Bill Callahan - So Long, Marianne Lyrics
Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think that I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us
We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
Your letters, they all say that you're beside me now
Then why do I feel so all alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
For now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again

Love this version. Love 'Dead man's shoes' more.

Wanna buy any mandies Bill?
I never knew Tim Brooke Taylor had a side job!
Jesus that was beautiful!
So long Marrianne, get the hell out of Manchester united quickly,ya hear?
Like coming down off good acid.
Cohen and Callahan are geniuses...
Fantastic.
Fantastic version of a superb song. Leonard would like this.
Kill me. Perfect cover. Leave it to Bill.
We lost Leonard but we still have Bill.
When Leonard found out that Marianne was going die last year, he wrote her this letter: Well Marianne it's come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine. And you know that I've always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road.
Marianne died in July.
Leonard followed her in November.
beautiful cover
I just love this version
Maybe my favourite Cohen song, had no idea Bill Callahan covered it. Fantastic.
Incredible!
So long, Leonard.
reminds me of Hurt by Johnny Cash - very raw
Always loved this song - but what an extraordinary remake! This is really a perfect - vocally, instrumentally, and arrangement-wise!
I really like this rendition. This song goes way back for me. I know the earlier artists' work and I think this is a splendid version.
Be still, my heart
DOCTOR SANCHEZ
Marianne Ihlen died 28. july 2016 in Oslo Norway, 81 years old. Rest in peace Marianne.
Sad, but she will live on forever in this song.
If she changed her name "again & again" how do you know it's the right lady?
so long to my Marianne
Amazing stuff. Our band's lead singer is very influenced by this stuff. Check it out if you get a chance. Peace!!
Ed Word & The Misinformation Superhighway whats the name?
so so sooooo beautiful song and version!!
I somehow associate this cover with Neil Young's album On the Beach.
HladnorukiLuka yes!!!
Beautiful cover but yes +anthony cudahy 2.26 indeed.
Man this guy...
something else
So I hate saying it, but Jesus Christ. I want to scream, this is so sensational and beautiful. This has long been a favorite of mine from Cohen, but I think Bill Callahan has outdone himself on this... this is stunning. I'm in love with this man!
Damn... He does it right
If anyone is wondering (like i was) i think the chords he is using are
G, Am, C, G, F, C, Em, D
Then the chorus
G, Em, D
Bill usually tunes half a step down from normal EADGBE though...!
@Tim Spencer as well was doing Kurt...
One of the most distinct covers of any Cohen classic, including all the "Hallelujah" "Chelsea Hotel" and "Famous Blue Raincoat" covers. It's like Don Williams, Tom Rush, early Jerry Jeff and Cohen made a hybrid zygote that grew into something new.
It's a far better than every cover of Hallelujah past present and future.
@shaolin1derpalm Except maybe John Cale.
Beatuful
Similar to: Terry Jacks, but without the religious tones.
Woooooow, that's so much better than the original! I've listened to other songs too and I have to say the man is a genius! What a voice!
no, leonard is the best.
Such a good one
sooooo gooood!
What a voice. From another era. Gotta see him live.
Incredible experience watching Bill live. I saw him in Barcelona in 2008. Stunning!
love this version. He delays the chorus until after the 3rd verse. Makes it sound more epic IMO
Bill Callohen, anyone?
Does any of you know if this cover has appeared on any of Bill's cds? I simply love his version.
No, but if you can get your hands on Mojo magazine's Jan. 2012 giveaway CD, you get it on there.
this emphasize my september, the break up month
Thanks for everything, Mr. Callahan.
hahahahahah
All I know about you is that you like the same musicians I do. So, obviously, I accept your proposal.
Marry me.
Wow, I am glad I gave this a second listen. It's a great cover; look what I was missing out on. Bill is an awesome composer and a great singer.
Good looking, B. Callahan. You're music is much appreciated.
Great version.
ah marianne, yine hatırlayacağız her şeyi ve yine güleceğiz, yine ağlayacağız...sonra yine güleceğiz ve yine ağlayacağız...
bill doing cohen.... it's too befitting and beautiful~
This cover is so full of charm and energy - needs an iTunes download version!
read about this in an old issue of Rolling Stone. I enjoy this version very much, it has a different type of emotion than the original, but that's okay. He sounds like Dwight Yoakam a bit (At least like his character in Sling Blade), I've never listened to much of Callahan's work.
Got damn, this made my day!
if only he did more covers as well as original songs. he puts more life in songs out there.
This cuts the tongue right out of what makes Leonard Cohen's original so special.
brilliant cover
surrounded by so much beauty .... bill callahan is a master of beauty, floating in the universal line.
Really great!! Wonderful cover. Thanks for share it, I don't know this cover, and Bill Callahan and Mr. Cohen are in my Top 10 Musicians...
so longgggggg
3 people are dead inside
Bill Callahan is a human whisperer. Any anxiety or depression I get is immediately tempered by the beauty and joy of this man's voice.
i want to marry him
Can't fail with this fella. I think with his partnership with guitarist Matt Kinsey, he's reaching new heights...pedal steel is Sweet Gary Newcomb too! Love this shit and real special dude.
Because of such things life is worth living!
Amazing; was always going to be.
Bill Callahan is the fucking man, I like him more than Leonard Cohen, actually.
Bill, LC, I mean really, could it be anything short of amazing?
