Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 Lyrics

In the event of something happening to me
there is something I would like you all to see
It's just a photograph of someone that I knew

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones

I keep straining my ears to hear a sound
Maybe someone is digging underground
or have they given up and all gone home to bed
thinking those who once existed must be dead

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones

In the event of something happening to me
there is something I would like you all to see
It's just a photograph of someone that I knew

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones

....this song always gets me teary eyed thinking of my exes....dammit all...dammit...oh well im better off without em anyways....even though sadly at some nights...I can't help but think about them...one of em was perfect...nothing was wrong...I broke up with her cause well...I just didn't feel no spark with her...nothing wrong with the kisses we had it's just...my heart wouldn't link with hers for some reason so I guess it was telling me she wasn't the one...even though it was very wrong with a text break up...I couldn't bear to hear her crying when broke up over the phone because when a woman does that to me...it just makes me feel so bad enough to rot in jail or something...I dunno...I'm no whimp...I just hate the feeling of guilt...

Just have to respect that they even included the date of the disaster in the title so it wouldnt be forgotten.

    N.... P....

There wasn't a New York mine disaster in 1941. The song was actually inspired by the events at Aberfan in 1966. If you look up this song in Wikipedia you'll find a link to Aberfan as well as an explanation for how the song came about.

    N.... P....

@K L Wow surprising but true. Seems a waste of a good opportunity. I guess they were young and still looking for fame and worried about what people might think....

  15. i.... ....

    Masterpiece.

  16. e.... m....

I thought it was the Beatles at first. Great song great harmonies.

  17. c.... ....

If you ever needed proof that the Bee Gees were truly deep, this is it. Yes I do realize there is an unintentional pun there, sorry.

I never knew Rick Astley was the drummer, LOL!

I listen to the Bee Gees as much now as I did when I was 12yo--best year of my life; I wrote to RSO Records/Robert Stigwood that year about my deep love of their music, and he sent me dozens of old-fashioned albums, a hand-written note, and 8 complimentary tickets to an upcoming Bee Gees concert in my state in return. Me & my friends had the time of our lives at that concert in '79--and it was so cool to be paged out of class at that age for a call from a "Mr. Stigwood in New York." He actually called my home phone number while I was in school, and my mom gave him the school's phone number. He was/is a class act & a kind gentleman; and my love for the Bee Gees has never waned over the years. I was wactually in the hospital when I saw on the news that Maurice had died, and kept wishing it was all just a bad dream. I miss Maurice & Robin terribly, they surely passed away far too young. I still imagine hearing the 3 of them sing together today, how brilliant that would be! The Bee Gees remain my all-time fave band, they are a legendary group for all-time--and the memories their music evokes are priceless. I love their older music equally as much as the disco era--it is all timeless. God Bless you, Sir Barry & may you rest in peace together Maurice, Robin & Andy--still harmonizing together in the Heavens above and bringing immense joy to our lives for decades to come <3

Ah, back when songs told stories.

  44. g.... ....

Lol is anyone else disturbed that the drums don't line up at all. And literally that's not even the beat he's playing, you don't hear any toms or snare during that straight bass drum thump. Hilarious they posted this video its not even accurate.

They wrote so many amazing songs, years before their mega-famous disco days.

  56. F.... G....

Their influence on and having been influenced by the Who is clear. Likewise, the Clash and Jam owe so much to them.

A child actor, have you seen him in "Smiley" the film, or "The Scamp"? In the latter he plays the drums superbly!

I want to tell a story, you can stick around and read it or leave.

    ---Start---
When i was 5 years old, i used to sing this songs and a couple other with my father on the way to the mall, with my mom, and dad. I knew the words, but since i'm from non english country i didn't know the meanings. Years past by, my parents got divorced. My dad married a new woman and now i don't have time to be with my dad anymore, he has a 6 year olds and a 1 year olds. So a couple weeks ago, i was going back to these songs. Like Living on a Jet plane(John Denver), I'm Yours (Jason Mraz) and others that i forgot. Now i'm older, i understand the meanings. I started crying because i remembered how fun it was to gather around with my family, once i have a kid, i'd definetly introduce them to these songs.
    ---end---

Thanks for reading, i appreciate it.

    p.... 1....

did u guys sing bee gees tunes?

    p.... 1....

