I interpret it like that :
The girl he‘s singing about is basically all he ever wantet (‚you are everything, my most demanding dream‘) and he knows that she wants him (‚hopeful smile‘, ‚eyes so pleased‘) but still, he isn’t in love with her.
And he can‘t really understand why he doesn‘t love her and blames himselft for it (‚I want a fatal disease‘).
So this song is about him being desperate because he realised he doesn‘ t want to be with this girl even though she‘s everything.
Just my point of view ;)

I was at Rock Am Ring, a big festival in Germany in 2017 and Basement played there, so i totally wanted to see them. The show was awesome, great energy, people were singing along and i just had a lot of fun. This is one of my favorite songs in general, like of all time and they played it last. At like 16 seconds into the song, it was overshadowed by an emergency broadcast: a terroristic warning. so they had to interrupt the song and everyone had to leave. It wasn't a mass panic, everyone was calm, there was like a mass choir and the mood didnt flip, but it still sucked and i was in a little bit of fear. It also turned out to be a missunderstanding, there wasn't a teroristic threat, someone just didnt spell his name right, so they thought he faked his ID and he was a terrorist. I always think of that moment when i hear this song now, in the crowd with people like me, full of sweat and energy, just fully alive at a place where i am supposted to feel safe. I swear to god, one day i will hear this song live...fully. Because fuck racism and fuck terrorism, music is way stronger than that shit.
