Beach Boys - Johnny Carson Lyrics
He sits behind his microphone
John-ny Car-son
He speaks in such a manly tone
John-ny Car-son
Every night at eleven thirty he's so funny
It's (nice) to (have) you (on) the (show) tonight
I've seen (your) act (in) Vegas out of sight
When guests are boring he fills up the slack
John-ny Car-son
The network makes him break his back
John-ny Car-son
Ed McMahon comes on and says "Here's Johhny"
Don't (you) think (he's) such (a) natural guy
The (way) he's (kept) it (up) could make you cry
Who's a man that we admire?
Johnny Carson is a real live wire.
Who's a man that we admire?
Johnny Carson is a real live wire.
Who's a man that we admire?
Johnny Carson is a real live wire.
Who's the man that we admire?
Johnny Carson is a real live wire.

Beach Boys Johnny Carson Comments
I think this was Brian - consciously or otherwise - giving it up for the guy who was able to do what everyone wanted Brian to do. Everyone needed Brian to be the creative workhorse of the group and not just produce and write what HE wanted to produce and write but what the rest of the band told him the world wanted. I think Brian saw Johnny Carson out there night after night, breaking his back for the network, and penned an homage to the man that he admired who could do what he had always struggled with so mightily.
Still better than the 1980’s synth-pop. That’s for sure.
to think that big, real money was spent on this and actually released on a major label. I mean, they actually listened back to this and considered it deemable lol
Love You is such a fantastic album. I wish the Beach Boys made more albums just like it.
#gottalisten2b4udie He speaks in such a manly tone. Who's a man that we admire? Johnny Carson is a real live wire!

Listening to this again: this album should be a musical about a lonely rock star holding on to his sanity.
I'd argue that's what this song is. Not so much a lonely rockstar, more a songwriter cracking under the pressure that's heaped on him by family, bandmates, and record label. He sees Johnny Carson on TV and can't fathom how he keeps it up. That much is pretty overt in the lyric - why else would one feel like they wanna 'cry' over some TV show host's ability to deliver night after night.
@Tom Christie I'm convinced this should be staged somewhere...even though the music is not well known, it could work. Brian made a gem with this record.
Odd, but beautiful...
How could I have forgotten all about this album. So glad I found it again.
I love this goofy album.
This goofy album loves you!
best song on the album imo
thomas Day Very good song, my fav on Love You is I’ll Bet He’s Nice
And Brian was not even on drugs at the time he made this crazy cool album!
that we know of
psychotropic drugs
Lithium
Oh yes he was, Ding Dang was written while high off cocaine.
sure sounds like he was on something. In fact isn't this pretty much the peak of his drug use and mental instability? Like maybe he was trying not to use during this time period, but something was definitely still off and he was unwell. I'm sure chemicals were involved somehow.
Case in point: His SNL appearance from this era was a mess. it didn't help that they had him play Good Vibrations SOLO, in a sandbox, plus a cheesy new song. But man does he look awkward. It was the episode hosted by a teenage Jodie Foster.
Also there's that famous radio interview from around this time where you can hear him do a huge line of coke while they're coming back from a break, he gets all amped up and says "WHOA! Far OUT!" And the DJ kinda transistors awkwardly back into the interview..it's crazy
If a punk band had done this song about 10 times faster with droning guitars, it would have been called a masterpiece.. Love this kind of Brian quirkiness.........Brian wondered why there wasn't a song about Johnny, so he just wrote one himself.
No one ever called a punk song a masterpiece
@subg88 are you high?
Actually a really creative, interesting song. Lyrics...well they're original.
