I think to say that this is the most disgusting song ever is going a bit far . Billie sang of a reality that many faced and sadly too often lived. I don’t think like is the right word for such songs empathy and sympathy maybe,. She is not glorifying her treatment as many other songs do , she is explaining her vulnerability and a treatment that many faced and still face. No it’s not right that her man hits her and I don’t think any of the talented ladies who have sung this song have condoned that.

Oh my man I love him so." -That switch in tone she makes there, where she pulls herself up out of the saddest desperation to put on a face is brilliant but I think what makes it one of the great moments in 20th century singing is how, despite the obvious falsity of the sentiment, there is still within it a sincere hope and of course love. That does me in every time I hear it. "Oh, jeez, how can she possibly...?" I couldn't even guess how many times I've listened to that moment and thought about it as you are pretty much forced to if listening. That truly buries that emotion at a level I can only guess at.
What an odd connection this might be but I feel the exact same way when watching the end of Naked by Mike Leigh when Thewlis' character is on the verge of salvation but runs off again, damaged.

And every time I hear a song, with that voice, I’m that’s Lady Day. My favourite Album is Lady in Satin. She was getting sick, and lost a lot of her voice. But if you hear the album. She still could move you.

i love to sing and if i had to sing this version i would. my husband and i used to go to billie holiday competition in baltimore. i used t o near jump out my skin so badly did my heart want to be up there. but i was chicken. now im older, crippled from ms but my voice is still strong and clear...maybe one day i will get another chance...:)

ive heard billie sing this 2 different ways but this is the version i adore.
to the comments about her voice, cobain and streisand. first, i agree with comment about how raw emotion can bring out raw beauty in music. a clear demonstration its not always about being technically perfect. and while i loved barbara streisand long before i discovered billie, hands down this version just goes to my soul. i heard once billie holiday was the only one who could seamlessly wrap her voice around the instruments.what does that mean ? i think it means there are some of her more jazzy tunes where her notes are so perfect one canna tell her voice from the horn.

All time great. Drugs destroyed a true gift.
