ....

Roger that Graham. Fireworks has some of Buck's most wonderous guitar tones.

    g.... ....

Yup, Buck makes his guitar sing on that track, again... Lol. Buck Dharma: AKA, The greatest guitarist ever... True Story!

  76. T.... A....

  78. C.... N....

Mystical magic. Haunting and poetic. One of there best.

  79. R.... ....

This song is stunning.  Profoundly beautiful while retaining some underlying guitar menace.  Pure genius.  If you can hear and think, you love BOC.

    R.... ....

    Equally as great

    R.... ....

One of about 6 stunning songs on this album .. just sublime. BOC were in a rich vein here especially the Bouchards & Buck ... & a few of us lucky people get the full experience of this great songwriting & execution ... nothing has ever sounded better to my ears than prime BOC ... absolutely nothing.

    R.... ....

    Well said

    R.... ....

They've been my feavorite band since '72

    R.... ....

Steven Wilkinson ..". nothing has ever sounded better to my ears than prime BOC ... absolutely nothing." Agreed, theye were out on there own.. Brilliant.

  80. E.... K....

great song, great album, great guitar, great theme, great production, great ...great, great, etc..etc..etc

  81. k.... j....

watch  out   looking  4   some/   found  it @!

  82. L.... D....

    "Desolate landscape, storybook bliss..."
Speaking of books and bliss, Career of Evil, chapter 26 anyone?

    L.... D....

    please enlighten me

    L.... D....

@garrett watson Career of Evil is a book written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith that has BOC references in it.

    L.... D....

    @SkeletronPrime655 ty ty <3

    L.... D....

    Oh, yeah.

  83. K.... R....

The fact that there are 5 dislikes... just give me a moment....

    K.... R....

They just got confused and disorientated when they were confronted with real music from America's finest rock band ..... it can happen .. poor, sad, little *******.

  84. 4.... ....

Somehow through the years, I have misplaced or lost this gem of an album. Now as I sit here and listen to all these great tracks, why were so many critics jumping Blue Oyster Cult's hind-end saying this album lacked in so many ways and that their effort on 'Spectres' was lackluster. I mean c'mon what were they smoking when they sit down to listen to this album. Never understood the criticism on this album. I am in agreement with Blue Oyster Cult fans everywhere. This album is a must in any vinyl collection.

    4.... ....

they jammed , plain and simple

    4.... ....

One of the 1st albums I listened to as a young teenager with my late older brother ,,, he had such a awesome stereo system and we would crank this album into oblivion ,,, man I miss him so much ,, thank you Jeffrey for allowing me to tag along with you growing up

    4.... ....

Four years later and your comment is still true.

    4.... ....

Spectres was best album by the Blue cult

    4.... ....

I know it's been a bit since your post, but this album kept me alive in my teens (aka the 70's) and now the 2010's having lost my only child. Were it not for this album, I would be pushing up daisies. It's this musicality, the awesomeness of it, that keeps one foot moving in front of the other, cancer be damned. Some day, when I can eat food again, my palate may improve, but I need me some Spectres to survive.

  85. H.... &....

Between the horror of space, and the terror of time.

    H.... &....

+ Sam Yarbrough Jr It's lyrics like that which got me into BOC in the first place.

    H.... &....

my heart in crystal, down the line

    H.... &....

    I'm screaming.....

  86. S.... S....

one of my favorite BOC tunes

  87. J.... ....

The vocals are kinda weak in this song..

    J.... ....

    +Oceanmachine27 Precisely!

    J.... ....

heard it live in Indianapolis in 1978...IT WAS AMAZING!

    J.... ....

Albert's vocals, along with Buck's - gave/give BOC the depth over most other bands on all their albums to 1982 - and the songs Albert and Joe took to lead are some of the best in the entire BOC cannon. Long life to these - Eric will still lead on most.

    J.... ....

    You nailed it Anna!

  88. P.... ....

This is one hell of a ballad

    P.... ....

    It's not a ballad

    P.... ....

Quote from Martin Popoff's BOC reference book "third track was a somber, stealth-like Ballad". It's quirky, it's BOC but i've always thought of it as a ballad as well.

  89. A.... T....

BOC belongs in the hall of fame!!! Green day? give me a break, Death valley nights, Astronomy, Cities on Flames Dominance and submission? and those are just Albert's songs I don't even want to list the other members songs,Boc R u ready too rock?!!!!

    A.... T....

@Penigan They hate America. And they're spoiled snot nosed kids that think socialism is the answer, which always leads to communism.

    A.... T....

@Penigan Yeah, I don't think they are Communist. They sell alot of merchandise and tickets, and are multimillionaires. Those annoying little bubble gum Pop punks love their Capitalism.
That being said, aside from covering Working Class Hero, I can't say I understand either. Lluj7 Pop

    A.... T....

@Kirk Hill What an idiot. Pick up a book once in awhile and stay away from Fox 'News.' Don't believe things you read on Farcebook.

    A.... T....

Wait. Green day is in the R&R hall of fame and Blue Oyster Cult is not? I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

    A.... T....

Celestial the Queen, very very interesting song

  90. R.... T....

Great stuff.  Spectres was considered a misfire but I love it and listen to it as much as any of their first 5 studio LPs -- all classics.  Not to mention the live ones....

    R.... T....

This is my favorite album by far.  This is my favorite song, too lol.  Such a cool song.

    R.... T....

@Duke Byron My all time favorite is Secret Treaties, but Spectres, Mirrors and Some Enchanted Evening are way up there in my book.

    R.... T....

For me, I knew Specres was great just by looking at the exceedingly cool album cover. One mystery after another to unlock, just like the song list.

    R.... T....

    My favorite Album of theirs

  91. E.... J....

Don't you think BOC's songs are better than Beatles and Rolling Stones.

    E.... J....

Beatles stole American music & sold it back to us. They are just another pop band to me. Blue Cult came out with great songs

    E.... J....

It's not really the same era or genre

    E.... J....

That's a hard sell but they did crank out amazing tunes. Buck is without a doubt one of my top 5 guitar players though. Takes me back...

    E.... J....

@Robert Martin That's early Beatles. Look at most things from Revolver to their breakup and there is some of the best albums, songs, and lyrics ever written.

    E.... J....

@Maria Quiet Have you thought about getting laid?

  92. J.... H....

blu cult is right , Great !

  93. F.... ....

    Fuck I love this song.
