Blackmore's Night - Lady In Black Lyrics

She came to me one morning
One lonely Sunday morning
Her long hair flowing
In the midwinter wind

I know not how she found me
For in darkness I was walking
And destruction lay around me
From a fight I could not win

She asked me name my foe then
I said the need within some men
To fight and kill their brothers
Without thought of love or God

And I begged her give me horses
To trample down my enemies
So eager was my passion
To devour this waste of life

But she wouldn't think of battle that
Reduces men to animals
So easy to begin
And yet impossible to end

For she's the mother of all men
Who counselled me so wisely then
I feared to walk alone again
And asked if she would stay

Oh, lady, lend your hand outright
And let me rest here at your side
"Have faith and trust in peace," she said
And filled my heart with life

There's no strength in numbers
Have no such misconception
But when you need me
Be assured, I won't be far away

Thus, having spoke, she turned away
And though I found no words to say
I stood and watched until I saw
Her black coat disappear

My labour is no easier
But now I know I'm not alone
I'll find new heart each time
I think upon that windy day

And if one day she comes to you,
Drink deeply from her words so wise
Take courage from her as your prize
And say hello from me

They said Uriah Heep's was a Poor man's Deep Purple. ..but Ritchie dispelled the notion by choosing Lady In Black to cover as his song.

  43. G.... D....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZeFGkDuvgo thx :)

  44. e.... ....

Awesome!!! Great arrangement. This is where Uriah Heep was trying to go. This song would have fit the vocals of Ray Thomas from the Moody Blues.

Not fond of a few minor changes in the song, but I do like this version in most respects. Always will love the version by Heep more though.

I really don't like this cover! Because of vocals!

  49. E.... W....

I've always loved this song. I love this cover.

  50. D.... ....

I still have to say Uriah Heep's is the best because it was my husband and I's wedding song but this is a great cover. Until looking around I had no idea how much it has been. I think it's awesome because Uriah Heep gets almost zero recognition nowadays.

I first heard this song when I got back from overseas. It reminded me of what I went through. But it put everything in perspective. When I start to  remember all the bad shit I went through over there, I listen to this song snd it comforts me.  Sometimes something as simple as a song can do alot more than a pile of medication. I'm in my 6o's now, but I still remember those days when I was in my 20's and  the nightmare I went through. Thanks for posting this to whoever put it out here. From an old Booney Rat Grunt(US Army Infantry) Thanks

Paul Mowery I'm 36, discovered Heep, Purple, Sabbath,ELP,Zappa, etc, through my father, Vietnam vet 71/72. He was in Cam rahn Bay. I heard lots of stories of living each day as it were your last over there because you never knew, even at that time when the war began to fall apart a bit.

    P.... M....

    Thank you for your service.

    P.... M....

@Marie Blackwood what kind of service? You was atacked by someone? Did Iraq, Afganistan, Serbia, Syria and so on, invaded USA??? Fucking killers and aggresors!

    P.... M....

@Anastasija Jelic Regardless what the US did, this guy is innocent. There was a draft, and others just thought that serving their country was a good think. Go fuck yourself you hateful hag. Unlike this guy, you have nothing but anger and hatred behind your post. Piece of filth.

  64. L.... S....

Magic, magic, true magic! I don't know what kind of magic Candice and Ritchi used here - white, black, celtic, or any other. I only know they did an incredible thing. They made a new song from Uriah Heep ballad. New accents, new thoughts and feelings. Not a simple cover, but a new song equal in strength to original composition. Brilliant interpretation of brilliant song

  83. m.... m....

Not bad cover if I do say so myself

  84. R.... ....

reminds me of dungeons and dragons, great song it also feels different from the original one, like it is a different song

    R.... ....

Covers should never clone the original. Make it your own. Ask Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan ;-)

  85. r.... ....

This is such soothing music. I always listen to it when I'm not feeling well, it helps me sleep

+Shewolf134 I know how you feel, I listened to music like this when I was a child, this kind of music soothed the soul, kept the nightmares at bay, even today, nothing has really changed, I still drop like a 20 ton hammer.

    S.... ....

Who can sleep, while Uriah Heep is playing...

    S.... ....

Shewolf134 honestly, it might be rock and roll but the way it flows and the way her voice just washes over you is so relaxing

Listening to this now trying to get to sleep

Never heard this version before. Interesting.
    Thanks for posting!

  93. K.... K....

I'd never heard of Uriah Heep before hearing this cover, but I decided I wanted to listen to the original. In comparison to the BN version, it lacks so much depth!

  94. g.... ....

Does anyone know the english version 'of this song?

    g.... ....

@gecetreni100 this Is the English version.

    g.... ....

    +gecetreni100 ahhahahahahahahaha made me lol

  95. M.... H....

I love the original Uriah Heep version and I love Blackmore's Night version too.
Lady in Black is a great song that stood the test of time. The lyrics about man's violence towards man is, unfortunately, still true today.

    M.... H....

as true as that is the question is when will it end?

    M.... H....

@Matthew Taylor Never, until mankind rises above itself.

    M.... H....

Mankind cannot rise above it as a species we are wired for negative, and if we could overcome the psychological setbacks of our evolution, we’d simply breed ourselves into extinction, we’d end up much like Thanos’s homeworld, too many beings too few resources. Unfortunately humans hateful nature is placed in us as a preservation measure. I’d love to have a happy joy filled world, full of goodness, but I fear it would be short lived and ultimately more damning when it fell apart. As for me I do what I can to make my world better, I’m just too realistic to believe in fairytales.

  96. M.... G....

Ritchie and Candice do a great job with this song.

    M.... G....

I find Ritchie a bit lackluster, actually. I'd hoped for a richer embellishment of the riff, not just an electric chugg. Saying that, though, his electric solo is pretty delectable!

  97. D.... A....

eles são totalmente diferente, ouço aqui no Brasil, o pessoal não acredita. hahaha..não tem nada parecido, o instrumental e a voz da Candice Night. saudações do Brasil!
