Blackmore's Night - Greensleeves Lyrics

Alas my love, ye do me wrong to cast me out discourteously,
And I have loved you for so long delighting in your company...
Greensleeves was all my joy,
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but Lady Greensleeves...

    Replay :-0 ---> :-) Songs like these reminds me that there is a world where love is cherished and encouraged, one just needs to search for it. We can let evil take us, or we can realize that in the end, love will always win.

    Very beautifull music, really love the places youtube autoplay takes me sometimes! When it comes to the lyrics in the video, as an advise, if you can add an outline to the font, like black font with a white contour, or any other color, it becomes easy to read in any image, that's how they make sure subtitles are always readable in videos.

  8. S.... B....

    Thank you, the song is so beautiful, the picture you chose is so beautiful too, and perfectly suites to the song. The lyrics in the description is a gift more.

    Memories :(

  12. J.... O....

    I like so much almost all their songs, but I do not appreciate this "modern" version of this beautiful ancient traditional tune. The original version is much, much better.

    J.... O....

    Its understandable....but this was superbly made....perhaps the younger generation may aopreciate the older music for all of us to rejoice....💁‍♂️

  13. t.... g....

    13 th century Welsh song originally , never forget it ; nothing to do with the Tudors , sorry !!

    Thanks. I never knew that it is Welsh.😍

    @Gary Last To be fair nobody ever thinks about Wales.

    t.... g....

    So is it originally in Welsh? Cuz this version is apparently not. I would be glad if there is any link you could provide

    In my Last course at High School, I choiced this melody for an artístic gym excercise. It was an Orchestra versión. I Just know lyrics with this video.

    Lol you can't read the lyrics on the screen as the colour choice is stupid, kek

    @Celastrina Argiolus
    Here you are:

    Alas, my love, ye do me wrong,
          To cast me off discourteously:
    And I have lovèd you so long,
          Delighting in your company!
    Greensleeves was all my joy,
          Greensleeves was my delight;
    Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
          And who but Lady Greensleeves.

    I have been ready at your hand,
          To grant whatever you would crave;
    I have both wagèd life and land,
          Your love and good-will for to have.
    Greensleeves, &c.

    I bought thee kerchers to thy head,
          That were wrought fine and gallantly;
    I kept thee both at board and bed,
          Which cost my purse well-favour'dly.
    Greensleeves, &c.

    I bought thee petticoats of the best,
          The cloth so fine as might be;
    I gave thee jewels for thy chest,
          And all this cost I spent on thee.
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy smock of silk, both fair and white,
          With gold embroider'd gorgeously;
    Thy petticoat of sendal right,
          And these I bought thee gladly.
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy girdle of the gold so red,
          With pearls bedeckèd sumptuously,
    The like no other lasses had:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy purse, and eke thy gay gilt knives,1
          Thy pin-case,2 gallant to the eye;
    No better wore the burgess' wives:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy crimson stockings, all of silk,
          With gold all wrought above the knee;
    Thy pumps, as white as was the milk:
          And yet though wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy gown was of the grassy green,
          Thy sleeves of satin hanging by;
    Which made thee be our harvest queen:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thy garters fringèd with the gold,
          And silver aglets 3 hanging by;
    Which made thee blithe for to behold:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    My gayest gelding thee I gave,
          To ride wherever likèd thee;
    No lady ever was so brave:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    My men were clothèd all in green,
          And they did ever wait on thee;
    All this was gallant to be seen:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    They set thee up, they took thee down,
          They served thee with humility;
    Thy foot might not once touch the ground:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    For every morning, when thou rose,
          I sent thee dainties, orderly,
    To cheer thy stomach from all woes:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Thou couldst desire no earthly thing,
          But still thou hadst it readily,
    Thy music, still to play and sing:
          And yet thou wouldst not love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    And who did pay for all this gear,
          That thou didst spend when pleasèd thee?
    Even I that am rejected here,
          And thou disdainest to love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Well! I will pray to God on high,
          That thou my constancy mayst see,
    And that, yet once before I die,
          Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    Greensleeves, now farewell! adieu!
          God I pray to prosper thee!
    For I am still thy lover true:
          Come once again and love me!
    Greensleeves, &c.

    So you're saying Ritchie plagiarized himself?  :-)

    L.... R....

    Yes! :)

  27. K.... K....

    Sounds much like a Christmas song but I can't put a finger on which one

    K.... K....

    It sounds like "What Child is This".  Christians didn't like the popular song, Greensleeves, because of the lyrics and likely interpretation.  Greensleeves likely referred to a prostitute, or at least that was the interpretation although there were others.  So, just like Christianity co-opted the Winter Solstice celebrations by switching the birthday of Jesus (assuming he existed, his birth was most likely in July) to the same time, they co-opted a popular song about a prostitute by keeping the same tune and changing the lyrics.

    K.... K....

    @Robert Gamble that is the song that used the music from greensleeves yes. greensleeves is the original but what child is this is a great song lyrically as well, you are absolutely correct.

    K.... K....

    @Robert Gamble I thought Greensleeves was a song Henry VIII had written for Anne Boleyn

    K.... K....

    @Sebastian Taylor
    That's a common, longstanding misconception, however, the piece is based on an Italian style of composition that did not reach England until after Henry's death, making it more likely to be Elizabethan in origin
