Ben Folds - Not The Same Lyrics
You took a trip and climbed a tree
At Robert Sledge's party
And there you stayed 'till morning came
And you were not the same after that
And after all your friends went home
You came down, you looked around
And you were not the same after that
(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that
(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on...
To it
You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people's pain and for that
You were idolised, immortalised
And you were not the same after that
Walking tall, you'd bought it all
And you were not the same after that
Till someone died on the waterslide
And you were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on to it
(ooh ooh ooh ooh)
(YOU WERE NOT THE SAME!)
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on:
You're hanging on:
You're hanging on:

Ben Folds Not The Same Comments
Do people still do acid? My friends wouldn't let me try it. They said with my weird brain I'd end up in a mental hospital.
God, this song is powerful. Always makes me tear up
My son and his friend played this on piano and drums at their senior school leaving concert and it nearly caused a riot- I was there and it was an amazing experience- great song
< You can just tell when someones a musical genius.
“You got one good trick and you’re hanging on...”
Sounds like my ex girl who I hope gets her shit together before her dumbass dies
Every single song on this album is pop/rock gold, this being a prime example - the intro alone knocks you for six. And the fact that one of the greatest American records of the decade was released on September 11, 2001 is actually quite disturbing.
Let’s face the facts everyone
Front ensemble, anyone?
I was not the same after hearing Ben Folds Five and Ben Folds solo music. Love from NC dude for almost 20 years!
i loved this song when i was 12 years old. at 30, the melancholy only increases. how bittersweet it is to be alive
You took a trip and climbed a tree
At Robert Sledge's party
And there you stayed 'till morning came
And you were not the same after that
You gave your life to Jesus Christ
And after all your friends went home
You came down, you looked around
And you were not the same after that
You were not the same after that
You were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on...
To it
You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people's pain and for that
You were idolized, immortalized
And you were not the same after that
Walking tall, you'd bought it all
And you were not the same after that
Till someone died on the water slide
And you were not the same after that
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You've got one good trick and you're hanging on you're hanging on to it
You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies

yO WeRE nOT tHe sAMe aFTer THat!
One of their best songs for sure
My band plays this for warm ups
Woah!!! Didn't see you there
Is this on Spotify
Percussion pit.
The background scream at 3:04 is my favorite part.
This is actually a pretty lit song :)
Kick it hard, Ben.
one of my favourite songs of all time tbh
welp...this came out when i graduated...16 years ago....im still loving it. however im a tad sad hahaha
trippy to hear this after playing it in pit for so long. I wrote a bass part for it lmao
It sounds as if this song is about rape
It's about a friend of his who climbed a tree while on acid, stayed up there all night, then came down the next morning saying he was now a born again Christian.
Heard Jacksfilms mention BenFolds and I immediately remembered this song. So much memories. So glad I found this gem again.
I found his music from jackfilms, guessing your not a kid.
Pandora's "Brian Wilson" station plays this - yes it IS very addicting !!!
you took a chance of listing the song
I was moved by this especially when Jesus Christ is mentioned. It got my attention. I love the Spirit and tune of song.
Jesus gave US this song and he gave YOU Donald Trump. So everyone is happy...:-)))
Great song but sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom.
It was.
I always figured this song was about the small things that change a person drastically for the rest of their life. Like tripping on presumably acid at a party and how it's such an intense experience that the person wasn't the same afterwards or witnessing someone die at a waterpark... Stuff that really fucks someone up, and you don't come back from as the same person.
It's actually about a guy who climbed a tree while on acid during a party, when he came back down he was a born again christian. Folds actually said that this happened to someone he knew
his instrumental is always so inspirational
sing off season 3 brought me here.
One of my all time fav songs
getting this on vinyl today
4th best on RTS after Fired, Gone and Annie Waits
you came down...
you looked around
Great double meaning
You were idolized, immortalized...you were not the same after that
Same lol
Pit is Lit Fam🔥🔥🔥
Tony君ね、英語分からんから。
Many high schools percussion play this song and so does ours lol
Ours does as well! I'm in battery but the Pit uses this for a warmup! :)
us to over at lebanon
I think so many do it because Carolina Crown used it as their warm up a few years back. But yeah, mine uses it too.
Haha. It took me this long to notice he was mentioning his old bassist by name. "Robert Sledge's party"
Ironically it actually was Darren Jesse's party (the drummer from Ben Folds Five)
According to an interview around the time of the album's release when Ben was asked: "Why the name change?", he simply replied that it sounded better and rolled off the tongue more easily with the melody.
YOU WERE NOT THE SAAAAAME
dont you get the point of this song? it's him who is not the same after that, and there's no other way to express the frustration than to blame they who changed you.
