I remember being enchanted with The Fantasticks when it was new – right after graduated from high school, I just listened to the original cast recoring o refresh my memory. and all i can say is THIS version by Streisand REALLY S_U_C_K_S, It's coarse, strident, vular and completely violates the gentle, innocnt sweetness spirit of the Schmidt and Jines original. I respect Barbra's talent, but THIS is just ATROCIOUS. Sorry! I don't buy it.

How is it possible that whenever I listen to Barbra it's like I'm hearing her for the first time? She approaches every song with such originality and freshness. Amazing.

This vocal is a masterpiece.
She should have recorded this in her 30's. It is too histrionic and requires the refinement she brought to her later interpretations. Her voice, however, is in its youthful bloom.
This is the only version of the song I really like! Just was watching the Fantasticks movie and now see how much drama and urgency, not to mention incredible vocals, she adds to the song.
She does go on a bit, but she hits the notes right in the middle and conveys the message...
I love Babs dearly, especially her early stuff, but really - she has just ruined this song for me... which is a song I always loved.
I think that this recording illustrates Barbra as an actress who sings. She put a lot of drama into this and other early recordings. Is this what you find objectionable?

If before rain or storm i would hear Barbra singing this i might want rain everyday. It's perfect. Though it's little too far musically from the score, more syncopated and less dramatic. But the singing is so good i couldnt care less

I think that one thing that sets her apart from other singers is the acting that she puts into her singing. She certainly does it in this song. It's as if she is performing it on Broadway.
I think this version gave a new life .. a broader perspective to this song...
She aint a beauty - but she is beautiful .
