Freddie Mercury and Hansi Kürsch are my favourite singers of all time. Hansi may not quite have the technical proficiency or the range that Freddie had, but his voice has equally wonderful tone, colour and power. I feel so lucky I can listen to this song performed by both of them!

I'm pretty sure Hansi has a wider range.

My former wife had no idea this was a Queen song, she loved metal music and I love rock so, when I played NOTW on her truck this song arrived to her brain and said WTF!... God bless her in a better world than this!.

If I had to choose I still prefer the original, but I knew it because of this version. And not to say, making a great work over a great underrated song. Both are great, I love Hansi's drive. Of course it's supposed to sound different than the original: driven, distorted and with double bass drums, after listening the full Somewhere Far Beyond, come on ;).

It's nice to hear a different perspective on this under-appreciated classic.    I hope Deacon and Mercury like it, wherever they are.  I like the guitar and chorus in this version better than the double kick drum type stuff.  It's a shame so few people cover Queen.  Glad it's a decent power metal band.

+Gynyonet Yes, I know Deacon is still alive, but he's out of the public eye, so as I said, I don't know where he is. I've read that some people think he's in a decades long depression, so that doesn't seem "well", but the couple of photos I've seen did have him looking OK. Thanks for trying to set the record straight and here's hoping he's living a happy life doing what matters most in life with his family.

The best power metal band to play this is Queen, who did so right after inventing power metal with songs like Fairy King, The Prophet's Song, Orge Battle and Fairy Feller's Master Stroke. Their first album was covered in it. Even if you don't consider it Metal, power metal owes a LOT to it.

Queen definitely helped to inspire power metal, listen to The Prophet song or The Great King Rat for example. Queen has a few proto metal songs. Rob Halford actually copied Freddie's more operatic style of vocals, that is something that has really taken off within power metal, that more operatic style of singing. All of the other rock groups at the time sang or performed from a blues rock basis, even bands such as Black Sabbath performed from a blues basis. Queen's heavier music has more in common with metal then normal rock. A lot of metal bands cover songs from Queen, and it usually works very well, because there are some similarities.

Just because they liked Queen, it doesn't mean they inspired to create power metal! I might like other kinds of music and that's it. Queen is not even close to what power metal is. They're a rock band.

Blind Guardian is clearly very heavily influenced by Queen, just listen to the multi-layered vocals of both bands, not to mention BG's A Night At The Opera is obviously named after the Queen album. As a fan of Blind Guardian, you should at least have some respect for the influence Queen had on them.

They are not only inspired by Queen, they have a vast knowledge about music from baroque to modern times. They know exactly what they are doing, unlike most of chart musicians today.

Queen is also Metal (sporadically).

You know, I actually hadn't heard the original until today, and I was rather surprised at how closely they lined up. Listen to them back to back. Mercury's voice was never as rough, but it was very powerful, which is what makes this work as well as it does. As for "yelling in a mic" though, yeah, you have no idea what you're talking about, at least in this instance. Songs are not "meant" to be sung any way. That's up to the performer.

I'll never understand why a band so awesome as Blind Guardian would choose to do a cover of such an awful song, by such an abysmal band such as Queen. For shame!

yup. i mean, i agree, this voice is suitable for hard metal, but look at the song they're covering. it might be one of the most emotional, touching queen songs of all time. that's the way it's beautiful, and changing the music it's been written onto doesn't make it a brash and hard song because the lyrics still convey those tender emotions. i had listened to bard's song before by this band and i loved it, but i think this is wandering a little too far off their musical range. imho.

i listened for 7 seconds and stopped. im sorry, compared to freddie's voice, that's just screaming.

It's hard to compare this version to the original because they seem to be going for two different interpretations of the song (this cover's great). That being said, Queen themselves played many different versions of this song, and there are a lot of them to me that are better than the original, like the BBC version.

this cover is a little bit better than the original (in my personal opinion)