    @Jeff Buckley yep...

    p.... 1....

Planarian 17 🌷🧡 love that story and if u do have kids it would be cool to show this song I agree 🧡🧡

    p.... 1....

@Zann zZ Zzz thank you for reading...

    p.... 1....

Planar ian 17 I think it is a lovely story and a great memory for you, but kinda sad. You should share it with your father, he may not realize how much you miss spending time with him like that. Life goes by so fast, you need to grab those moments while you can. And you're right, make those special moments when you have kids.

  70. S.... R....

I can't believe this is the same Bee Gees that did Stayin Alive

    S.... R....

Early Bee Gees is magic innit? Although I disagree about disco being a fad. It’s timeless and a great evolution of funk, and a precursor to electronic music.

    S.... R....

No kidding Shawn! What the HELL happened to them?!

    S.... R....

I like their disco era, but I still prefer their 60's music era. So much better.

    S.... R....

@Trevor Wylie In fact that was Robin solo, during the period he split from his brothers.

    S.... R....

    Different but still amazing

  71. T.... h....

Fun fact timeeeee:This song was written while an power was down in the hole city so after there were given the task of writing a song they sat down on some stairs and through all the darkness they got the idea of a miner sitting in a mine without any light!

Also this was one of the first songs to feature more than just the three gibbs

    T.... h....

The hoosher this song is also influenced by the The Welsh Mining Disaster of 1966

    T.... h....

They wrote this song in total darkness in the basement of Polydor record studio in the afternoon for pure inspiration. They often wrote songs in weird situations and places Fact!

  72. p.... ....

Disco made them rich - but not artistically satified - they were FAR better before "Disco (STILL) Sucks!"

  73. o.... r....

I have a question what kine of Guitar is Barry Gibb holding is it a Gibson es 335 or 330 or an epiphone casino?

    o.... r....

oryctes rhinoceros that would be an es 330.

    o.... r....

    @Alex Drake thanks

  74. D.... L....

You know, when they're not singing in that stupid, squeaky-ass falsetto I can actually stand to listen to them

    D.... L....

Yes, I adore Robin's vocals and lyrics, but I cannot stand Barry's squeaky falsetto. Barry brought them back to success in the mid-70s, but he ruined the Bee Gee's reputation in most people's eyes.

  75. C.... u....

Much preferred the older Bee Gees stuff, this one and sinkin ships my favorite. I think the skinny bloke sings better.

  76. S.... W....

Vince Maloney played on the record but isn't in the clip. I guess he wasn't yet a full-time Bee Gee.

    S.... W....

Sorry but that is Barry Gibb.@stringybarkband

  77. N.... C....

Don't be talking too loud you'll cause a landslide.... Mr Jones...

    N.... C....

    Totally about Aberfan :(

  78. C.... ....

  79. p.... m....

    This is so almost badass.

  80. J.... H....

I found a out this song because of a Facebook meme of the worst songs to strip to

  81. r.... 1....

    where is Maurice ?

    r.... 1....

playing bass on the left - very young

  82. R.... T....

Was there really a mining disaster in New York State in 1941? If so, where did it happen, how many died?

  83. l.... l....

back in the days when the Bee Gees made good records before going into all the disco shit of the 70's

    l.... l....

leslie lees I totally agree. They had lots of hits in the rock category in the 60s and early 70s. They became huge with the disco sound but, I just felt they were better before disco.

    l.... l....

I am happy because now I realized that I am not the only one who hates disco music of 70's

  84. P.... H....

    those teeth

  85. R.... H....

They looked like one of those british invation bands

    R.... H....

That's because they were. Sort of, it was an invasion though.

  89. g.... m....

before they sold out to disco

  90. A.... J....

I love this song. The drummer looks damn cool in that suit and hat.

  91. A.... L....

Admittedly highly derivative of the Beatles but still a pretty great song in its own right.

    A.... L....

I don't think it sounds like the Beatles at all

    A.... L....

This song sounds a little bit like The Beatles, those harmonies and also that rythim guitar.

    Trurly, a great song.

    A.... L....

@Miguel Osvaldo Flores Dominguez three British lads singing in harmony. What do you want them to do disguise their voices because they sound similar to the Beatles or just become a Beatles cover band. Listen to the great blues artists all playing similar songs with very little variation.
