Love the way Robin sings year after year--his voice is so unique--love it!!

The semi-funny part of this little tale is that Fist of May tanked. Peaked at #58, at least in the US. Maybe it did better elsewhere. A good rule of thumb is too avoid songs that have Christmas trees in the lyrics because it is a cheap trick to elicit nostalgia and pull on the heartstrings without having to actually write moving lyrics.

@KL You agree with me that their golden years were 1967/1968? Robin was at the top of his game as singer songwriter. When he lost inspiration as lyricist the Bee Gees suffered a crisis. Barry had step it up but he went over the top. Too overbearing!

This is the song that caused Robin to go solo-he wanted it to be their next single. Barry wanted First Of May and got it.

Well, it was probably one of the final straws that brought the decision down for Robin walking away. But, hey, there was a lot of troubled water under the bridge by that point.........

Robin was right; this is the better song. What would have been overwrought and almost silly in any other singer's voice was gold in his. That Barry muscled his way into being the lead full time was unfortunate.

This is the song that caused the break up, Stigwood released "First Of May" as a A side and put "Lamplight" on B side, Robin thought Stigwood was favoring Barry, I do think "Lamplight" is a much stronger song though !

I'm in the US and they didn't make much of a splash mostly on account of disco backlash. For me though, it's like getting new music from Robin which is awesome.

@beeharbour I'm from the U.S. also & they never sold less than 3 million LP's after Fever, they had a huge fan base.

@Spud Johnsonn What can I say, I did a lot of drugs back in the day and this is not the only gap in my recollection.

There was a narrative in place for them from the moment they started harmonizing, Barry was the leader and would never be challenged while the twins were his back up singers. No one could have predicted that Robin's adult voice would be so freaking good. Barry found himself looking at Robin's back when he sang lead. That was not in the script. I don't necessarily blame Barry for the turn things took when the band reformed because I don't know how the industry works and who decides who sings what. There were rumors that Bee Gee manager types paid radio stations to not play Robin's songs but I don't know what truth there is to that. I certainly do not think Barry would ever do such a thing to his brother even with the bad blood between him and Robin that never truly went away from the looks of things. Not that I know a blessed thing about these gentlemen beyond their amazing body of work. I've formed stupid opinions based on less evidence than we have here.
