Billie Holiday - Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?) Lyrics

I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something I never had
Never had no kissin'
Oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

The night is cold and I'm so alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems

Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a-kissing
Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

Such a sad song about her life with men who treated her wrongfully until her death. This angel has now found her lover man.

I appreciate Billy Holidays music and As well as think eshe was beyond her time because her music still plays on like it was yesterday. God Bless Billy Holiday and I wish her family and friends the best live on musically Billy Holiday! Love You More Than You Will Ever Know!

I didn't know that this was the first recorded version, or that the tune was written for her, specifically...
I just know that she was at the peak of her powers at that time, and upon my first-hearing of this performance (on top of this glorious arrangement), it immediately became, for me, the definitive one.
I've never heard of any of the members of the songwriting team (which says more about me than it does about them, I have no doubt), but I'll pay them a left-handed compliment:
Until I knew that it wasn't, thanks to the Poster's program notes above, I always thought that this bluesy non-blues was written by the master of that particular musical niche, Harold Arlen.

Wonderful Lady Day ... such a great command of connotation , of just lilting along with sadness , perhaps regret but her love of life and her beauty shines through.. Love Lady Day !

The song is rare. Lowering the volume makes the feeling stronger. Lives in the heart I guess.

Bought here by Jack Kerouac's "On The Road". It's crazy that you can have a multi synaesthetic experience with this book since he makes so many references.

    R.... V....

Hey guy, me too. I've been reading it, Kerouac is amazing!

*brought @Natalier Júnior what a coincidence! I just started part 2, still working on an opinion

    @Rafael Viana
Coincidence again, I just started part 2 too. It's interesting how I can feel freedom while I'm reading the book. I get impressed the way that he get to do this. I have no words to describe him.

    R.... V....

OMG! I started the part two today and had to come hear this song... So in love for this book/freedom

@Fernando Antonio Rodríguez Uriol , Yes I totally agree with you about the power of music. This version as I stated in my original post, takes me back to this time period. I really feel like I was there, when listening to Billy Holiday's music.

This isn't the original recording though is it? I have the original by Billie on the Jazz history compilation and much prefer it!

@James Anderson This version was recorded in 1944 for Decca. I think she recorded a later version that would be available today on Verve. Is that the version you might have?