No, its about a guy who climbed a tree while on acid, when he came back down he was a born again christian
kittehdrawrs 😂😂
kittehdrawrs there we go
Incorrect.
It's about a guy who took an acid hit at a party, climbed a tree, and became Christan lmao
my percussion ensemble brought me here
Years ago I was in the Centerville Jazz band. The pit instructor arranged this song around 2009. I remember playing as a warm-up on the synth! :) Good memories.
Same here :))
same here, mama 🤪
I love this video too! It's Ben Folds singing one of his famous songs that came out on the day the planes struck the World Trade Center. I love it because it brings me back to what life was like the day it happened, and this song's going down in history for Generation Y.
you were not the same after that
HI BEN FOLDS
@21stCenturySchizoidMan Productions Is this an anti-Ben Folds comment?
I'm a idiot
I sang that song for weeks while crying and so forth
'twas a long time ago
12 people would kill if given the opportunity
この曲、大好き。
2014/11/17のオーチャードホールでのライブでも、観客みんなとコーラスして、とても記憶に残っている。
Really like the tempo he picked for this song. Really grooves!
Oh My goodness, our band is playing this!
Cool story bro, tell it again.
Such a good song.
I always think that the particular mixture of instruments almost makes it sound as if you were in the same room as him
It's a hard rock hip hop beat. It's what they turn all the glee songs into. To sound jazzy yet pop.
This song is so fucking addicting
Addictive
I was not the same after listening to it.
Thanks, but I know that. I was responding to Mournful3ch0's comment about fxhummel1, who did a cover version of this song on his channel:
watch?v=prLBf3c2oiU
no, Ben Folds wrote it. The Channel FXHummel1 did a great cover of it. Unless... he IS BEN FOLDS :O
Kidding.
he didnt cover it hes the one who wrote it
love this song
He did a pretty good job covering this.
hahaha i didn't know till today.. was doing my b.folds research and came across this show
Thank you FXHummel1
2DEEP4ME
How do you figure?
you don't even realize how deep that is
WHAT?!?! NO DESCRIPTION AVAILABLE!!!!?!?! WELL DUHHHH!! BEN IS TOO GOOD FOR ONE OF THOSE THINGS!!!!
as did i
this was the first song I listened this just after my first break-up over a year ago. Now, even though i'm completely over it, when i hear the starting notes of the piano I still litterally feel sick and alone as if i'm there again.
This song was not the same after that!
So it seems I'm not the only one who was here from playing this in band.
XYLOPHONE!!!,
VIBRAPHONE
Mi cancion preferida
About a year ago, I went to a show of my favourite nerd artist, and he played a cover of this song. :-) Absolutely adore Ben Folds.
nah Amy & Roger's Epic Detour got me here :)
Front ensemble warm up for marching band :D SYNTH#1
Goddamn waterslide.
My drumline brought me here. This song is one of our warmups :P
Like if you're not entirely sure what "Sing Off" is.
No fair the top comment has 12 thumbs down!! Mine from another vid had only 2 man! LOL Not that big a deal, just thought I'd goof around. I love the catharsis of heaviness and melody
that's part of the reason i love it so
@icutad2
Ben Folds actually says in an interview that that is, in fact, what this song is about.
Sounds like Robert Slange knows how to throw a party.
@benkurz1 It's almost like you listened to the first thirty seconds of the song or something. Crazy eh?
What I'd like to know is, how did someone die on the waterslide? There's a story to be told right there...
The Sing-Off brought me here. But I adore the song in its proper version. It's so pretty.
@Houstonjewels lol true dat
Carolina Crown 4 Mallet warm up anyone...
@espnemail555 That's called bass
hehehe it sounds a little like weezer?
how does a comment from 1 year ago stay the top comment for a year? O-o
I love the way he sings I heard it on "the sing off"
This was the best performance of the night on the sing off.
If you're seriously questioning ben's accreditation because of a sing-off performance you're an idiot.
@Gonk Glad I'm not the only one that didn't like his performance last year. This year's blew me away though.
lol, this song is funny but i like it
Ben redeemed himself with this song on the Sing Off, his last performance last year was all out of tune I was wondering why he was a judge but he redeemed.
anyone catch him do this on the sing-off? amazingggg.
@ShootfortheMoon0951 The okc concert? Because thats what we did there, and it was kick ass.
I was at one of his concerts and he had the audience do the three part harmony in the chorus. such a great song!!
1 Person, Fell out the Tree.
this is such a great track, my favourite by Mr Folds.
The first time I heard this, I thought during the first chorus "this song can't get any better". Oh, and then it did.
