Big K.R.I.T. - Praying Man Lyrics

[Hook:]
Guess I was on the road
Didn't know which way to go
I think I hear a praying man coming
A praying man coming

Sometimes I couldn't read the signs
My people done left me behind
I think I hear a praying man coming
I think I hear a praying man coming

[Verse 1: Big Krit]
Stumble along the path, he emerged from the grass
Stopped at me and asked why so sad
Perhaps because they had taken what I had
I'm sure it wasn't much to them but it was all that I could grab
I was on my way to church, I was running late at first
But after all this riff raff here, I missed service and it hurts
But what's worse I'm not sure how long I've been swaying in the breeze
Tired of talking to the trees and you the first praying man that I've seen
I [?] lending hand, but I see if you got some time
I'm glad you looked up because most people pay no mind
He smiled and said "Son well, I can do you one better"
He removed a pocket knife and cut me down from my oppressor, forever

[Hook]

[Verse 2: Big Krit]
Boating along the sea, he emerged from the mist
Asked me how I got far from the beach
Cause they stripped me of my pride and put these shackles on my feet
I was stacked on top of my folk and it was really hard to breathe
It was a little hard to believe that I had been caught up in this mess
And some of my own people would sell me to my death
It was a lot of us on the ride and it was a lot of us that was lost
But some of us couldn't take it so some of us jumped off
And I'm really glad you found me on your course
I been out here for a while and there's no sign of the shore
He smiled and said "Son well I can do you one better"
He lended me his hand and picked me up from my oppressor, forever

[Hook]

[Verse 3:]
Driving along the road
He asked me what I was running from and where I was trying to go
"Well I was working in the field and one of my kinfolk just got killed
And I knew they'd come for me and Lord knows I wanna live
See I heard there's people free, not that far but far from me
To be running from these dogs with no shoes up on my feet
I heard of this railroad that ventures underground
And takes my kind of people to a place that we can't be found
And I been wounded for some miles, so I decided to rest my head
I guess they let me go cause they assumed that I was dead"
Smiled and said "Son well let me do you one better"
He offered me a ride and drove me far away from my oppressor, forever

[Hook]

1st verse is about a slave who was running late to church and was hanged along his way. He didn't realize he was dead. Jesus appeared, cut him down, and offered him salvation for his well placed faith, "forever"

2nd verse is about a slave who had been captured by his own people, and sold into slavery. Struggling with this, while on the boat, he couldn't take it, and jumped off. He drown, and thought he was adrift, when Jesus walks up and offers him salvation for his well placed faith, "forever"

3rd verse is about a slave who had seen his kinfolk killed in the fields, and decided to make a run for the Underground Railroad. He was shot and died during the run. Jesus pulled up in a wagon, and offered him salvation for his well placed faith, "forever"

I think the last word of the verse(s) is important. I think its literal, as the only things "forever" to God, is faith and truth.

I think the song is about the relationship between slave and spirit. Man and God.

I believe all 3 verses are about slaves and their faith and death, and God is coming to collect on the well placed faith, to take them "away from their oppressors forever"

That's why I believe all three dead, and Jesus is the praying man across the board. Because the last bar is the same for all three, and forever is pretty eternal.

If the slaves were still in the flesh, then their freedom would be far from "forever."

One of Krits underrated tracks, and it has the late, great, B.B. King.

keep your it up man good stuff

    D.... A....

Dierius Abby it's ok, good lyrics but you need to work on your delivery a bit in order to capture the attention of your audience. your lyrics were meaningful but you were a little off beat and seemed to lack passion. just a little constructive criticism.

  29. R.... C....

@ Cory Edwards it did the same to me.

  30. T.... ....

Big Krit gets all the respect possible for givin some shine to B.B. King. Any rapper artist that can pull the legends from other genres to be on a project gets my vote for president.

  33. J.... A....

  35. C.... J....

    highly questionable sent me here

  36. C.... E....

Whats funny is, most people dont understand the lyrics. I think vs one is about a slave that was hanged while on his way to church. He thought that he was still alive and saw God approach him on said path and cut him down from his oppressors. Vs two was about a drowned man that was found by God in the ocean after jumping off of a slave ship. He thought he'd just been floating and still alive... Vs Three was about a slave that was on the run and killed. He died, while thinking that he was sleeping. God saved him. This song brought tears to my eyes when I actually listened to it. Talk about songs drawing feelings...

    C.... E....

    That's legit!!

    C.... E....

@StillRapids   All three are dead imo. The "praying man coming" is Jesus himself. Even in the last verse. The man in the wagon is Jesus. He drove him far away from his oppressors "forever"

The same word that followed the 2 we know are dead.

I dont think the last word of the verse(s) is for not or by accident. I think its literal, as the only things "forever" to God, is faith and truth.

"I've been wounded for some miles"
"They gave up cause they were sure that I was dead" - a corpse is not a usable slave. They gave up the chase <> he was dead. Jesus offered a ride to salvation.

If the slave was still in the flesh, then his freedom would be far from "forever."

    C.... E....

Bet money eye do this was one the realiest song ever wrote eye felt this song all threw ny body the song will give you the visual of what our ancestors saw and went through overcame eye overstand the demographics of the song and what slavery was really a bout brother

    C.... E....

That’s deep. I’ve been listening to this album since 2012 and now I understand the lyrics to this song. Thanks.

    C.... E....

  55. E.... B....

Obligatory comment condescending to the intelligence of mainstream music fans, thus ostracizing them from this songs important message further.

    E.... B....

Good for you. You've found the true essence of hip hop. You may now pick up another copy of illmatic (we already know you have one, but here's another) and a lifetime supply of freestyles set over Wutang beats. Don't worry, the music was specially chosen by professional hip hop experts

    m.... ....

@miketheman247 It is a little different. This version doesn't have the bassline the original had. The guitar riff changed a little on the hook, too.
